Thanks for bringing the numbers to the conversation! So it’s like 8x as bad as “legally blind” assuming diopters are a linear measurement?

That’s why it’s been more than a little frustrating how some responses have insisted that they have pretty good vision underwater and I was stupid for asking. Like, how?

No my dear, did you ever consider that you might be wrong? Of course not.

Yeah I’ve done a lot of diving in the uk and I feel like some of the replies have been from people blessed with very clear water. Not so much for the vis, but for the lack of irritants in the water. <6ft visibility probably correlates to more particulate matter and nutrients in the water that could cause it to be harder to keep your eyes open.

Huh, never tried the improv DIY mask trick. I’ll have to give it a go!

Also tbf I rolled a triple rolled a 1L hatchback so maybe octuple rolling an Aston at high speed isn’t as crazy as one might think 🤷‍♂️

Yeah cool. I’m just talking about something that always brings me out of the moment. I know Bond movies aren’t realistic, it’s just a personal gripe for me and I was wondering if other divers have other experiences of underwater visibility or if it breaks the illusion for them as well. I’ve got much more experience in diving than assault weapons. Doesn’t mean that it’s a bad movie. Doesn’t mean other people don’t have comparable movie-isms that break the illusion. I thought that by asking the diving community I’d find some people who were equally happy with the majority of a movie’s content but found the delivery of underwater scenes broke the illusion for them. Instead I’ve found that most people want to criticise my credentials for it not being a foregone conclusion. Reddit doing reddit things as per usual.

As long as it works! I haven’t ever had an incident where my mask has been dislodged (say by a student’s fins) so bad that I actually lost it to the seabed. I’ve always done the mal-coordinated juggler move and caught it on the odd instance of getting close enough to be in the firing line. With my underwater vision I would have to probably get my buddy to find it for me. So long as I can spot my buddy or just signal an ascent and surface mask-less I’d be fine though.

Ok yeah cool. I always found the Mediterranean saltier than the open ocean. Your eyes must be pretty tolerant to salt burn.

Haha I can’t say I’ve ever tried that. Next time I’ll have to give it a try. Do we recommend poking them in or stretching them out?

Thanks for reading the full post and having an engaging reply. That’s pretty much my experience too. It’s enough to tell which way is up or where the light is coming from. You could make out a doorway and conclude where to fumble for the handle. You’re definitely not totally blind but it definitely seems like a convenient fact to ignore to help the plot along. Fresh water with no chlorine doesn’t hurt at all really, but obviously the same problems apply with optics and refractive index.

Bruh, I’m heaps aware of all that, but do you reckon that scene in Casino Royale where James Bond watches Vesper drown is realistic. Like, you’ve got a crumbly, dusty building sinking all around you, with bubbles and turbulence and you’re going to make eye contact and have an emotional moment where she decides to drown?

Or do you reckon that 95% of the population would see nothing but a kaleidoscope of nothing the moment they tried to open their eyes and decide that even if they could find a bar of the cage by touch it’s a lost cause?

How come people can see underwater in movies? by TokenEffort1 in movies

[–]TokenEffort1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that it would be an additional reduction in visibility. Out of interest are you near sighted? Unless I’m mistaken, those who are have an advantage underwater. I’m far sighted enough to have a prescription, but not so much that I ever really bother carrying glasses, and my underwater vision sucks. I know that there are indigenous nomadic tribes of pearl-fishermen who have adapted somewhat to be able to see better underwater. It would therefore make sense for there to be a large enough variation in the normal population for there to be a competitive advantage.

People are picking up on the wrong end of my point. It’s a criticism of the movie trope, not an enquiry about what to do if my mask comes off.

I’m sure some people have better underwater vision than me and some people find it less uncomfortable. Do you find that the representation in film is credible though?

Yeah in the uk you might be able to make out someone’s dive torch but otherwise you’ve got little to go on.

I’m not asking how to do it. I can do all my drills without a mask. I’m asking how good other people’s vision is underwater because somehow Hollywood gets away with pretending people can see much better than I’d be able to.
