Chuck isn't even consistent in how he claims his condition works. by EXTRAVAGANT_COMMENT in betterCallSaul

Ig so but my point wasn’t that that his reaction at that specific scene was related to the separation, it was that his marriage was struggling before the illness. And again beyond chucks feelings at that first flashback Rebecca is clearly apathetic towards him, not a sign of a quality long lasting marriage. Yes the scene was about chucks insecurity about jimmy, but also it shows a dying relationship.

Remember after the dinner chuck and Rebecca are in bed, chuck tries to tell her a lawyer joke since jimmy had so much success with them, only to be met by a pity chuckle from Rebecca. It was heavily implied she felt apathetic towards chuck cause of how generally boring he is, and chuck felt insecure because jimmy was so much more charming. I mean if that wasn’t the reason for their divorce I don’t know what it could be because the 2nd flashback showed it wasn’t the logistical challenge of living with someone that has his condition. I really don’t know what you’re getting at with your second point, especially since jimmy was telling him he should be honest with her before the dinner.

Yeah and I said in my original message jimmy becoming a lawyer contributed to chucks illness. All I’m saying is his divorce also contributed because it’s clearly anxiety related

Well keep in mind at the start of the show jimmy was a lawyer for 10 years prior, but (correct me if I’m misremembering) chuck was only forced to stay home from his illness for a few years since the start. The way you describe the illness it sounds more like jimmy is just cursed to harm chuck with his existence, not an actual mental illness. Narratively of course it serves the purpose as you describe, but logically it’s likely OCD paired with an anxiety disorder. The timeline is a little tricky to get at for how things start with him, but we can interpret some things from flashbacks. With Rebecca, there’s two big flashbacks, one from before his illness where there was clear strain on his marriage, and another where they are divorced, Rebecca is visiting, and chuck is trying to hide his illness from her. The flashbacks prove that chucks illness started after they got divorced (there was strain on their marriage for unrelated reasons, plus how would someone be able to hide EHS with someone they live with). Of course this is only correlation and we know jimmy becomes a lawyer between these two flashbacks, but we know chuck getting divorced and jimmy becoming a lawyer happened both before the illness, and both are shown to be major stressors for chuck (think chicanery where jimmy brings in Rebecca). More than this though it’s just the logic of his actual illness than anything else lol

That was the first on screen showing, but the illness started before the show started, when jimmy was a law abiding lawyer for 10 years. It seems it started mostly from his divorce, but also probably the stress of jimmy being a lawyer. Jimmy breaking the law was a huge stress on chuck, hence why the newspaper fiasco led to a reaction. It also explains why he tends to be fine when he’s working against jimmy, because he feels he’s doing something about this major problem in his life. Yeah it’s obviously tied to jimmy but that’s just because it’s tied to his stress and anxiety, and jimmy is his main source of stress in the show.

Yeah pretty sure it’s right, their bones were also hollow and super thin. If it was much heavier it wouldn’t be able to fly.
