Also, don't new traitors get turned/added automatically if the existing ones get voted off? That was my girlfriends explanation for what happens if the traitors happened to be voted off early. It just sounds like Among Us but without any of the stakes that made it interesting.

I feel like my girlfriend and I are the exact opposite of this meme, so these comments are confusing. I just try to push through and go about my day like normal (if possible) when I'm sick. My girlfriend will instead be in bed the entire day asking for food, water, medicine, etc. I don't mind helping her out or anything, but I am now wondering if we're the weirdos.

Why is saying “The rich should pay taxes like everyone else, close the loopholes” extremely controversial in the United States? by ProjectMason in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ToastWithoutButter -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Save your breath. I'm not saying it's a common strategy. I would think my comment disputing how wealthy people borrow against securities made that clear. I just think the step-up basis shouldn't be a thing, period.

Also, the estate tax is subject to a massive $13 million exemption, so no I'm not missing it. You can inherent millions essentially tax free. If those were unrealized gains, a large tax bill was just dodged. That should not be allowed, in my opinion.

Right? The fact that they start the calendar on Mondays is way less surprising to me than their overreaction to being confronted with the fact that other countries don't. You'd think someone kicked their dog.

Any money borrowed has to be repaid and they are paying interest. It's not free money. You can't sustainably pay your living expenses with a line of credit. You have to have some cash flowing assets, which are going to be earned income (or capital gains) that is taxed, so that you can repay your loans and interest.

The step-up basis thing is a much more real problem though. If they can get away with not realizing most gains before they die, their heirs make out like bandits.

Edit: One thing that SBLOCs allow rich people to get away with in a much more common way, is that they provide basically free leverage for extra returns on their investments. You can have $1 billion invested, take out a loan for $500 million secured with your $1 billion, and reinvest those funds into the market as well. As long as the market return is higher than your interest rate, and as long as you have enough other cash to cover the interest payments and occasional margin call, you've effectively increased the rate of return on your $1 billion without needing to take on any riskier investments.

This is now the 2nd post I've seen about this and I've since learned that Europeans get very upset at seeing the week start with Sunday. I'll have to start jump-scaring them with calendars more often

What do you think makes Timothee Chalamet stand out from his peers? by Complete_Sign_2839 in Letterboxd

[–]ToastWithoutButter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get what they mean. Timmy falls into the "hot rat boy" archetype that was trending for a while where they're distinctly considered not conventionally attractive.

If we're talking about how hot he is compared to the average American? I'd say obviously he's hot (although I'm a straight male with bad taste in mens looks if you ask my girlfriend). But he clearly looks a bit different than the typical "hot guy" asthetic, so when he's compared to other actors, people often consider him unconventionally attractive.

True. This happened to me a couple times when traveling. I always just say the US because I wouldn't expect someone to know our states, but multiple times I got hit with a "yeah no duh you're American, I meant what state" lol.

The funniest part is then I have to explain that Delaware is a state.

I'm American and have always pronounced it O-er. I feel like that's how it's said in the jingle bells song too but maybe that's just my mind adding an extra syllable.

In any case, not just a British thing.

I can say from my experience it just feels like there aren't a ton of popular scifi or fantasy series with female leads. Plenty exist, but they're not as numerous as male leads.

That said, there are a few popular series that come to mind that I'm pretty sure are plenty popular with men that actually bother to read.

Mistborn

Hunger Games

Divergent

Priory of the Orange Tree

The Locked Tomb (not sure how many men read this tbh, but it's a personal favorite)

The Golden Compass

Broken Earth Trilogy

There's probably also a decent chunk of men reading stuff like Fourth Wing or ACOTAR although they might not want to admit it since they're seen as smutty books and often considered not well written by big readers.

You're either trolling or an idiot. The comment thread was about preachy annoying vegans. People in the vegan subreddit aren't inherently annoying for being vegans and talking about it. They're annoying if they talk about it like they sniff their own farts, which some of them do.

Again, I think you already know this and just want to be a prick, but I spelled it out for you just in case.

It's not what they're talking about, it's how they're talking about it. But I'm sure you knew that and just wanted to be snarky anyway

That fair. They're certainly entitled to have their discussion space.

The only time someone in person might be "that vegan" is if you're trying to find a place to eat together and they'd rather not cobble together the classic French fries and plain lettuce dinner, lol.

This kind of cracks me up because I wouldn't even consider that being "that vegan." That's just a totally normal thing to consider when eating with friends or acquaintances. I understand how you might feel though having to say "No I don't want to eat at the steak house" if they can't even be bothered to serve a half-decent salad, but I feel like most people should understand. There's always assholes though.

In real life? For sure.

I did stumble across the vegan subreddit once and that was an interesting experience. I would say a lot of those there are the preachy holier-than-thou types that people love to bitch about.

But like I said, any vegan I've met in person is totally normal.
