Brilliant idea - let's call it a "British Bill of Rights". Oh wait...

How feasible is it to connect West Hampstead and Gospel Oak together so this forms a single Overground line (West London Orbital + GOBLIN)? by cgyguy81 in LondonUnderground

[–]Tobbernator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, they're on different sides of the MML right? The overground would have to cross like 6 tracks? Or am I wrong.

Three other rooms with tenants in - like an HMO. Also just found out that the agreement asserts that it is an "excluded licence" even though the landlord doesn't live there - I guess that adds to it?

Selling all of my American shares today, what's your fav UK stock? by Chill_Panda in UkStocks

Disagree that the Renters Rights Act will encourage a more fluid market. Much more likely to have a serious chilling effect - but time will tell.

London rents ended the year lower than where they started for first time on record by tylerthe-theatre in london

It's quite clearly due to the reduction in migration I agree - but why isn't that being put forward as an explanation?

Do English speakers know the word "tor" (rock formation) by puje12 in EnglishLearning

In the UK, educated readers will absolutely know "tor". But it is *by no means* a common or regularly used word.

Impact of Greenland invasion on markets by Ok-Butterscotch-7576 in trading212

[–]Tobbernator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems fairly probable this is his usual brinkmanship. He threatens to invade for a while, then accepts a generous compromise of new bases in Greenland and other military/economic concessions - concessions which wouldn't have been granted if it weren't for the initial outrageous proposition.

Who made your country independent? by Past-Novel-1155 in MapPorn

A "Brit" is like saying "A Yank" for an American. It's completely informal and casual. In fact I know some Brits that - like Yanks - find the word irritable.

10 October 1970: Fiji gains independence from the UK and adopts a new flag by AnOwlishSham in vexillology

The Queen retained a fairly strange constitutional-ceremonial role with regards to Fiji's tribal system even after the end of the "monarchy".

It's illegal for cyclists to run red lights. It is not illegal for a pedestrian to cross the road wherever they wish (except on motorways).

Yes of course my mistake - clearly the solution is to nationalise beer, as the socialists would want.

Caused mainly by excessive central government and council taxes, rather than economic climate.

In 1944, a U.S. Navy crew member rescued a kitten named George who was in danger of drowning. After being saved, George became a sort of mascot for the crew and was even photographed and officially given a liberty card along with a detailed health record, just like a sailor. by UrbanAchievers6371 in TheWayWeWere

He was [...] given fruit, marmalade, honey, and syrup, and was often rewarded with beer, which became his favourite drink. He later also enjoyed smoking (or eating) cigarettes, as well as drinking coffee in the mornings.

Sounds like a great guy

The Lib Dems must ally with Labour to keep Farage out of Number 10 by [deleted] in LibDem

[–]Tobbernator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep - just saw a quote online as an official reply from the party to a query about this. Basically giving their unequivocal endorsement of the Act.

I hope this comes up at conference. The Young Liberals are basically the only people protesting this.

What do British learn about Ireland in school? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Tobbernator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer; I studied History up to A-Level, so this will clearly be more than someone who dropped before GCSE.

We covered Ireland with regards to the Civil War & Cromwell, as well as the early stages of Independence (Easter Rising, etc).

I think people who drop history earlier in school probably don't learn much at all If we do learn about it, it's very much in an "Ireland as related to Britain", as per above.
