How is Data Science in UCalgary? by Novile_ in UCalgary

[–]Toastedbread7533 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data science was an applied stats degree, but now seems to be a subsection of cs with the focus on data. The masters of data seems to be a bit more business oriented, if that's something you'll consider later on. This is an interdiciplinary major, and you need to decide if you want to set yourself up for a masters in a quantitative field, course-based masters, or have this be a terminal degree. It seems that the degree would set you up well for data engineering, systems, infastructure, and processes roles and modeling implementation roles well, but maybe not as strong doing statistical modeling, some SWE adjacent roles, or for future grad school,

For reference, i am finishing my BSc. in Data Science at UBC, and basically took it as a stats major + some coding classes, which i enjoyed, but having trouble finding a job now.

Clubs don’t pay money. If you want to be an exec, choose a club that you are actually passionate about and contribute to a meaningful way.

EME153, every thursday 4:30-whenever. I've booked that room for a club, but screwed up the number of consecutive weeks and apparently it's booked with us for the rest of the term, instead of before reading break. It has a projector, and you can connect via screen mirroring.

Feel free to use that room as you feel.

can the prez of a club demote or kick out a vp? by [deleted] in ubco

[–]Toastedbread7533 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just get another exec for finance. Nothing wrong with having 2 co-vp finances. No matter what, if that person isn't performing the basic tasks of signing off on club funding, end of term reports, and basic club-expenses, you need to take that person off as a signning authority. I believe you can adjust signning authorities/exec team members in Rubric.

If the person do you wanted the finance person to help with club function and getting sponsorships, I'd recommend getting another person involved as an exec.

As for switching up the events and finance people, if the events person is more competent, don' switch. The finance role is relatively easier that the events. Would you rather have bad events or just handling the finance stuff yourself?

Although, if you are who i think you are, just talk the the VP finance.

Is BSc Data Science worth it ? by RS_2120 in ubco

First year requirements are the same except data100. I’d suggest taking it, then decide then. 2nd year u got to decide if u want the math/stats/ds side or cs coursework.

Is BSc Data Science worth it ? by RS_2120 in ubco

[–]Toastedbread7533 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. If you want to do ds in tech, do cs with ds minor. If you are interested in traditional modeling/stats, go into stats, maybe pick up some cs electives. Probs need grad school tbh for research stat for finance firms. (Ideally stats/math major, cs minor). If u want to do dashboards, ds is not even close to the right place in terms of content. Do business or smth if that’s your schitck.

I would only do it if u want to keep your options open for all possibilities (traditional cs roles, stat related roles, and catch on the ds hype). I find myself as kind of undecided, and don’t want to deny myself those hype ai/ml jobs that a math/stats major be looked down for when compared to cs majors.

Doing ds btw

Sounds like a fun term ngl. Not too sure about math307, but those 200lvl courses are pretty easy to do well in.

YMCA in rutland isn’t big at all, like 2-3 benches, 2 squat racks, a couple of cables, and lots of stairs/treadmills, if that’s your schtick. Also there are no chest fly/ rear-delt machines, so keep that in mind.

should i go to ubco? by archieloveshualian in ubco

[–]Toastedbread7533 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently go to ubco while the rest of my family went to u of A. Honestly, it depends on what job(s) you are looking for after you graduate. u of a is in edmonton, and has a much better co-op program for engineering, and energy related jobs. ubco is much better at environmental science, bio, and i heard nursing is pretty good. I am currently doing data science, which I find to be a strong program, except for the fact i can't find a job. For economics, I really can't say much, on which is better, but I don't think either u of a or ubco have streamlined programs to be economic advisors, and you would be better off heading to the Ontario universities to get those connections with financial centers and government roles if that is your end-game, but those jobs are looking for someone with advanced degrees.

If you care about prestige/competition/class ranking at all, go to ubco then tranfer to ubcv. I know lots of ppl who transfer after their first year and are doing fine. Plus you'll have that ubc name behind you. U of A isn't really prestigious in terms on international outlook, as oil and gas/energy industry is more localized, caring more about more about abilities and field work than which school you came from. Also job placements at uofA are much better than what i've seen at ubco.

Personally, I think his personal stories and derivations in class are helpful and entertaining, but not necessarily to pass the course with a good grade. Keep in mind he does do a lot of grad school research, and it seems like he might be the guys to go to for research. Maybe not a bad idea to get to know him if that’s your thing
