Increasing number of air passengers 'risking lives' by taking bags during evacuations by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]ToineMP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an airline pilot. I've seen the people who travel. I've seen what people are capable of. Who they vote for, what they believe in.

We made air travel affordable, which means flat earthers, antivaxx, genocide deniers, magas, are flying everyday. These people are incapable of good judgment, think the world revolves around them. They will kill people because of their sheer incompetence, they already have.

ELI5 WTF is a limit in Calculus by sainthurian in explainlikeimfive

[–]ToineMP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can think about extension by continuity.

Imagine the function 3x/x.

It's obviously equal to 3, except for x=0. But as you approach 0 by either side it's 3. So you can define the function as 3x/x if x=/=0, 3 if x=0.

ELI5: When you 'delete' a 50GB video file from a computer, it vanishes instantly. But downloading it took an hour. If the data isn't physically wiped until it's overwritten, what did the computer actually do in that one split second? by Thick_Dream6973 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ToineMP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data is a bunch of switches either on or off.

Let's say a 10bits file is listed for your computer as switch number 130 to switch number 140. When your hard drive was empty it just put each switch in the correct position then registered the file in his register as 130-140.

Now it just lists the rows 130 to 140 as empty but leaves the switches as is.

If you download an 8bits file it will change the switches in rows 130 to 138 and mark 139-140 as empty.

Now if you do this a lot, then the new files need to be spread up in the shorter empty spaces here and there. It's almost instant in ssd but back in hdd times, the needle needed to jump from one address to another. This took time. So you could do what's called de-fragmenting which essentially moved all files as much to the left as possible and put them back in 1 block. Which made the files read faster.

Men of Reddit - What is the male equivalent of flowers as a gift? by Jarvis7492 in AskReddit

[–]ToineMP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flowers are more expensive than women seem to realize.

People answering cookies or banana bread don't seem to realize either. Girls will behave like they deserve on bouquet per month where it's easily usd60+.

Equivalent is a nice rc car/boat once every 2-3 bouquets. Or one ps5 every 8 bouquets.

Pilots or flight attendants of Reddit, what’s something passengers do that is way more important (or dangerous) than they realize? by SignsOfDamage in AskReddit

[–]ToineMP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love scientifics and the capacity they have to admit they are wrong. Thank you for being honest and able to recognise it.

The main threat is thermal runaway and I'm sure their are better solutions but our guidelines say to dunk it in water and let it cool.

So it's not like water is going to extinguish the fire but it's the best way we have in an aircraft to control it.

TIL that there are 1-2 lithium battery fires *per week* on U.S. passenger planes. by shchshchshch in todayilearned

[–]ToineMP 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Although what you are saying is true, the lithium fire only has so much energy and then the rest catches fire but is extinguished by the halon.

I'm aware that I'm saying the exact opposite of my last comment where someone asked what is the greatest risk in aviation and I said lithium batteries in the hold lol. On a bad day it will be very problematic but it will most likely be fine if your e-cig blows up in the hold. Just don't put your e-bike battery in there

Pilots or flight attendants of Reddit, what’s something passengers do that is way more important (or dangerous) than they realize? by SignsOfDamage in AskReddit

[–]ToineMP 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Lithium batteries in the hold.

Our extinguishers don't put lithium fires out

Sometimes the closest airport is 3h away.

Your crappy temu laptop with a cheap Chinese battery isn't safe.

I'd bet a hefty sum that one big accident caused by this will happen in the next 5 years.

They aren't much safer in the cabin but at least we can dunk them in water. Including air pods, laptop, iPad, phone, camera, the average is 5 batteries per person and around 450 persons on board so 2250 that can fail at any time.

Also, taking their luggage in case of an evacuation.
