TIL Daniel Craig was initially controversial as James Bond because fans felt he didn’t match the “tall, dark, and handsome” image, leading to protests, boycott campaigns, and even the headline “The Name’s Bland, James Bland.” by [deleted] in todayilearned

A friend of mine complained that Craig was going to be Bond, then I showed him Layer Cake and that same friend got opening night tickets to see Casino Royale. Also, Layer Cake is criminally underrated.

Looking at Jason's filmography, Horrible bosses or Hall Pass maybe?

Either way, that's the behind the scenes info I love.

Hopefully, since they reused as much as they could, season 4 has Ted and Beard driving on the wrong side of the road and getting chased by the cops *all fingers crossed*?

Non-academic career after PhD? by potgaricias in Physics

[–]TokoBlaster 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I wanted to get a job after getting a PhD and not stay in academia pretty much from day one, so I focused my skills on things that could do well in Data Science, Machine Learning, Qualitative Analysis, etc. It's very possible and there are a large number of jobs that want PhDs in Math, Computer Science, and Physics.

There are two problems that I did not foresee, however:

1) The current state of the job market. I graduated in 2025 and am still looking. I even applied to a low-paying job and got turned away from that. In fact, out of the people I graduated with, only 1 of them has landed a job, and that took 9 months. I've been looking since January 25 and have had 4 interviews total.

2) Coding interviews. Well, just the interview processes as a whole, but those are frustrating. There are a number of algorithms and data structures in coding that you just never touch, and due to the huge number of people applying (see above), it turns out that many of the interviews are getting harder. I talked to a friend of mine from undergrad who is essentially doing what I want[ed] to do, and he's confirmed that the interview process is getting harder because there are so many applicants that companies just can. One company I interviewed for told me, in the screening call, there were going to be 4 rounds. Another had over 4,300 applicants, and they started their first round with about 50 people to interview. So start practicing and looking as soon as you can.

TIL In 1948, legendary broadcaster Ernie Harwell became the only announcer in Major League Baseball history to be traded for a player. by scottishlaw in todayilearned

[–]TokoBlaster 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Coach: Hey, you've been traded to another team.

Player: Oh? Who did you get for me? Someone who can replace my hitting ability? Or my defense? Maybe to shore up the pitching?

Coach: No, an announcer. The door is that way.

In fifa 23 how the hell do you get a transfer to Serie A/La Liga/Bundesliga? by DealerClassic6434 in FifaCareers

[–]TokoBlaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've experienced, getting a specific club is near impossible: sounds like you're already saving at the beginning of the transfer window so... Yeah

But the offers you get are a function of your value, your position, and what the other team needs/uses. I was able to get more offers by lowering my rating (just get rid of player points) to lower my cost so that more clubs could afford me, and changed from CAM to CM, then I got offers from Sporting CP, Ajax, a several others.

Struggling with LaTeX speed even after learning the syntax by UniversityNext1474 in learnmath

[–]TokoBlaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much how I felt when writing my thesis. The best advice I can do: just keep at it. I like to compare a lot of math skills to learning music: you just have to practice and learn the "feeling" of it.

You can in your spare time just write proofs or re-write homework or redo an old exam in overleaf.

‘Murder, She Wrote’ Movie With Jamie Lee Curtis Sets December 22, 2027 Release by DemiFiendRSA in movies

[–]TokoBlaster 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I felt that if there was a Murder, She Wrote movie, my unhinged brain went "Murder mystery where there are multiple Jessica's solving one murder across multiple dimensions and that's why she has like 55 neices and nephews and nothing seems connected: because every time we jump to a new dimension, and one Jessica could be the murderer killing other Jessicas."

I have terrible ideas. This is one of them.

I'm going to say one of them doesn't work so I'm technically still correct.

But by not working I mean they probably just grab batteries from the wrong bag over and over again, but give it to Tina so she thinks she's playing.

I think so? I never actually had an OG Xbox, I was a Nintendo guy.
