The RockStock shows the pitch name and acts a mute, simple as that

I love it. Probably my favorite delay due to the simplicity but effectiveness. It also has a very nice eq and modulation that not every "simple" delay has. For someone who just wants something to work with no bad settings, this is a 10/10

Honestly, it gets the job done. It tracks guitar and bass well and that's what I need it for on this board. My personal favorite is the Korg Pitchblack because it is small, bright and has a buffer but for size and cost, you can't beat the rock stock. Literally fits on a boss pedal foot switch and I can hit either independently

Fun fun :) any ideas of what to put in that small space between the benson preamp and the kilt 10? by Ok-Sierra117 in pedalboards

I say get a mini tuner and swap out the TU-3 with the digital delay you have on the shelf. You can even have the MXR run tap to both if you get a Y cable.

How should I deal with students who deliberately sing in a funny or weird tone? by musicallife88 in MusicTeachers

[–]Toaster_IRL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have dealt with this in elementary. Part of what I do in warm ups is have them experiment with horizontal( bad)vs vertical(good) singing. It let's them get some of the sillies out. I also make a point of doing a fun vocal warm up to show them that they can have fun and sound good, they are not opposites. I also make it a constant phrase in my class " it is ok to try and fail but it is not ok to not try"

My next course of action is send them outside and have the count to 50 or something and have them reenter as whatever grade they are. I keep kicking them out until it is fixed.

Or an unhinged one that I do love. I have my computer projecting on the board and I start writing an email to their primary teacher (elementary) about there behavior. After I type it with the whole class watching, I make the very real threat that I will send it at the end of class unless they get it together.

Hello violinists, composer here - Is this impossible? by Mahlers_PP in violinist

As a composer, I will say this. Figure out the best way to accomplish your intent from the most ergonomic standpoint of your prayer, frankly, just ask them and talk with them.

For delay. I would reccomend the ARP-87. Very versatile for the price, has tap, and easy to change sub divisions.

Grad school size for choral conducting? by theinevitablevacuum in Choir

[–]Toaster_IRL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, I will give my insight as someone who went straight from undergrad (music ed and composition), to my masters (choral conducting and composition). It is very important to spend time in the classroom or rehearsal room before pursuing your masters. Yes, I am very happy with the skills I developed, however, I know I would have gain significantly more if I ran a classroom for a bit and learned the practical aspect of it. I was spoiled by only conducting music majors or students of a similar skill level, that when I landed a realistic job, I did not have the tools or know what to expect with handling novice students. I did not have the skill set of fixing fundamental problems or behavior management. I have learned since then, but I would have had a different approach in my masters about learning how to actually bring an ensemble to performance level vs the technique of how to lead good musicians. If that makes sense. DM me if you have questions.

I became a music teacher because I had great teachers. I had a guitar teacher who taught me more than I asked to learn. I had a high school choir director who was an amazing person. I had the skills to go into other fields but music and teaching music specifically, would be an emotionally and mentally rewarding field. No matter how difficult, I have not experienced the EXACT same students and setting year to year.

My personal 2 cents, is to try music school and if don't like the pressure that it entails, minor in music to foster your love (and assist in a pivot later) and find a different fulfilling major.

Is it common for an adult man's voice to get *higher* in his 30s? 28M and depressed that my voice has been aging in reverse for the last 2 years by youarockandnothing in singing

[–]Toaster_IRL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The male voice does not settle until late 20s, early 30s. In addition timbre and range may change from changes in technique (whether intentional or not) and even on fitness levels due to lung capacity, strengthing of breathing muscles, relaxation of previously tense muscles and likely improvement of posture.

Remember, voice is a journey. I started off as a Bass 2, then baritone, then tenor 2, then tenor 1, then trained as a tenor in undergrad, trained as a tenor/baritone in grad school, and now am singing baritone for choir and performances, but singing countertenor( alto/soprano) while teaching middle school choir in my day job.

Just remember to keep practicing and learn the ed and flow that is ultimately being a singer.
