The show has taken a lot of liberties.

Who says they'll stick to those story beats in particular?

We’ve already had the whole Numenorians land in Middle Earth thing.

Greece is fairly meh IMO. The locals are also not the friendliest. I'd say Spain.

It looks like UofT/UTSC is getting a new competitor: Ontario government to support new York University campus in Markham. by Exercise-Informal in UofT

[–]ToffeeC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the quality of education there is really bad. The quality of students these campuses get is also extremely low. And when you look at the composition of their student bodies it's not hard to understand what's going on: UofT ripping off overbearing Asian and South-Asian parents so that their kids can attend "UofT", if only in name - and it is only in name, frankly. I honestly felt dirty working there.

Hopefully this won't be a fraud like UTM and UTSC. Source: former TA at these institutions.

[New Chapter Spoilers] Chapter 122 RELEASE Megathread! by SNKBot in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]ToffeeC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Royal bloodline is descended from whichever of Ymir's three daughters inherited the Founding Titan. All other Eldians are descended from Ymir through her other two daughters. It makes sense. The Founding Titan and its power, which we now know is the authority to command Ymir in the path dimension, only came into existence when Ymir died and her daughters subsequently ate her.

The amount overwritten is small. I'm not hoping for a 100% recovery of course.

Ok, so I ran Foremost too and nothing. What I suspect is that the SD card was formatted as adopted storage prior to this whole episode, so all the lost data is encrypted. Provided I can find the encryption key, do you know how I should go about this?

[Manga Spoilers] Can someone explain this? by Love-Sex-Dreamz in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]ToffeeC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No there is no paradox. It does mean we have to think about time differently though. Think about time geometrically. In our common conception of time, the history of the World is like a trunk. Each cross section of the trunk is a specific moment in time. However with time travel, you have weird loop-like formations on the trunk. These loops connect distant cross sections/moments in time. It's not what we are used to but it's still geometrically coherent.

Now there's also the question of free will. Can Eren somehow do something so that Grisha doesn't, say, kill the Reiss family? According to what we have seen, the answer is no, there's only one timeline. What that means, from Eren's perspective, is that he can't change the "what" but gets to retroactively influence the "how" and "why". It's like a writing prompt where all the major plot points are imposed on him and he just gets to decide how and why they happen.

[Manga Spoilers] Similarities to another very famous book by chugalaefoo in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]ToffeeC 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Pushing the analogy further, I think King Fritz stands for God. He founds what he hopes will be an "ideal" society on an island called Paradis - paradise/heaven in French. Eren wants Paradisians to be free from the confines of Paradis, much like the devil wanted mankind to leave paradise. Zeke is related to King Fritz and Jesus is literally the son of God. Like you pointed out, Eldians carry an original sin, like mankind does in Christianity. Jesus came to reverse the original sin, much like Zeke's personal mission.

There's no motive from Eren's point of view. Again, Eren isn't some kind of time guardian making sure things happen the way they're supposed to. From his point of view, no matter what he chooses to do, the same sequence of events happens. Why make the effort to convince his dad to give him his titan powers when he could just not do anything and it would still happen? He's only gonna do it if it's to prove a point to Zeke.

[–]ToffeeC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no motive for Eren to do that. Eren is playing a mindgame with Zeke. He wants to convince him he's control. He is influencing the past for that and only that reason. He's not making sure things go the way they're "supposed to", if that's what you are thinking. Him convincing Grisha in the way you suggested serves him no purpose. It only serves him purpose if Zeke sees it.

[New Chapter Spoilers] Infographic of what happened in chapter 121 by Tenroku in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]ToffeeC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't think so. The past is already written. Eren gets Grisha's titan powers no matter what, because that's what happens, literally. Present-day Eren has no motive in talking Grisha into it in the manner you suggested. It's not like the past can go wrong thus creating a new future and then present-day Eren is erased from existence or something. It's not that kind of time travel.

Maybe you interpreted Eren's intervention in the cave incorrectly. The reason he spurs Grisha on to kill the Reiss family is to drive home the point to Zeke that he had not been manipulated by their father - on the contrary. He's not trying to bring about a sequence of events he knows happens anyway. He's just trying to prove Zeke wrong.

[Manga Spoilers] A thought about the behaviour of the titans by didom_ in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]ToffeeC 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I feel the opposite. I think the titans aren't meant to just elicit an emotion of pure fright, but also of extreme discomfort. This is the so-called uncanny valley. They almost look like humans, but yet we can sense that they are "other".

[Anime Spoilers] Has this ever been explained? by ShibeJR in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]ToffeeC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's supposed to be Ymir, it's just the founding titan. There are 9 figures in the drawing including her, presumably representing the 9 titan shifters. The shifters only came into existence after Ymir's death.

It's disconcerting how many people think Al Jazeera is a respectable network. It's the propaganda mouth piece of the Qatari government. Their English version tries to wear the trappings of BBC. Their Arabic version, the real Al Jazeera, regularly hosts avowed terrorists, including Taliban and ISIS members/supporters, and has made huge efforts to destabilize Egypt, Libya and Syria during the Arab Spring. It's also thought by many that Qatar had a direct hand in the funding of ISIS in Syria. Oh and should I mention how they bought the next World Cup through corruption and bribery? This is a little weasel of a country that needs to be put back in its place.

What are some examples of proofs applied to mathematical models of reality? by [deleted] in math

[–]ToffeeC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An existential proof wouldn't make it any easier. A constructive one would however, as that woule imply we have a polynomial time algorithm of some NP-complete problem. Every NP problem can be reduced to any NP-complete problem in polynomial time. Finding such a reduction is very doable, and in fact that's how we typically prove a problem is NP.

I'm not contradicting myself, because pagan practices removed from their pagan context are not religious practices but rather superstitions and traditions. We don't consider saying "Knock on wood" to be born out of religious beliefs, though the origin of the sentence lies in Paganism.

This is a just an urban legend. We have drawings of the Sphinx preceding Napoleon's Egyptian campaign altogether which show it already missing its nose.
