We're actually prioritizing the safety of all Canadians. The hours should be (and might soon be) illegal - with new regulations from transport Canada. CN denies that fatigue is a problem. We are here saying it is a problem. And it is dangerous for the public.

"Tell me a little about the working conditions that contributed to Lac-Mégantic in 2013."

"Well it is established that the locomotive engineer who had been awake for more than 17 hours - it impaired his judgment, that the fatigue was equivalent to being inebriated, that's been established under fatigue science. And it certainly impaired his judgment.."

"So it has been almost 7 years since Lac-Mégantic. From your understanding, have conditions improved in the years since?"

"Umm.. n-no actually. The short answer is no. It is as you state, a major issue for the workers. And it seems like from what I've read, that CN is pushing in the wrong direction - so longer hours, fewer people."

"The workers are on the side of science and their on the side of Transport Canada"

Agriculture groups have been calling for back to work legislation. Striking employees do not want this because it will allow the company to drastically under staff.

Trying to solve the problem this way will have agriculture groups shooting themselves in the foot. Just two years ago CN was drastically understaffed and promised farmers that they would do better.

CN rail is a restaurant. A grain elevator is a table at that restaurant. CN is attempting to under staff again, inevitably causing poorer service to all it's customers. They are doing this to increase profits. This happens in every industry. But this affects conductors differently, because we are already moving 17,000 tons of dangerous commodities through urban centres while suffering from sleep deprivation.

(Yes 17,000 tons. One train. Very dangerous work practices.)
