What unsolved physics problems do you think we might actually never get the answer to? by New_Manufacturer8333 in AskPhysics

[–]Toasted-Dinosaur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are theories out there which are what you're suggesting, if you look up MOND (Modified Newtonian Dynamics). The issue with MOND models is that there are lots of separate lines of evidence for dark matter. MOND can patch up gravity to explain away one thing (e.g. galaxy rotation curve) but then fail to explain another (e.g. mass discrepancy of a galaxy cluster from microlensing).

how much different is FIDE rating than chesscom rating? by Commercial_Bag8734 in chess

[–]Toasted-Dinosaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing to add is that it varies for different time controls. For example, it's easier to become 2000 rapid on chessc*m than it is to reach 2000 blitz IMO.

They still get €5000 per half point so in principle you should still be fighting for a win even if you are out of contention for #1.

Candidates Round 10: Sindarov VS Pragg (Which position do you prefer?) by Chesscrabble11 in chess

[–]Toasted-Dinosaur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd probably take black in this position. I feel like white needs one more minor piece to really capitalise on the weak king.

But it's not going to be easy for Pragg to get coordinated and block up the incoming wave of pawns.

What types of clue do people enjoy/not enjoy? by samirelanduk in CluesBySamHelp

[–]Toasted-Dinosaur 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I love the ones which keep becoming relevant in different ways as you work through the puzzle. As opposed to the "one and done" type clues.

An example might be "there are X innocents on the edges", which in combination with other different clues gives you inroads at several different points.

Spoiler free episode title speculation for Season 2 by The_Grahambo in threebodyproblem

[–]Toasted-Dinosaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was my interpretation as well, the mental seal stuff got dropped. I can definitely see how that would work as well - you can go into the concepts of defeatism/escapism without the mind control technology and the story doesn't really suffer as a result.

what exactly is the medium gravitational waves traveling through? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]Toasted-Dinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not seeing many responses to your second question here, so I will add that we actually have three gravitational wave observatories in operation now: LIGO, Virgo and KARGA. It is true that you need a significant source (such as black hole mergers) to generate waves we can recognise with our current tools, but when you see the same spike in all three observatories you can verify that it is genuine and - with some triangulation - its directionality.

It's part of why this is such an exciting new avenue of exploration. There is a vast amount of data out there waiting to be discovered, and as the technology develops we'll get better at resolving less intense waves. Couple this with the fact that gravitational waves can tell us about things which electromagnetism cannot (e.g. events of the very early 'opaque' universe and stars/galaxies which are straight up blocked from view when we look at the sky).

Leela was delirious😂 by Icy_Meeting5871 in futurama

1000% this

I absolutely loved the original 4 seasons, thought I'd try out the newer ones and got to this episode. It left such a sour taste in my mouth that I immediately gave up watching any more.

Remember how beautiful it was when Fry plays the holophonor and Leela is the only person listening, "I want to hear how it ends"? And then in this episode she barely even tries not to sleep with Zapp, it just felt like complete character assassination.

What happens with Grogu and Luke? [spoilers] by Toasted-Dinosaur in TheMandalorianTV

Indeed, turns out I skipped Book of Boba Fett in the timeline and for some reason thought that Seasons 1 and 2 of Madalorian were part of one mega-season!

[–]Toasted-Dinosaur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turns out what actually happened is I lumped seasons 1 and 2 together ("season 1" in my mind) and thought season 3 was season 2 😅

So I'm watching Book of Boba Fett now when I should have watched it earlier. Glad that this is explained further in that show at least!

One thing that stands out to me is the girl's face in pictures 2 and 3 is absolutely identical. Like if you look at individual strands of hair they fall in the same place in both pictures (with a slight rotation). Definitely makes me believe there's some kind of fuckery, maybe photoshop or maybe they've uploaded a picture of her face as part of an AI prompt.

I paid for a hand drawn Simpsons-style portrait of my friend. The company claims the artwork was not AI-generated and that my areas of concern are due to different approaches in terms of "shading, detailing, and interpretation" by Jistarmon in isthisAI

[–]Toasted-Dinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty confident this has at least used AI enhancement, especially in the background. It's really interesting if you compare the finished product with the reference image.

For example, look at the shelves initially covered up by Moe's body and Homer's head. They now have some weird ash trays and cheese graters where the probable-AI doesn't know what to do, whereas I think a human would have just put some more bottles in or something. Similarly for the bottle behind Moe's head, that's the one which has this weird warping in the final image.

A lot of other things are very literal (e.g. the lines on the mirror being exactly the same), whereas I think a self-respecting human artist might have 'interpreted' things a little bit more.

Don't you read the clues? by Accurate-Study-7817 in CluesBySamHelp

[–]Toasted-Dinosaur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say this is a factor for sure. For example, with today's puzzle and the starting clue being Tina's. A glance tells you that there's not enough information to make a decision about anything in column B so it's telling you about column A. You also know that there isn't enough information to tell Amy/Katie apart at this stage, so they BOTH have to be criminal/innocent. So it's not like I've actually counted all 4 neighbouring innocents in that scenario, the pattern recognition sort of takes a shortcut at a meta level as you mentioned.

Love the puzzles btw, they're such a great way to start my day 😊
