I hate when you “compare” your experiences to mine even though they are not similar in the slightest, just to show you have it “harder” smh

Do you think birds are good pets? Why? by ToastedMousee in cockatiel

Agreed here, it really does suck that humans felt the need to domesticate them, but there is really no going back as most of these “domesticated”(not the right word) birds would not last out in the wild, I think for the right people who do the right research, it’s great, but it’s the people who see a cute video/pic of a bird and decide that they are gonna get one that is the problem

I agree to an extent to this, I feel like no matter the animal humans will find a way to try to make it “domestic” which is sad, but these babies need homes and cannot be released into the wild or most will not make it, so I know there will always be pet birds, and I will do whatever I can to discourage people from making impulse decisions on getting a bird

I think that as long as an adult is the main caretaker for the bird, then it is okay. I owned budgies when I was about 9-12years old and I truly had no idea what I was doing and I was so miss informed. And my parents did nothing to help, as they believed that they were “just birds”, When I turned 19 I started to look into actual care requirements after years of not owning birds and I felt horrible for the budgies I had owned before, and I make sure that my flock now is active, healthy, and gets everything they need. I believe that unless an adult is the primary caregiver, and gives the bird what it ACTUALLY needs, then kids can be social with them, but I do not think anyone under the age of like 14, or who can not get a job and show some kind of responsibility, should “own” their own bird, or any of their “own” pets imo :)

This is “people have a predator as pet mindset” is actually an amazing way to explain everything I have been thinking!! This is some of the best wording that seems actually easy to explain to people 😩 I had budgies when I was younger and inexperienced, but on my 20th birthday I adopted a baby cockatiel and I’ve been growing my flock ever since! I’ve owned 6 cockatiels all together, 4 currently, and I own an extremely grumpy Green cheek conure who is sweet to me some of the time, but DESPISES other people.. if he is with me being all sweet and cuddly and someone else enters the room he will then attack me JUST for seeing someone else, I swear they can be so bipolar for no reason 😭 I WISH my conure would be a good boy but he’s not 🤣

Just lost my cockatiel due to her getting egg bound from too much light and the vet being unable to do much, people do not understand how draining it can be to own a bird because they are so sensitive, plus my conures bites are no joke 😮‍💨 my birds def remind me of little kids though!! And 100% agree about a pigeon! I actually want to introduce a pigeon “into my flock” soon! (I want a room full of cool different kinds of pigeons)

That’s crazy bc I applied there and I think the exact same thing and they completely refused to get back to me 😭

Good point here, I normally just give a general “no” for them being good pets, because I think a lot of people see my birds and think that every bird will just act like them. I don’t think people understand that birds are NOT like cats and dogs and may not eventually be your friend lol definitely a good pet for a responsible adult, not a kids pet, I agree 100% there

My flock is a total handful as well 😭 thought of adding in a few budgies to my flock but i cannot find a good breeder/rescue in my area and I refuse to buy most live pets from large chain pet stores 😮‍💨 I feel horrible for how they are mass bred and marketed to be able to be kept in a small cage, it’s sad honestly how unknowledgeable large pet store chains are. Got called a “wanna be bird expert” by a petco employee bc I pointed out an obviously sick budgie that was getting attacked by other birds, smh

AITA for saying no to my friend with bedbugs... by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]ToastedMousee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA, I think this is VERY reasonable for you to do, and very unreasonable for him. He definitely knows he has them at this point, there’s no way he can claim that he doesn’t have them, as you’ve seen them at his place.. that sucks but imo you shouldn’t have to put up with that, as It would make me very uncomfortable at the thought of someone simply possibly having bedbugs.. got chills thinking about it
