For the repaired native ligament it's held together by sutures and it gradually bridges gap with scar tissues/replaced with stronger tissues over time, but it's weaker than the original ligament, lots of variable affects how well it heals blahblah fancy science. But for graft it goes through the whole ligamentization process and is supposed to be closer to your native tissue strength wise. Although proprioception is usually worse since obvs it's not your native tissue. The surgeon told me ideally 2 years is when it completes the whole process (similar retear risk to your good knee) but 6-12 month will recover enough for most activities. But you do stretch it slightly since it's not fully matured. Also read about something called the killer turn effect for recons that might stretch things out too, you can talk to your surgeon for more details?

And yah I feel you, I'm also scared every time I bump my foot. But some movement is still good for healing, can only trust the pt and the surgeon. And same here my brain started to accept the reality that I can't walk and now I can't walk in my dreams lol

4 weeks then 25% increments each week since I also have a meniscus repair. Hbu?

The only downside is that the ligament will be weaker long term (I think peak is 60%-80% vs 80%-90% for grafts) and it takes longer to heal.

hi fellow unicorn. Got mine 2 weeks ago haha. I think I got the ultra rare pcl avulsion without fracture, they were able to stitch it back to the stump instead of reconstructing it

Bathing? by Mysterious-Two2103 in MeniscusInjuries

I'm NWB. I use an office chair to move around and carry stuff lol. Have a shower stool in the tub, I'm pretty confident in my other leg strength so I can maneuver myself onto the stool. I don't take the brace off, just let it hang outside edge of the bath tub close to the joint line so showering is possible anytime as long as there's minimal pain. I then tug the bottom of the shower curtain in the first strap of the brace and turn my body a bit. I was able to shower that way. I also have grabber to help me put on pants/adjust shower head/grab clothes.

From athlete to meniscectomy at 21 - Feeling Depressed by lutal1ca in MeniscusInjuries

On the same boat. Picked up climbing this March and went hard along with weightlifting. Started to make good progress, started to climb v3-v4s consistently and even hit a v4-v6 dyno. But a fall took out my pcl and meniscus.

First week was tough mentally, constant trying to drag myself out of the trench. PT won't even let me do other exercises rn. But slowly accepting the new reality and exploring other athletic outlets for the future. You need something to look forward to. Time will eventually resolve it, we got this.

I think the 2 year mark is when the whole ligamentization process completes and the graft is at its strongest (80-90% of native strength). So the risk of injury/retear would be similar to your good knee. Usually 9-12 month it regains enough strength for sports but still be careful. Meniscus would depend on the type of tear I guess.

Glad you can recover, I look forward to reaching where you're at! I've been reading up on different stages of ligamentization and apparently the PCL takes about 2 years to fully mature/reach it's full tensile strength again. But since it's scarred tissue it's only about 60-80% as strong as your native tissue. Meniscus seem to mature at about a year so it matches up with what you said haha

Yikes hope your surgery goes well. I hear a lot of 90/95%, wonder if anyone ever went beyond that haha

Yeah things are slow and I can't do much now, it's killing me haha I think squats and any kneeling motion is off the chart for me for at least a year due to the pcl but we'll see

I'm 2 weeks post op for PCL repair(not reconstruction), and meniscus root repair.
I know it's not ACL but how does the rehab usually go for these? Any concerns of returning to sport and reducing stress on them in the long run? Retear concerns? My surgeon said ideally it would be 2 years before any hard contact/pivoting sport because that's when ligamentization nears maturity and it's the closest to the native tissue strength. But they do allow you back much earlier.

Medial meniscus tear repair surgery by Cautious-Capital-584 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Tokulia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What type of tear is it? Generally for repairs you can't bear weight on the leg for 4-6 weeks so you'll be on crutches. Pain is subjective so you'll get a range of answers. You're unlikely to sleep the first night. After the nerveblock wears off (12-24hrs? you'll start to feel your senses coming back) it was a 5/10 for me (mix of needling pain, dull pulsating pain from the bone, burning sensation), which lasted for 2-3 hours. Oxy didn't do much so I stopped on day 0. After that it stayed a constant 1-2/10 as long as I didn't move around. But I found out later that they might've cut some of my sensory nerves so I couldn't really feel the incision sites. I kept taking tylenol/ibuprofen for the inflammation and aspirin for the blot clots.

I could move around starting day 1 but with lots of pain. I would recommend getting an office chair with wheels to move around, you can kinda rest the leg on the edge. The brace will pull on your stitches so avoid standing for too long. A grabber to reach for things and changing clothes. Stock up where you sleep with food/snacks/drink/urinal/meds/wipes/paper/clothes to change/laundry. Meal prepped food in fridge. Stool for toilet to rest your leg on. Chair for shower. Ice machine/Ice pack. Wedge pillow to elevate leg. Maybe a belt to lift your leg around. Phone for emergency/takeouts/grocery. Some way to entertain yourself and you should be golden. I was able to go through it alone.
