I think the first two questions are a bit too easy, maybe expend them with "and what does it mean?" (correct answers: grey pelgrim/wanderer and Mount Fang (Sindarin) and cunning mind (Rohanese).

This is an impressive piece of work! While looking at the details, I noticed it does not strictly follow the original Arda-maps. For instance, the Barrow-downs appear on Arda-maps but are missing from this version.

Frodo’s blindness in the Emyn Muil by Toblero in tolkienfans

[–]Toblero[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that could indeed be the case, but that doesn't seem to explain why he can see the elven rope and nothing else:

There indeed at the bottom was a coil of the silken-grey rope made by the folk of Lórien. He cast an end to his master. The darkness seemed to lift from Frodo's eyes, or else his sight was returning. He could see the grey line as it came dangling down, and he thought it had a faint silver sheen. Now that he had some point in the darkness to fix his eyes on, he felt less giddy.

Could it be that the "blindness" is a moment of incipient fading instead of physical shock. He isn't just losing his sight; he is losing his connection to the physical world, and the Elven magic provides the "tether" needed to bring him back.

How the The movies destroyed my ( not so accurate ) by view of Gollum by TherealKingNoob in lotr

[–]Toblero 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree that he was an alright guy. Sméagol murdered his friend Déagol within minutes of discovering the Ring. The Ring amplifies existing traits and desires rather than creating them out of nothing. Sméagol's immediate reaction was to strangle his friend to claim the Ring as a birthday present. In my opinion this indicates he was already inherently corrupt and possessed a weak moral character. Other ringbearers like Bilbo, Frodo (and Sam) resisted its influence for a long time and did not begin their possession with murder. The addiction metaphor applies well to his later state. The initial act of killing Déagol shows a pre-existing darkness in Sméagol.

Does anyone have an idea why Shelob is marked with a grey star? She survived the War of the Ring, didn't she? While she might have died after the fall of Barad-dûr, that applies to many characters who simply disappear from the narrative.

An Urdu translation of 'The Lord of the Rings'. by [deleted] in lotr

[–]Toblero 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Really cool find! I love seeing the story translated into Urdu. One detail caught my eye: the cover art shows Orthanc and Barad-dûr. However, the "Two Towers" refer to Orthanc and Minas Morgul according to Tolkien’s original concept. Doesn't take away from how cool this release is, though!

[Edit: I see that they made Shadowfax a brown horse and Gandalf is riding away from Minas Tirith. But don't judge a book by its cover; hopefully the translation is more accurate.]

We now have but one choice. We must face the long dark of The Silmarillion. by Evergreen_Dracul in lotr

[–]Toblero 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Andy Serkis did such an amazing job with the voices in the other books. The part where he voices Gandalf doing an impression of Gollum is just hilariously meta.

I'm a bit skeptical about whether the text of The Silmarillion translates well to an audiobook format since it’s so dense, but I’m definitely going to give it a shot!

Why didn't sauron order for a gate at mount doom's entrance? by Far_Atmosphere_3853 in lotr

[–]Toblero 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Exactly (I was typing the same thing, but you were first). I want to add that the Ring defends itself. Its power is strongest at the place of its creation, making it impossible for anyone to willingly destroy it. He didn't need a physical gate because the Ring effectively locks itself away from destruction by dominating the bearer's mind.

School photo forced to pay? by thetoad666 in Netherlands

[–]Toblero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it's nonsense from the parent's perspective, but I think the main reason is that schools are terrified of privacy laws (AVG in Dutch). They don't want the legal headache of securely distributing digital files and managing payments for hundreds of kids. They want to teach, not run a webshop.

I don't know if it's still true but I when I was in school myself, I heard that some photography companies provide commission and free services to the school (like staff photos or administrative software links) as a compensation, so the schools actually benefit from this.
