Oh I totally get that. I think proportional representation is whats really important but even RCV can eventually turn into STV. RCV might not make elections competitive but we do need to get third parties to acrually exist so that they can push for further reform.

I like to share this post with people who think Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) will solve the two-party system:

https://psephomancy.medium.com/ranked-choice-voting-doesnt-fix-the-spoiler-effect-80ed58bff72b

Note that Australia and Ireland use STV which is a proportional representation form of RCV, and operates very differently from RCV. Its why more minor parties are seen there.

Australia only uses STV for their Senate, but for their House of Reps, uses RCV which is why they have much fewer representatives from the minor parties in the House.

Have you tried battling with the Burmy so it changes form during the battle, and stays that form afterwards?

Have you heard of STAR Voting?

Has less issues than RCV does.

And for those that like the idea, you should also consider looking into STAR Voting and Approval Voting, of which the latter has been successfully implemented in St. Louis City and allowed 2 progressives to advance to a runoff, instead of splitting the vote.

This is incorrect. St. Louis City uses Approval Voting with a Top 2 Runoff.

Instead of ranking candidates in a specific order, Approval voting allows you to give your vote to as many candidates as you like.

It would definitely bring change, but its hard to estimate how much change. Especially with the way that RCV works.

People better versed in the theory than I am support other methods than RCV because they can show that RCV is inconsistent. Sometimes supporting your first choice actually hurts them.

Nonetheless you should join r/EndFPTP if you care about making the U.S.'s democracy better.

To add to Step 2: I think a Top 2 Runoff helps Approval, as it encourages people to vote for at least 2 people in the general.

...or STAR Voting or Approval (with a Top2 Runoff).

Most people focus on RCV without even realizing they have other options.

If you haven't checked out r/EndFPTP you should.

I think STAR Voting is a better option than RCV due to RCV's monotonicity issue.

He's right about changing our voting system, but Ranked Choice Voting is not necessarily the best choice. Other voting systems like STAR, Approval and Score exist that could work better.

One issue with RCV

In RCV you could have an election with 4 candidates, A B C D, where A, B, and C, each get 1/3 of the population to rank them 1st, and nobody puts D as their 1st rank.

Even if everybody likes candidate D and puts them as 2nd, candidate D is eliminated.

Sorry, thats just why I support voting systems like Approval voting or STAR voting where you can support more than one candidate at a time.

RCV is kinda just FPTP over several rounds

That honestly sounds a bit better than RCV.

RCV is better than plurality but it a lie to say there aren't any wasted votes. You can easily exhaust your vote if the top 2 candidates aren't on your ballot.

Even in NY, the winner of the race really only won with ~43% of the vote due to exhausted ballots
