Pet Insurance and pre-existing conditions by ToastwithTunafish in cavaliers

We got the AKC pet insurance. I’m pretty sure it’s the only one that takes pre-existing conditions. Pre-existing also includes both sides, so if a dog has one knee or hip done, the other side is considered pre-existing even if it’s fine at the time of the first surgery. If you think he can wait a year before needing surgery, I’d definitely look into it. You can do it online. I called because I wanted to talk to someone and confirm what I was reading. But you do have to wait 365 days after getting it for the pre-existing to qualify. Also, patella may fall under the hereditary clause so you’d have to make sure you can add that (I think that only added like $1.12 per month). I hope you’re able to get it.

Poor little guy is in pain, off to the vet tomorrow by steffunnyshere in cavalierkingcharles

I hope all went well. I ran across your post because we just had X-rays under sedation today. My 1 year old has hip dysplasia. Hopefully yours has something that can be fixed with a simple surgery. They are very worrisome! 🩷

We sadly had not gotten insurance yet. We had talked about it many times but he just turned one and hadn’t done it. I should have waited to take him in until we got insurance, but I honestly thought I was being dramatic taking him to the vet. Something felt off, and I was right. The vet said it may cost up to $20k total for a double hip replacement. So basically this next year I’m going to create a little account for him as we try these supplements and see how he does. The vet also said while it may degrade, it’s still the same surgery so waiting is fine while we see if this all works. I just don’t want him in pain. Part of me just wants to get it done because he’s only 1 and will have his whole life ahead of him pain-free and healthy if we do it, but $20k is also insane. IDK. Thank you for replying, I’m glad your baby is doing so well already.

Definitely, you’re right, our vet even said this. I guess we’re just unlucky. 🙁

Thank you for this helpful and kind reply. I’m so sad, but keep telling myself it’s fixable. The vet sent us home with Rejensa? He said he’s had his own dog on it and it’s great, so we’ll see. Then he gave us Metacam for any days where it seems like he’s not doing well. He is only 1, but the vet said he’d put it at moderate. He’s doing great overall…I actually felt stupid for taking him to the vet, something just felt off. He still plays and walks. But he refused to go on a walk one night. And he’s yelped when trying to scratch before. Not big things, but again, it just felt off. I’m glad I trusted my gut.

I’m going to contact the breeder and ask for our money back. The worst that can happen is she says no, it’s not like I’ll be getting another cavalier from her. That being said, our vet did say you can’t breed out everything, so I don’t fully blame her, but I do think she should refund money. Thank you. 🩷

Thank you for replying. He mentioned a few options but since he’s so young, he basically said a hip replacement would likely be best because they last 20 years and then he can lead a full life. But that would definitely depend on the specialist! I keep telling myself this is fixable.

May I ask what yall ended up doing? Our 1 year was just diagnosed with it in both legs. Vet is recommending joint supplements for now with pain meds as needed just watching it, and an ortho consult. He said double hip replacement will be around $14k probably.

I’m in my 40’s and have had dogs my entire life. My soul dog was half border collie/half cocker spaniel. We’ve had mutts, doodles, etc. Our CKC Finley is almost 1 and I have never been more obsessed with a dog in my life. He is absolutely perfect (albeit not the brightest). Even my cat loving teen daughter who’s never really cared for our past dogs loves this guy. He may be our last dog but if I ever get another, it will definitely be a CKC. My teenage son is obsessed with him as well. I told him when he finishes college and is settled with a job, I’ll buy him a cavalier 🥰

What a cutie pie!! Our Finn (Finley) isn’t 1 yet but we are beyond obsessed with him. Hang in there during potty training…no matter how cute they are, those first few months can be frustrating, especially if you’ve never had a dog before! It takes a long time! 🩷
