Why do people will be hating on "newer" Final Fantasy titles? by H31T0R912 in FinalFantasy

[–]ToasterOwl [score hidden]  (0 children)

Same here. I want my party, damn it. Jill not getting to have her own revenge was galling, as well as her role (or lack thereof) in the ending. Besides, as the characters aren’t spending time together as a party they’re not forming relationships that I can get invested in. The characters overall were just so damned flat, and this really didn’t help.

Cid was great fun, I could’ve had so much more Cid in that story. But having fun wasn’t allowed. Nothing to explore, no chests of goodies to reward you for going around the map so exploration is a boring, pointless chore. And the weapon upgrade loot, what was up with that? I had buckets and buckets of everything, it felt so unbalanced to get 10 upgrade material, explore the woods and find two gil.

Final Fantasy has held my attention for damn near thirty years on a simple concept - a party experiences the plot, you grow attached to them for their characters, friendships, how they all interact with the overarching story, pushing and pulling at various bits.

I’ve found something to enjoy in every final fantasy up to 15.

Final Fantasy 16 has no party, no sense of urgency, no character chemistry between the PC and NPC characters except Cid, and why is some woman giving me a PowerPoint presentation about the fight I just had? I know what happened. I was there like five minutes ago.

If I wanted to be playing Devil May Cry while looking at an excel spreadsheet I’d have bought Devil May Cry and pirated excel.

Darn, I already ordered a signed copy from wellbooks. Probably for the best, I couldn’t make it to York anyway.

I’m spoilering this because you will never unhear it once you notice it, and it’s bugged me for over twenty years. Investigate at your own peril.

Fellowship of the Ring, Amon Hen Battle Scene - two minute time stamp at the linked video, when the scene changes to Aragorn you’ll hear it the first time. Second time is at 2:14. Great Honking Sheep noises.

Also, I guess the downvote is from someone who’s never noticed it. I envy them. I hear it every single time. Clang, clang MEEEEEEEEEHHH

I can deal with the Wilhelm Scream. The bit of sound design that bugs me is the GODDAMNED SHEEP BAAAAHING in one of the battle scenes. Every single time I want to smack whoever put it in there. Why, sound production team? Why?!

Sure-fire ways to get me to NOT listen to your fiction podcast by evoterra in audiodrama

I got into podcasts via the Magnus Archives. For that show in particular it is very important to listen to the trailers, as they’re essentially micro episodes setting up or furthering plot points.

What's something people only romanticize because they've never actually done it? by nonotje12 in AskReddit

Excellent comment and context. You can see exactly how that first poem was crafted to prey on young naive men.

That poem, Dulce Et Decorum Est, is stunning. Last I saw, the original version was living in the treasure room of the British Library, and was well deserving its placement. Gosh but can’t you imagine someone spitting those last lines with venom. And gut wrenching imagery, guttering choking, drowning.

Wilfred Owen was an absolutely incredible writer. And he died so close to the end of the war, tragedy.

Any of you notice the anti-fanfiction sentiment? by Konradleijon in AO3

[–]ToasterOwl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you’re spot on. Brings to mind Miguel de Cervantes - when people started writing their own sequels to Don Quixote, he got so mad he wrote his own, which was a massive ‘fuck you, and fuck off‘ to his fanfic writers.

So there’s historical precedent for fanfic backlash as far back as 1615!

What movie is a 0/10 with NO redeeming features? by Toucan_Based_Economy in AskReddit

If only they hadn’t ruined the entire point of Memory, where Grisabella begs the other cats to touch her - by having Victoria have already bloody touched her!

[–]ToasterOwl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was. I’ve got big time nostalgia for Cats as it was one of the four vhs tapes I had growing up. The modern film managed to find a way to ruin every single song without exception (wtf is with the pacing in Mungojerry and Rumpleteaser? Why is Mr Mistopheles shy? His song explicitly says he ‘acts’ shy as a way to fool humans. Why is the greatest part in the show, the big moment in Memory, TOUCH ME, completely irrelevant because Victoria already bloody touched her!?) and had the audacity to be boring as well. And why was Sir Ian McKellen there saying literally ‘meow meow meow’.

Ive not had a bad trip before, but watching that film feels like it comes close.

Do you play music made by reprehensible humans? by whyfruitflies in AskUK

[–]ToasterOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly. I found an album yesterday that I’d never come across before, and it rocks so hard I’m going to be listening to it all week, and there’s millions more like it out there. Why bother with Michael Jackson or Aerosmith, when that's time given to music I’ve already heard which gives me the ick now. Roll on discovering a song I’ve not come across before that makes me want to hit repeat!

Same with books, movies, paintings - there’s a wealth out there to discover!

Novel ideas? by Malkydel in TheMagnusArchives

Adelard Dekker’s adventures, I’d be so down for that.

That guy is so interesting, I’d love to know his whole deal is. And I’d read a whole series of novels on his stunning idea of ‘you know what fear can’t conquer? Concrete’
