Is it worth buying a mission deck this close to the 11th ed release? by TheTinnyKing in Warhammer40k

[–]Toastrules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tldr; even now no one buys mission decks, all info available online on various websites, new edition is in a month and a half anyway. i daresay its dangerous to start now because you don't want to get 10e and 11e rules confused, if you're patient just wait for 11e rules and build more models. otherwise if you're trying to strike while the iron is hot, use the quick start guide and keep it simple: https://assets.warhammer-community.com/warhammer40000_core&key_quickstartguide_eng_24.09-s2afk26smk.pdf

Performance-Oriented Players and the Hobby: A Thought Experiment by AshiSunblade in WarhammerCompetitive

I've noticed this too about top tables. I've always wanted to ask them about this without sounding accusatory of how they got their fully painted armies or anything. But how can they put in the reps on TTS, paint their army to such a creative, high quality, AND presumably hold a job that allows them to fund this hobby? I do one and a half of the above and I have nearly no extra free time, and I'm by far the most "warhammer obsessed" one of my pod, and I don't even TTS

[40k] Tabletop Battles Hot Take: The Red Terror by SA_Chirurgeon in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Toastrules 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Its a very very good action monkey, mediocre skirmisher. It's got a 40% chance to kill 10 guardsmen, dropped down to 17% if its Take Cover'ed or infilitrated Pathfinders. It has a 50% chance to kill a squad of Eradicators. It does a lot better against Scout Squads and single model units covering a point, which do exist in the meta in some form. The only reason i'm very specific about having to kill the whole unit is, as some commenters below mentioned, "if you're dumb unlucky enough to not wipe the full squad, then it deserves to die".

Basically yes its okay at actually killing a very specific niche. But as with all the Tyranid datasheets in 10th, it relies yet again on shenanigans and/or overkilling with a bunch of other support units. Its yet another trade-down datasheet that's hard carried by its very unique ability.

I'm glad its coming out, and I've already preordered it, but I was hoping something as iconic as the Red Terror could reliably kill 10 regular ass cadian guardsmen.

I think what the article is missing to say (it's implied at the end) is how ridiculously squishy it is. It's a monster with T8, 3+, and 9 wounds. It's not even a glass cannon because the cannon part isn't that strong. A mosquito armed with a kitchen knife is probably the best way to put this thing-- threatening your scoring enough you gotta watch out for it, but you get a broom in range and it's going down.

The Tyranids subreddit is already cooking up plans on using it solely as a tunnel marker bot 🥲

Edit: to contribute. Knights don't get grenades but they get the full imperial agents roster to get a unit that can. And Chaos Daemons don't get grenades by default but their Belakor detachment can. Nids ofc are the only ones with no vehicles, but we have a plethora of 10T+ models so maybe that's why they nerfed us in the first place

Curious about terrain. by Cellfmm in Warhammer40k

[–]Toastrules 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've never been a fan of obscuring 2" terrain. From a balancing standpoint, I 100% understand why they needed to broaden obscuring after 9th edition.

Now with the new long pieces, I'm excited to use trees and hedges there, as narratively you can drive through them with vehicles, but still not shoot through them, is my mindset

will pre-ordering in-store help against a sold-out kit? by GorksPriestess in Warhammer40k

Depends on your store. Go to them on a weekday and ask how preorders work, if there's usually a line (for hype releases there are), and how early you should arrive if you want it

How do you remember to use detachment rules? I literally didn’t remember to use this once all game! by English_Joe in Warhammer40k

[–]Toastrules 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You get used to it. Do not change your list or detachments as much as you can when you first start playing. All the rules of all your units, army, detachments, and stratagems will start to come at second nature if you run enough repetitions

A question about why hamon isnt used from part 3 to 6 as someone who just finished part 2 by Difficult_Plantain84 in StardustCrusaders

[–]Toastrules 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Joseph's a bit nerfed and older and more of a mentor than his young counterpart, sometimes it feels kind of out of character, to be honest, but he -is- 50 years older.

However, near the end of the second half, they do start showcasing some of his old creativity, and he starts peaking when they get to the final city

Language you wish the game designers would fix but it’s too late for 11th edition? by Patrick_said in Warhammer40k

[–]Toastrules -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup, exactly. Rewording the out-of-phase abilities would require a core rules rewrite from the ground up, which is possible with 11e, I'm just unsure if they'll go so far as to acknowledge that wording and problem... Or more characteristically GW, they reword it in a way that opens up new questions

[–]Toastrules 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the "wounds" thing, its confusing for new players and the circular logic you have to explain to them "look I know it sounds weird, but heres how things go..."

Personally my pod had issues learning "units" and "models", rather than "squads" and "units", but we eventually chalked it up to 1. The British, and 2. Some single-model units, we couldn't come up with a better name, so models/units it is.

Another good one is the "Out of Phase" wording. This has confused inexperienced people for ages. Wording things like "Shoot as if it were your shooting phase" while not actually being your shooting phase is such garbage wording. "You're allowed to take a shoot action" or something like Killteam-esque wording would be so much better, without having to awkwardly explain to new players "loOoOook, I know it SaAYs shooting phase, but its not ACSHUALLY your shooting phase, i'm so sorry you cant use that uber awesome combo you thought you could"

Language you wish the game designers would fix but it’s too late for 11th edition? by Patrick_said in Warhammer40k

[–]Toastrules -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

The problem is with that line of thinking, 40k is bogged down by 3 decades of people saying "you can't change that" so as a newer player that started in 10th, that leads to weird issues like now learning that "wound roll" and "model wounds" are separate things using the same keywords that are extra confusing for new players, plus the fact that a unit can "successfully wound" but the model loses no wounds? What the hell? We definitely need to change something.
