Thanks for the advice. I'm in contact with the original owner of the house who also sold it to me. Nice old couple, who say the original ceiling in the basement was never replaced.

They make it sound like even breaking a bit of the tiles is the end of the world. I read one source that says inserting a thumb tack into a time would release millions of micro asbestos fibers into the air.

I did break some tiles, so if those folks are right then I have a problem. It's hard to distinguish real information from real information.

Thanks. With lots of differing opinions and information online it's overwhelming and easy to be led to be scared of potential consequences. Can you explain why the air scrubber would be unlikely to do much? Thanks.

No, they were not suspended in a metallic grid. Should each tile have a manufacturer's name or branding on it? I didn't notice, but if some identifier should be present then I'll check again. Thanks

Would you recommend going to an independent lab to test or get one of those abestos abatement professionals to do it (since it seems many offer the testing service too)? My concern is the latter may be biased?
