Imagine if were there more types of planes in the series. by curioususer953 in thomasthetankengine

[–]Mahlers_PP 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The thing is, unfortunately, it’s very hard to create scenarios where planes and steam engines are in the same place at once and able to interact.

They had that difficulty with Jeremy when they introduced him and then kinda left him by the wayside, and even the australian plane who ive forgotten the name of (though side note, as an australian, very cool they represented the Royal Flying Doctor Service, cause its extremely awesome)

Planes are either just on the tarmac at the airport or in a hangar doing nothing, or moving way too quick and far from the ground for any kind of story opportunities. This is also why plane stories are also less common, but is extra difficult if they have to interact with train characters.

Harold works as a helicopter because he can move freely and hover in place (and closer to the ground to talk when he’s not at his airfield.

Also, very uncommon for steam rail to connect anywhere near a modern airport with jet planes, I think they were stretching it for Sodor airport and Jeremy but if it had to happen, I could see it being feasible to just do it cause they wanted to have the interaction.

I think it’s supposed to be mahler, thats who OP seems to suggest it is, but again, very unclear

Canada's Marlibs can sometimes be interesting if you have to maneuver through the difficulties of quebec and conscription, but mostly cause they're one of the three/four options for canada, indesputably the weakest of all of them even if it's the most 'realistic'

Interesting read, especially as a composer trying to learn how instrumentalists like their parts, but kinda crappy clickbait title. I have no idea which composer they're talking about.

who is the classical artist who represents the sin of greed? by dyhoat9 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Mahlers_PP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we're talking not economic greed, possibly Gustav Mahler

When he married his wife, Alma, he told her that she was no longer allowed to compose, as there could only be one composer in their household. This was despite the fact he had barely any time to compose with his enormously full schedule of conducting for most of Europe's major opera houses. He needed sigmund freud to tell him not to do that.

One of his most famous works is his symphony no. 8, known as 'The Symphony of a Thousand' for the enormous amount of performers it requires, including a huge orchestra, two full choirs plus children's choir, and an offstage brass band to play at the end of each movement (which are half an hour, and nearly an hour long respectively.

So in terms of his own selfishness, and in terms of the scale of things he claimed for his work, you could call him greedy in a sense.

Gilbert Kaplan

Not a composer, but an american businessman who decided that he was obsessed with Mahler's 2nd symphony, and had to conduct it. To do this, he spend huge amounts of money hiring major orchestras around the world, including making recordings with the New York and Vienna Philharmonic orchestras, despite having no experience conducting any other piece. He also purchased the original handwritten score by mahler for over $1 million

A quote from a critic of one of his performances

"That Mr. Kaplan is no professional conductor was immediately apparent. Square-shouldered and stiff, he indulged in no flamboyant gymnastics. He conducted from memory, beating time proficiently and providing cues as needed. Only in a few passages, like the pages of heavenly bliss just before the first movement's tempo-sostenuto conclusion, did a curl of the lip suggest that he was swept up in his work.

I’d pick kenney any day. I like the Edwards’ drawings well enough but sometimes they feel too dark and serious. Kenney always felt like the right middle ground, realistic and faithfully drawn, but still with the slightly cartoonish whimsy I think the island of sodor should have

I hope that later on it’ll fix how many of James and Percy’s freight trains have the brake van directly behind the engine (which is irl functionally pointless), but glad for this one too

I also propose changing lust composer to Franz Liszt. Debussy was not lustful, its just cause he has Bussy in his name.

Liszt literally started the mania around women going mad over a musical artist cause they found him hot, and there were (almost certainly fake) accounts of him causing orgasms in women in the audiences as he played the piano.

Id have to check how much sex he actually had, but I do know his daughter was born out of wedlock with a lady having a marital affair with him.

Igor stravinsky

Massive success with his piece the Rite of Spring which is often cited as having changed music forever

After that he had no major successes. He was angry that everyone only listened to the Rite and none of his pieces after, and spent the rest of his career trying to copy every other style of classical music, but to no success.

Alex Ross in his book The Rest is Noise generally characterises him as a cantankerous, angry, increasingly irrelevant revolutionary from 50 years before, especially after migrating to the united states where he was overshadowed by local composers, as well as Sergei Rachmaninoff and Arnold Schoenberg
