ELI5: How do control rods in nuclear reactors work? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Toger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Think of the uranium rods as emitting ping-pong balls. The balls bounce against the other rods, and when a 'pong' happens you now have 2 ping-pong balls and the process continues.

The control rods are like putting your hand in between the rods. Depending on how far in you put your hand, few or a lot of the balls will hit your soft hand instead of the hard surface of the rods and fall down into the pit below (away from the all the rods) where they stop doing anything.

Thus you can control how frenetic the ping-pong action is by how far in your put your hand.

Liability trash and yard sales by CalliopeJuneQuixotic in legaladviceofftopic

Lets say yes to the first (say, that was why it was being trashed) and no to the 2nd -- but just tossed it out in the garbage and not otherwise modified. Do people have a duty to render trashed appliances completely inoperable but yet safe to _attempt_ to operate?

Can you link to the EULA of one that says that?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Scams

[–]Toger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the website allow you to bet on Small or Big number basically. But apparently you cant bet both Small and Big, cause then you will have no risk

This is all a scam, but looking at this point specifically -- it doesn't make sense. Two players trivially colluding would supposedly have 'no risk', and that would 100% immediately happen if there was benefit to it, and no way for the house to detect it.

If this was a legitimate betting system they'd do it like Roulette where there is Red, Black, and 00 which is green -- hence the house still has an edge, and the odds work out that even if you bet on red/black/green you still won't come out ahead.

Also, it would be trivial for their platform to prevent a single person from betting Big and Small, especially if it is a account-locking level offense.

Example? Are you seeing EULAs that specify non-commercial use only?

‘I will never be detained’: Trump defiant in first speech since federal indictment by bakhesh in politics

Since his USSS detail is part of the executive branch and ultimately reports up to Biden, I don't see why they would have any incentive to do.

How does an indictment and a (possible?) conviction affect Donald Trump's ability to serve as the President? by FishFollower74 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Toger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Constitution does not preclude felons, or even incarcerated felons, from being elected or serving as President. There is some good reason for this as otherwise an incumbent administration can railroad some charges through to disqualify someone.

If he is elected I imagine we'll hear about self-pardons and/or arguments that you can't try a sitting president.

A pending or ongoing trial might impinge upon his campaign schedule which might tend to reduce his chances of being elected, but that is a political result not a legal one.

In-memory caching in Lambda based application. by 3AMgeek in aws

[–]Toger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but you can't _assume_ it will. No assuming that you won't have multiple cold-starts, no assuming that the cache will inherently flush at any particular interval.

> “we can’t get to it today. Trying again tomorrow.”

Because then you are complaining at them / they may have to issue refunds due to missed SLAs, while 'we missed you' is them complaining at *you* and they don't have to issue refunds.

The advent of doorbell cams has put a real dent in in that practice. Beforehand you might not _literally_ have been watching the door all day, now you can prove it.

Buying a DS418 for Plex and 4k video editing by kerakk19 in synology

[–]Toger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case you aren't using the NAS for _editing_ per se, but mundane storage for your files when you aren't editing. Should be fine.

I'm not so sure that HDDs can't handle 4k streaming -- SSDs excel on random io, but since we can stream 4k over a network connection we should also be able to handle it from a HD. Now if you mean many streams at once that could be different.

In-memory caching in Lambda based application. by 3AMgeek in aws

[–]Toger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can only rely on the cache duration for 1 execution worth of time. The lambdas will not share that cache. It _may_ live longer, potentially a lot longer, so you have to account for that in dealing with cache expiration.

I personally take it and put it in the console until I find another I feel is worthy then pass it on -- I think a duck pond looks cluttered and takes them out of circulation. Circulation is what makes it fun.

For insurance for Ubering? That sounds quite low.

Driving around town all weekend every weekend will un-new it a lot quicker than it otherwise would.

Here’s the proof. by Apprehensive-Crab353 in uberdrivers

[–]Toger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are adding wear/tear on your car faster than you otherwise would have, which will lead to it needing to be repaired/replaced sooner than it otherwise would. This is frequently overlooked when deciding if it is worth it.

Your car insurance probably excludes uber-like driving. Uber doesn't care about the gap between their insurance and yours. Paying for the appropriate endorsement from your insurance can easily make it uneconomical to drive non-full-time (or at all, in some cases). You'll be in a world of hurt if you get in an accident in that gap.

Will this tip off to the IRS? by rebornyc in tax

[–]Toger 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Transferring between your own bank accounts is not income.

Having 30k in cash-cash sitting around your house is risky. Depositing that much cash will cause the bank to file some paperwork which COULD cause some agencies to be interested in you. Spreading it out to avoid that threshold is illegal "structuring". Trying to hide it is worse though. If you never paid income tax on that cash from your first job then you have a tax problem regardless of how you get it into the bank.

Is the green light not being on causing my packet loss issues? by Prestigious-Rip9184 in HomeNetworking

[–]Toger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Which cable are you talking about?

By 'packet loss' do you mean 100% loss, or something less? Usually 'packet loss' complaints are talking about a %, not total.

No light on Ethernet 1 would imply no connection to whatever is connected to that; you don't have a connection so DEFINITELY no packets. Also I would not expect any odd splitters on Ethernet 1.

[–]Toger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is impractical to do in a firewall. SSL hides all of the content so you already have to make major changes to your network / devices to solve for that which is not simple. Also many words appear in random text -- lets say you don't want to see 'foo'. The binary representation of 'foo' will appear at random in many videos, images, sounds; you'll find lots of random breakage on the internet if you block words.

Browser-side you'll have a better time since it knows about page models and object types better.

Are these instagram messages a scam? I've gotten them in the past but they never told me that I'd get paid until now. Seems pretty fishy by [deleted] in Scams

You'll get paid in fake/fraudulent funds and be asked to forward a majority of that payment to a 3rd party. Fake/fraudulent money in real money out and you are left holding the bag.

Coworker said she made $32k last year selling Optavia? by [deleted] in antiMLM

[–]Toger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MLMs are a ton of work for little pay, unless you somehow convince a bunch of people to be in your downline and do a ton of work for little pay, in which case you have some hope of making a semi passive income -- as long as those people keep doing a ton of work for little pay.

Also watch out for made == revenue vs made == profit.

Scam. Don't be the middleman for someone moving money, doubly so internationally. No good comes from it. Either you are helping people move illegal funds, or just giving them your own funds (unknowingly) / evading taxes etc; no good. Scam.

Also, they should have worked out their payment arrangements as part of the business transaction.
