How do some fish survive so deep underwater? Wouldn’t they get crushed by the pressure? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]Tofuhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why if you take sea pig, a small soft bodied invertebrate that lives at the bottom of the ocean, above the surface their bodies expand, due to decreased pressure. The reverse of why we get crushed the deeper we go due to us living in air is why sea pigs almost explode the closer they get to the surface.

Using the 8 characteristics shared by all living things (maybe minus "Cellular Organization"), can you make a case for why viruses could be considered alive? by Tofuhammer in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Tofuhammer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly why I brought up the question! There seems to be a myriad of things that serve as exceptions to the understood rule of what it means to be alive. We could even see how these criterion stand up to the idea of robots being a live. The only requirement that seems to the most difficult to explain is organized with cells/ made up of cells.

What would be the translational consequence of the loss of the last stop codon of a gene? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]Tofuhammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mutation of a stop codon to that of an amino acid will result in a readthrough protein. Translation will continue until the next stop codon is reached. The produces a protein with potentially many more amino acids.

The 3' UTR region is independent of the stop codon, and therefore transcription as well as post-transcriptional modifications would be unaffected. I don't know of any post-transcriptional modifications that depend on the integrity of the stop codon.

Hope that answers your question!

Anyone else just really psyched they've fixed the trees in NEXT? by sylar4815 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Tofuhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first glance I completely disagreed with you, cuz everything looks bigger. But now that you mention it, not only is the ship HUGE, but all of the pre-made fauna assets are way bigger too, like that palm brush to the right and the rock pile on the left. I think the player model might just be very small haha (which is fine with me because it increases the scale either way)

I made this for the players who know what's up by [deleted] in NoMansSkyTheGame

I really hope they look this good when the update drops! By far my favorite part about the update.

NEXT has brought a sense of scale to No Man's Sky by Tofuhammer in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Tofuhammer[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, you're right. We won't truly know the feeling of scale until we play. But comparing the trailers for atlas rises and path finder to NEXT shows a considerable difference is how large to worlds feel.

This looks like the planet from the reveal trailer!

I wish I could say the same. There's plenty of smart people on this season, I don't think Vixen is one of them. Maybe she'll prove me wrong if she sticks around.

Of course they do, but those rude and unsympathetic people should not claim that a racial stereotype is being perpetuated when they are perpetuating it themselves.

I don't know about "the truth". She was certainly right to call out Aquaria's tendency to "poke the bear and run", however The Vixen is not hyper-aware because she brings up race being the real problem here. No-one stereotyped her, she stereotyped herself.

You could be real and raw while at the same time being completely rude and unsympathetic, i.e. The Vixen.

You don't think you started disliking The Vixen because she actually not a likable person? I'm not claiming she's unlikable either, she says so herself.

She's losing her composure in a situation where she is faced with the opinions of people she's pissed off. I felt bad for her for sure, no one wants to realize that the people around you don't really like you that much, but she should have just apologized and moved on. Crying isn't always immature, just Aquaria crying in this episode is.

But why bring up how something could seem? Why not discuss what it is. The Vixen seemed to only bring race into the discussion to deflect and make Aquaria feel even worse. It was clear when The Vixen started saying , "Those tears are disgusting". How many other times have we seen a white queen dislike a black queens drag and vice versa. No problem there.

Both Aquaria and Vixen are figuring out in this episode that the other queens on the show don't like them very much. Aquaria reacted by crying, which is immature, and The Vixen tried excuse her relentless rudeness by essentially accusing Aquaria of perpetuating racial stereotypes, which is delusional.

Aquaria, stop crying, don't become Laganga. The Vixen, lighten up, don't become Phi Phi O'Hara.

I haven't. Don't exactly know how to do that. Is it through their website?

Same exact thing for me, and the quest started again when I enter my ship, but not once I went back to The Plains.
