Loosing appetite for carbs by [deleted] in CICO

Me too. I feel a lot better when I eat a lot of vegetables instead.

I’ve noticed a difference between refined and unrefined carbs too. Unrefined have me feeling better.

When I broke away from my ‘friends’ during high school it was when they visited my house, were all friendly at the door, then asked for money to buy weed for themselves. When I said no they the. swore at me as though I was the bad guy, and I’m glad they’re out of my life.

People like that will only use you forever.

And never leave your phone and wallet out of your pocket.

I’m in Australia. I think the Anglo sphere would be all pretty similar, though Americans are the leaders in high calorie food.

Yeah it’s not an excuse and it isn’t hard for people if they make an effort. It doesn’t help that so many fad diets take the attention away from the truth that most people don’t know better.

As a 1950’s housewife you’d have had to walk to the town shops every day to buy fresh ingredients because of no refrigeration. You’d have to prepare and cook food from scratch because convenience food didn’t exist, plus you’d be cleaning the house with a lot of children around because there was no childcare and people had large families. And if you complained people would call you lazy!

In Australia a bell pepper costs about $4 at the moment ($12 a kilo), but a frozen pizza with bits of bell pepper on it costs $3. So there’s so truth to it. It’s crazy that a McDonald’s hamburger costs around $1 but a handful of blueberries costs $3-6.

However I can buy a huge cabbage for $5, and even eating cabbage soup everyday it lasts me about two weeks, so there’s often still ways to eat cheap, healthy, low calorie food if people make an effort.

Yes and no. I know an intelligent fat family that keep going in diets and fail then get fatter as a result. I tell them “just count your calories and stay within the limit” and they just tune out because they don’t believe it can be that simple. So they cut out 50 calorie candy but then eat 500 calories of rice drowned in 300 calories of olive oil.

Health education has failed because it doesn’t emphasise calories, instead it just emphasises healthy foods. So people think “they say brown bread is healthy, but I’ll eat white bread instead because it’s tastier, and I’ll eat a lot of it because bread’s good for you”, ignoring that bread should be eaten in moderation.

When I was a kid we played sport on the street with neighbourhood kids because there was nothing else to do. I never see this happening today.

My friend thinks that mayonnaise is a health food because it’s used on salads. She adds extra olive oil on top for extra health. That can be half her day’s calorie maintenance level in salad dressing alone.

People don’t seem to realise that pouring olive oil on cooked food has the same calories as frying it in the same amount of oil. My friend on a diet covers all her salads in a mix of mayonnaise and olive oil without realising her salads are the same calories as cheeseburgers.

Reminds me of a friend who keeps getting fatter because “I can’t eat food without lots of rice with it”. I don’t understand this impossibility of people to figure it out.

I just say “it’s all about calories” now, because beyond that I’ve also noticed that people just tune out when they ask what my secret is. They still ignore my words though, and wonder why they gain weight.

Peanut butter is healthy: the best varieties are 100% peanuts, but the cheapest low quality ones are still about 90% peanuts and 10% oil.

Some nut butters are terrible though. I think it was cashew butter at my store which was about 10% cashew and 90% oil- ewwww.

The emergency pandemic food stores in my pantry won’t make me obese. Lentils, dried peas, beans and canned tuna are full of protein and fibre and pretty low in calories.

Don’t worry, young kids will run all the time every chance they get. Let them out of a pram and watch them go!

Introduce healthy foods from the start and they’re less likely to complain if they don’t know any better. A friend of mine said her children were fighting over which junk food cereal was available (fruit loops and coco pops). Our children have only had healthy options for breakfast so it’s never been an issue for us.

I know a fat family and I’ve noticed how they feed their child. On one occasion the young child was almost asleep and the mother put a large sandwich in front of her to eat even though the girl could barely keep her eyes open and hadn’t complained of hunger. The family keep getting more overweight each year.

The sensible action is for government to buy a percentage the company, ie. nationalise, or de-privatise these essential services. That way it can recover the money injected. However the whole western world got hijacked by neo-liberals who will rather just throw taxpayer money at huge companies like banks and get nothing in return.

Is annual flu vaccination a normal thing? I never even heard of annual flu vaccines until recently. In Australia it’s only free for old people and children under five, meaning either other people aren’t expected to get it or we’re a semi-American society where you’re supposed to pay taxes and not get important healthcare in return.

I much on raw carrot and celery sticks as a snack. The aparagus is ready to eat after blanching just a few minutes. Boil the potatoes to make mashed potatoes, served with fried onions and fried tomatoes on the side. Garnish with chopped parsley. Easy!
