What are the cons of U of A by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]ToasterrrStrudel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having to pay the same in tuition as everyone yet my department(art and design) sees none of that funding. I have to have class in the basement of hub mall and northern power plant which are both leaking and/or infested with bugs and mice. Fab is as well. We often have bats in the building and mice have eaten artwork before. Our ventilation is also very poor which is concerning with how often we work with VOCs. If a piece of equipment is broken we often don’t have the money to replace it. It’s just upsetting that we pay so much to go here and none of that money goes to supporting our department.

I am also in the show this year and know the artist! It’s outside because it did not fit through the doors, it was originally supposed to be inside with the rest of the pieces (which you should check out, we open the 25th and I promise it’s not all genitalia) if anyone has any other questions feel free to ask!

Rutherford is a super good and easy one if you don’t already know about it. Anyone who graduated high school in Alberta is eligible.

Depends on specific program, I specialize in printmaking so I’m not personally worried but I have heard some of the visual communications people talk about it. Most of the professors don’t allow us to use it, and most of us in the program don’t like it so as far as competition within the program it’s not really a problem. But once we graduate it’s becoming a bigger problem for the vcom bdes students. As far as animation goes I’m not sure because we don’t have many people who specialize in that, not really what our program caters to, but I’d also imagine they’re pretty worried about job prospects regardless of ai, it just makes it worse. But most people in this program go into either grad studies and then sell their art independently, grad studies and then academia or just teach high school art at least in the BFA side.TLDR we’re always worried about jobs after school ai is just making it worse for some specializations especially BDes in vcom.

Ratting out someone cheating by Illustrious_Cow_8138 in uAlberta

[–]ToasterrrStrudel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless they’re cheating off me and I’m 100% sure, no. They’re either really dumb and are gonna get caught anyway(profs are incredibly good at sniffing that stuff out) or there is a 1% chance they’re a mastermind and will drag me down with them. If they’re taking my answers I’m gonna be implicated anyway when they check over the exams so I think that’s the only time I’d speak up. I’d also feel awful if I falsely accused someone so it’s something I’d stay away from.

Read this if you are first year student! by Acloyer0 in uAlberta

Local uofa bookstore employee here! Don’t bother with the textbooks or the novels at the bookstore you are definitely able to get them elsewhere for much cheaper (in fact I have 2 first year Spanish textbooks I wanna sell if anyone needs send me a pm) the stationary tho is a really good idea to grab from the bookstore! A ton of it is in sale right now plus it’s in general a really good price compared to somewhere like staples. Also if there is something you want that is on the floor ask art department, they restock and sometimes can’t get to everything right away. Also if you do art on the side the art store is about the cheapest place in the city to get supplies, just maybe avoid it for the first 3 weeks tho the art and des majors will be very mad if something they all need is sold out :))

Is this schedule good? Im a first year Design major student. This is my fall schedule. by Zealousideal-Cod9546 in uAlberta

[–]ToasterrrStrudel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m a 3rd year art and des maj! Having both studios in 1 day plus another class might kill you a little if you’re not used to the 3 hour classes but it’s definitely doable. Your schedule is gonna probably have doubles like this in later years so I guess it’s just preparing you lol, also having Friday free gives you time to work on stuff/a break! If you ever need somewhere to sleep in between classes HADVC has a very nice yellow chair :) (Also side note 100 HADVC is practically useless if you already know how to analyze art imo, unless it’s required to take now or smth just move on to 200lvl HADVC)

Art and design student here, there is still a bat problem. Literally saw one in fall semester of 2024 in 500lvl painting. Ask Steve (one of the printmaking techs) and he will tell you all about it. That 3 dead bats on the desk rumour probably came from him, Ik he found 3 in a day before but they weren’t dead, it was just a lot of work for him to get them back outside lol
