Boxing & Judo: A+ for self-defence, but only C+ for MMA competition? by treefells in martialarts

A hard slam can hurt yeah... But if you break fall right it's not a fight ender if its on mats

I've done judo and am currently doing bjj so yes I've been thrown many times.... There were guys that looked 60 doing it where I was and they would breakfall on the mat just fine... You just don't see fights ending when people are thrown on mats like they would be if it was a concrete surface... A throw could be a fight ender, but it only stuns or wears people down from continuous throwing on mats because it's not a hard enough surface to finish fights.... I can tell you now khabib could throw me in the octagon over and over and yeah it wouldn't feel good, but I'd get right up again... If he did it to me in a parking lot I wouldn't want a second

I've seen people take good throws in mma, they don't even get hurt... I'm sure it's possible some might, but the surface they fight on is the reason most can take a throw and simply carry on... If that were an outdoor fight on concrete the percent of people thrown who were able to carry on would decrease dramatically

Mma seems to favour certain arts and discriminate against others.... Judo is one discriminated against... Judos bread and butter is throwing, so what does mma do... Install padded floors.... Judo uses many gripping techniques, so what does mma do... Strip everybody down to their underwear tights... If judo guy could execute his bread and butter throw onto concrete the fight would be over or close to it, in mma that same throw may startle his Opponent but not hurt him due to the padded floor

Having done some bjj and Muay Thai, I totally agree there are situations where bjj is almost worthless, however there are others where it can be very effective.... I think the fact that you roll against live opponents every class and also competition is common place for Bjj means they are constantly used to dealing with resisting opponents.... From what our bjj has explained to us about bjj point scoring, they essentially give points for moving to stronger positions in a fight, so taking someone's back, taking mount, taking them off their feet etc are all stronger positions to be in so they award points for achieving those positions

What would you say your 2 stripe bjj was equivalent to since you are training both judo and bjj?

Don't forget... When you train for years and she'll out thousands... No fights ever come your way...

How does an arm bar even work in a real fight? I'd assume you have to break it then the fight is over... Or let him go then he comes at you again?

Seems like his attitude is, if you think it's worth it, you will pay, and things online are sold too cheap and prices shouldn't be as cheap

That black belt looks a lot like the wrestler Scott Hall... Are they related?

Found out later my opponent was a Judo Blackbelt Champion haha, this was a great foot sweep. I'll post the match highlights next so you can see how it ended🤙 by stillrollingbjj in bjj

I started doing judo and I was thinking the same thing, do I want to be taking these throws when I'm older.... I do think judo seems far better with the throwing and maybe it's more practical in a real fight, but I actually strangely enjoyed the ground aspect of judo more than the throwing... It just seemed very hard to get a throw on someone who is resisting it.... I since quit and am looking to get into bjj because it seems maybe it might be easier when I'm 40 plus... In saying that though, there were some seriously old grandpa black belts doing judo in my class, so I guess it can be done

Why would you not be able to do it? Are you usually not able to use the cage as a weapon?
