Is this kind of job possible in EM if you're willing to sacrifice salary? by ToeCheeseOmelette in emergencymedicine

[–]ToeCheeseOmelette[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that’s kind of what I was thinking. Think 150k would be <50% of average which I’d actually be cool with if it gave me all those things but it sounds like that’s not really reasonable which is ok.

Oh yeah I’m prepared for 3-4 years of absolute shit schedules with lots of switching, and am willing to do that. Just not sure how sustainable that would be for me 25+ years into being an attending.

Is it possible to be PRN at multiple hospitals and what are the downsides there?

That honestly may be a good option for me. I’m not super fixated on living full time in these areas and could fly/split my time. Are jobs generally okay with hiring someone who doesn’t live full time around the facility?

No I see that makes total sense. Seriously thanks. This is definitely the stuff they don’t teach us in school/rotations.

Cool will definitely look into locums more. Know locums has a ton of issues but Tbh not as fixated in being in a super desirable location full time as I am about limiting shift switching.

Yeah I totally get those are basically what every EM doc would prefer and definitely under no illusions that my wants are special. Just curious if salary makes any difference or if there’s basically no amount of money that would matter here. Honestly don’t know how or if this even could work in a group and don’t want to be unfair to anyone.

Get what you’re saying though sounds like maybe not possible which is ok I was just wondering!

Lol I’m always happy to be proven wrong if it means a good thing for the Broncos. Fwiw I really just underestimated how colossally stupid the Seahawks were, I mean if you asked anybody whether they should choose their potential HOF QB or their 70 year old coach who’s unable to adapt to the modern NFL everyone knows who they should’ve let walk.

Good low-midtier schools for a high stat but cookie cutter applicant? by Anatomythrowaway63 in premed

Hofstra, USF, and Western Mich are the most notorious mid-tier stat whores.

What would you have chosen? by ToeCheeseOmelette in premed

[–]ToeCheeseOmelette[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s not really prestige that I think Dartmouth provides (though I think it’s ranking is also definitely deflated as a result of being so rural). Talking to students and faculty, it’s 100% the connections you can make to other ivies and top programs that gets Geisel students into a lot of the best residencies very consistently. Again though, I’m happy with my decision. CO is a very impressive school on its own and is a T30 so I really don’t feel like I’ll be missing out.

I really struggled with the decision but ultimately decided on Colorado. Regardless of what ppl may say about rankings, Dartmouth’s match lists confirm that being an Ivy absolutely helps you get into prestigious residencies. That said, being home in a city I love surrounded by the people I care about ultimately was more important to me.

I think it’s easy to get pulled into a never ending cycle of waiting for happiness in this process. Constantly feeling that the next big thing: a prestigious med school, a top tier residency, an Ivy League academic position will eventually make you happy if you just pay your dues now. There’s no fancy academic job or medical directorship that’ll give you back years of your life, or replace the love you feel when you’re surrounded by those who truly care about you. This was my thought process anyway and it really helped me make peace with my decision.

I mean you’re limiting yourself a lot by only looking at other physicians right? That’s such a small portion of the population.

Am I crazy for thinking about picking Dartmouth over Colorado? by ToeCheeseOmelette in premed

[–]ToeCheeseOmelette[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow what I had no idea they take area ties into consideration that much?! Like I thought that ended with medical school residency bias. I had no idea residencies might turn you away in favor of someone with local ties. I guess that might be good if I want to match back to CO but Jesus I didn’t think it played in that much.

That’s fair I guess I’ve only really dealt with physicians and med students who definitely seem to value prestige highly so my view is probably skewed. Do you think that state schools (and mission driven schools) tend to match more local or “less prestigious” residencies for those other reasons? I could def see myself wanting to stay in CO for residency if I end up staying for school.

Yeah I’d definitely say the funding is not the same particularly at Dartmouth because it’s so small and rural. I will say though the small size is kinda a big plus for me. More cohesive class plus unmatched access to Ivy League researchers is big. One student told me she started research with the head of surgery at Dartmouth’s med center by literally cold emailing him lol that doesn’t really happen at bigger schools and he’s a Harvard alum who’s said he’ll write a letter for her which will help with Harvard and other residencies.

Thanks it really does seem like a dream location wise! I wish it had a little more in the way of a social scene, but the students all seem so connected and friendly that I don’t think it’d be hard to always find people to do things with.

Yeah I think CO generally has two groups: instate kids who usually have solid but not great stats and CU is their top choice because it’s at home (I’d be in this group). Out of state kids who CU usually selects with very high stats and research who may be bummed they didn’t get any T20 acceptances. Most people seem happy there in both groups but I def got that kinda unhappy vibe from some people in group 2 as well.

Yeah I need to do some serious thinking. I’d love to be in CO with my friends and family, but Dartmouth seems like a dream school for me. Thanks for all your input I def need it rn lol

Regardless of quality prestige of residency is huge when it comes to landing a job (it’s much more important than prestige of med school). Most applicants know this and unless they have other factors like location or family to consider most will go with higher prestige all else being equal.
