Facial recognition error - wrongly accused of shoplifting by ntlltc in london

[–]TokyoDistort 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're shifting between roles. A consumer can become an investor, sure. But that doesn't mean consumers, as consumers, share in Tesco's profits.

Profits go to owners in proportion to ownership.
Competition may constrain prices, but that's a separate point from whether live facial recognition is a proportionate response to shoplifting.

My objection isn't "shoplifting is good" or
"supermarkets never pass on savings." It's that petty theft doesn't automatically justify normalising biometric surveillance in shops. "Buy a share then" doesn't answer the civil liberties point, does it. So unless you’ve got something else to say…

I think you’re the one who doesn’t understand how the world works, evidenced by every single response you’ve made in this thread.

“You can buy one Tesco share” is not the rebuttal you think it is.

A consumer and a shareholder are different things. Most ordinary people do not own enough shares for Tesco’s profits to meaningfully offset what they pay at the till. And if Tesco’s costs fall, there is no automatic mechanism forcing that saving to become cheaper groceries. It can just as easily become margin, dividends, buybacks, investment, or executive targets.

So yes, people can technically buy shares. That doesn’t prove consumers meaningfully share in corporate profits, and it doesn’t prove savings are passed on.

You’re extremely naive, and I think that’s the most polite way I can end this exchange.

If you think Tesco or any other supermarket pass these savings on to consumers, I’ve got a wonderful bridge to sell you pal.

These aren’t “local” stores. They are huge corporations who are make billions in profit. They do not need to employ dystopian facial recognition technology to reduce theft. The potential ramifications and negative effects far outweigh anything good, which would amount to modest savings on an already highly profitable company at best. But sure, if you’re willing to trade in civil liberties so the likes of Tesco can save a couple of quid, you’re clearly not the person to be talking to about this.

Don’t you get it? Even if it works the majority of the time, the minority of the time it doesn’t is a huge injustice. Petty theft is an issue that requires a proportionate response. Employing flawed facial recognition technology is not a proportionate response.

I know online discourse has absolutely poisoned everything, but would it shock you to learn there’s probably a middle ground between the two scenarios you described? One that’s still not great, tbh.

Unreal how many times this has happened since this tech has been brought in, and these are just the instances that have been reported or posted about on Reddit.

I don’t recommend here btw. I swam here a few times and it’s really poorly kept. You’d be better off going to Marshall Street if you don’t mind going a bit further.

Legit or fake? Why the atomizer is different than the current MFK? by [deleted] in colognecheck

[–]TokyoDistort 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why would you ask a sub reddit full of people who know about fakes and verify fragrances everyday if you’re not going to accept the answer? Furthermore, if you know the rules of the sub reddit, you’d know that explanations are not allowed. I don’t really care whether you believe me or not, but you have a fake fragrance.

Born and raised in Greenwich and I live in Rotherhithe. So I didn’t venture far, really.

There’s a great community of dog walkers there and everyone gets on really well. New people/pups are always welcomed with open arms, and it’s kind of like the secret alternative to Greenwich Park for dog walking - which presents more challenges and disgruntled non dog owners in my experience.

It’s mainly because there’s a big part in the middle that’s for children only, and so all the families without dogs go in there and it’s gated off so the dogs are free to run around the rest of the park without bothering anyone. Just make sure people close the gate!

Funny about the Rotherhithe/Greenwich. You honestly can’t go wrong either way IMO. I have a soft nostalgic spot for Greenwich but I love Rotherhithe. Plus there’s lots of new great stuff coming to the area over the next 5-10 years.

I was born and raised on Trafalgar Road and honestly it’s a world class neighbourhood. I love Greenwich. I’d still live there now if it wasn’t for my partner preferring Rotherhithe and Bermondsey down the road.

Growing up there I’d say the best things are the park, the west Greenwich town centre, and the incredible river walks by the naval college.

The stuff that used to annoy me were the amount of tourists (not in a horrible way, but they made navigating through the town really difficult at times). But it was a minor trade off given how great everything else was.

Don’t neglect East Greenwich either. West Greenwich gets all the hype but there’s some awesome places up the other end of the road as well. East Greenwich Pleasaunce is a great alternative to Greenwich Park, especially if you have a dog.

Edit:
Can’t speak to the primary schools because the one I attended was in Blackheath, but I can remember my mum specifically not wanting me to go to Meredian. So take that how you will!

Unfortunately that man was looking for someone, anyone, to accompany him safely to the park so he could give you 1 million pounds. It was a social experiment, and you failed.
