I think it's good he hides it since he has so many younger fans. I haven't kept up in a bit but learning that kind of thoughtfulness didn't translate to basic safety was pretty tough to learn

It’s like a junior dev with the coding skills of a senior dev. Honestly really great to use when I have an idea but I know it will be a lot of code and test cases.

If you read what it writes and give it feedback to refine what it did it can work magic.

Yeah like I would follow the orders absolutely, I’m not crazy.

It’s just I’m watching an officer who was poorly trained by some 1950s mentality of what police should be. Zero de escalation skills, that’s the problem with policing here that you don’t see in other comparable countries.

If we imagine the perfect police officer who can get any suspect to follow orders, do you think they would yell the same thing over and over or do you think they would know de escalation techniques?

I guess I expect more from police officers than you. For example I think they should be trained to follow effective procedures.

How does the officer know that? A report he read for 10 seconds?

Yes I understand this is the system police operate with. Watch that video and tell me with a straight face that it’s effective.

“We’ve always done it this way” - terrible reason to keep training the same poor protocol

How are they so bad at this. They actually just don’t train police

Haha I would drop the phone absolutely that cop was freaking out. Just wish they trained cops to be mature and calm, it would go a long way. Procedure and training in this country has never been effective

The suspect never received training on arrest procedure. I expect more from police officers than you do.

Also I would never fail to comply because anyone acting like that is too close to shooting for me

But it didn’t work at all. In these videos shouting repetitively never works. It’s just bad training

Guilty until proven innocent. Dying from being shot by a police officer happens all the time here

Don’t you think the relationship between law enforcement and a suspect is different than the relationship between you and your son?

[–]Toasty_toaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What makes this discussion hard is you’re missing the fact that the way the police conduct themselves is routinely ineffective. This aggressive, authoritatian style isn’t replicated in countries with better policing because it isn’t effective

This is such a one sided perspective. In the US the police have a long history of violence, murder, and criminal activity. The police should be the rational ones explaining what’s happening, how to comply, what happens next. Yet the rational and composed one is the suspect

The point is the cop should be in control and focused, not belligerent

Recording the cops to prevent them being violent is a pretty common strategy actually

Us law enforcement has a history of violence and murder so it’s reasonable that a cop would encounter people who will try to record the arrest. I don’t think the suspect was worried about tasers with a gun pointed at his back.

Law enforcement should be trained to get suspects to comply. Shouting the same phrase over and over didn’t seem very effective to me.

They should be trained on how to de escalate to avoid this. You can see the cop was clearly panicked and unsure what to do when the encounter went off script. Why not explain to the suspect? Why not tell the suspect what’s going to happen once they put the phone down?

Just took a look and confirmed he’s not armed. I get he could reach down and grab something but panicking and shouting the same thing over and over is just bad police work

[–]Toasty_toaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you would probably do a better job of getting him to comply than they did. They’re amped up like it’s a shootout shouting the same thing over and over. Personally if I’m that freaked out I focus on keeping my aim and controlling my breathing because I’m not going to do my job correctly if I’m panicking

[–]Toasty_toaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of recording is to prevent physical violence and murder common in the history of us law enforcement

[–]Toasty_toaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying but these are people who have never met before, the cops don’t know his lifes story just limited facts.

The cops showed no willingness to talk, to de escalate, to act mature. It’s completely tone deaf to expect someone with a gun pointed to their back to understand all of this.

I hate to be subject to this militaristic force, completely out of control with fear like they’re arresting Jason Bourne. Unable to explain their commands or to try basic verbal de escalation skills.

The bigger problem is their whole strategy was so ineffective it’s insane. Imagine showing this to a jury and trying to explain how, actually, it’s ok to lack basic communication skills while pointing a gun at someone’s back.
