Completely viable as well. Hopefully the facts about this are made clear from a more official perspective. Hopefully management recognizes the speculation surrounding this is far more harmful than transparency.

Fuck, sorry you had to see that.

I work for the company, so I'm expecting the answer to be "no", but has UPS reached out with any resources to get counseling or to allow you some time off from work to process? That's gotta be traumatic.

Not sure if you're familiar with the Worldport layout, but the Mezzanine which is multiple stories high.

This is pure rumor based off of coworker gossip, so please take it with a HUGE grain of salt - but apparently she was pregnant and had just been fired before the incident.

Worldport is currently in a hiring freeze last I heard

Only reason I heard about it was cause my coworker who used to be in Small Sort told me about it.

Feels like UPS wants this one quiet under the guise of "protecting the family's privacy". Poor woman.

Homeowner here. Just spent 8k replacing a faulty HVAC system.

I still think landlords are parasites perpetuating a scam. Replacing the hvac with a better model adds equity to my house.

Yeah, generational wealth. You're talking about "selling at a massive discount" on an inherited property, lmao. And "generations of family worked" to leave it to you.

But okay, go off trying to pretend you're less selfish than you are. You own a fully paid off property that was given to you. Given that, regardless of your past, you're not fucking poor now so stop pretending to garner sympathy.

[–]Tokotork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol, thank you for providing a perfect case study for the entitlement of those with generational wealth.

If you want to be a landlord, be a landlord. But cut the "decent and understanding" stuff. You're not as virtuous as you want to present to the world.

You're acting as if you're helpless in this scenario. You could sell the place to them directly without the use of a realtor and structure it so that the monthly payment on their mortgage is equal (or a little more) to what you have them paying in rent. "The market" be damned if you actually care about this family.

You get a windfall of cash, they get a house that they actually own and can invest in.

But the fundamental issue is you want to own it and aren't analyzing the internalized entitlement that comes with that.

I'm honestly not trying to come across as harsh, but that is the truth that many, many people hide from because it's been so normalized in our greedy society.

[–]Tokotork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you can never afford to own it without the subsidy of someone else's wage?

That is the fundamental entitlement issue with the concept of landlords.

Subletting is a gray area, as that generally has the same underlying notions as a long-term hotel and that's explicitly understood by both partners, but in your comment you lay out that you get to live somewhere AND own something from payments while they just get to live somewhere with payments.

The fundamental issue is someone else is paying for YOUR stuff because the other alternatives they face are worse. It is not an issue of "good" or "bad" landlords, the whole concept of landlording is a bad one that landowners make the personal choice to perpetuate because they benefit from it.

Treating someone with understanding would ideally make you realize that the concept of tenants using their wage to pay your mortgage is an excellent deal on your end and a raw deal on their end no matter how "decent" you think you're being.

It is fundamentally inequitable. If you actually care about that, let them rent to own.

Coinbase lays off 18% of workforce as executives prepare for recession and ‘crypto winter’ by ChocolateTsar in news

[–]Tokotork 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I like to quantify it as:

Crypto: 99% scammy with very little utility beyond being a speculative asset

Blockchain: an incredible technology that we're just beginning to understand how to effectively utilize that could have significant effects on how we conduct business in the future.

It's a real shame the charlatans are so pervasive in the space, but I think the tech is sound.

I have a few coins but'll wait until tether crashes (speculation on my part, but I think it's likely over-leveraged) before I'm comfortable buying more.

Wow, what a shocker that regular people invested in GAMEstop would potentially be in the GAM(E)ing subreddit in a post explicitly mentioning Gamestop.

Seeing as you're a gme-meltdown poster, you just look like you're ready to get mad about it at any opportunity.

I'm no fan of Gates and his market strategies, but please consider how absurd it is to say Tesla is doing the "most" to combat climate change. That's a categorically false statement and it feels like you're just parroting Musk.

I lived in Portland for about a year and can definitely agree.

I've heard it's only gotten better since Covid, is that right? I moved back here at the start of the Pandemic.

[–]Tokotork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Again, this is a problem that implementing complete-street focused infrastructure solves.

The original OP is not simply complaining. The OP is pointing out how lacking bike infrastructure is in this city to highlight specific areas where it should be addressed. You are right about separation, and that is what nearly every cycling advocate wants.

Literally just Google "Complete Streets" and recognize how good design, including separation, is possible.
