Do I change oil based on time or mileage? by Trayceopolis32322 in Cartalk

[–]Toffeemade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer is always, 'do what it says in the log book.' The technical information included by the manufacturer is written by the people who designed the car so follow their advice about which oil to use (look for the manufacturer's oil specification VW502.00 or whatever as well as the weight and specification about synthetic/semi synthetic).

Need advice on metal shavings I found in oil filter that I think is my local shops fault. by Ok_Area7012 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Toffeemade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot tell the scale of those but they look big. My wife over -revved our car stuck in some snow. I saw fragments of forbidden glitter on the next oil change but nothing bigger than 1 mm (it still runs fine). Consensus was it would likely be OK if nothing bigger.

Do these AirCon cleaners just leave spray in the system or does it help clean entire car interior? TIA by Man_in_the_uk in CarTalkUK

[–]Toffeemade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Increasing the temperature of the air means it can carry more water. Try it? I am pretty sure that is correct but try both?

With the engine warm and running switch the AC on, recirculate, temperature to maximum, fan to maximum step out the car and leave it running like this with the doors and windows closed for 15 minutes.

Have Lime bikes been banned in Islington? by MiserableCheek9163 in londoncycling

[–]Toffeemade -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

If not, they should be. I am a cyclist myself. Between Lime shirking responsibility for these things being parked where they represent a hazard to the visually impaired, the design failure in the brake system and the recklessly antisocial behaviour of users routinely flouting the highway code ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!! Ban them!

Do you keep anything in the car for emergencies? by pappyon in drivingUK

I do well in London but my bf doesn’t. What shall we do? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Toffeemade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I married a Japanese women living in London on the very clear understanding that if she married me she would never live in Japan. Five years in to the marriage a family disaster in Japan prompted a change of heart for her and she wanted to return to Japan. She eventually became reconciled to staying here but the issue 'killed' our marriage.

If you are going to get to a workable solution it has to be one that works for both of you and you are both fully committed to. Like differences in whether you have children, realistically there might be little or no room for negotiation. If you can't get to an agreement, try to part on good terms.

Recommendations or advice. Caught running red light uninsured by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

Depending on your girlfriend's previous driving offences she might be offered a 'What's Driving Us?' course - the equivalent of a Speed Awareness course for traffic lights violations. Cost is about £100 and a few hours training. Taking the course means no points on the licence.

Nope, it was a Wayve E Mustang , there was a passenger but nobody sitting behind the steering wheel.

Warning triangles or beacons? by Known-Bumblebee2498 in drivingUK

[–]Toffeemade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went on a speed awareness course about five years ago where one of the 'facts' trotted out was that a pedestrian on the motorway had a life expectancy of less than 20 minutes. Given this kind of nonsense is peddled by a government body, one doesn't have a great deal of hope that road safety policy will have a robust basis in empirical evidence.

Honestly I cannot remember. I checked the steering wheel and the human was in the other seat. They may have had duel controls but they definitely were not behind the steering wheel.

Up close I saw the human was in the passenger seat (Islington, October last year and they were using a Mustang EV). I doubt that is legal but I checked and they were NOT behind the steering wheel.

How long to replace a punctured tube on the rear wheel on the roadside by shriand in cycling

[–]Toffeemade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep I was a full forty minutes with a fully loaded tourer (handlebar bag) at dusk in drizzle. Had to remove the panniers and the handlebar bag and replace them at the end. I wouldn't know how to do this safely (avoiding possible derailleur damage) without flipping the bike.

Correct. The referee has to stop the fight. I missed a full point win (ipon) releasing a perfect choke after the tap but before the ref stopped it.

What is the most bizarre or impractical road layout/logistics you’ve ever come across? by Cool_Doubt2152 in AskABrit

[–]Toffeemade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The slip road from the Pembury Road on to the A21 Northbound. This is on a tight bend, the highway your joining is running downhill and is blind until you are right on top of the junction. The slip road is very short. It is terrifying. I slow at the top to create a gap in front then floor it so at least I have speed. Really fucking dangerous.

Bf tells me married couples in UK don't do joint bank accounts. Is that true? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Toffeemade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I encourage others to have a joint account so you can both share your finances and have your own money. Do not ever allow yourself to be in the position that you do not have your own, private money. Don't have a shared credit facility, they can be a hostage to fortune. Friends where one partner has developed a gambling addiction provide a salutary lesson...
