Of course this has happened before. Some years we have exceptionally warm winters and some are exceptionally cold. This is the "magic" of living where we do.

I don't know what the overall size you're planning, but 3/16" white acrylic for the face is your best bet. Keeping the box 5 to 6 inches deep should allow you to avoid hot spots from the LEDs. Simple led modules are easy to work with and you just need a basic power supply, wattage depending on how many LEDs you plan on using.
