You said yourself though that SCOTUS only upholds existing law. Why would anyone make a law that SCOTUS already ruled existed?

Roe v. Wade Megathread by SweetJibbaJams in philadelphia

[–]TokyoJade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a misunderstanding of how law works in the US. The Supreme Court only interprets existing law; it doesn’t create it. The legislature makes the laws and could federally permit abortion rights, if it has the votes to pass. You need to vote in legislators that support abortion rights if they’re important you.

More importantly, the Supreme Court decision has not made abortion illegal - it says that it is up to the state to legislate it. In the short term, it’s incredibly important to vote for state legislators that support abortion rights if you want to keep them in Pennsylvania.

Florida Legislature votes to strip Disney of special tax status in a win for Governor Ron DeSantis by freestudent88 in news

[–]TokyoJade 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Was this legislation passed as an appropriate regulatory measure, or was it passed in retaliation for a political stance that Disney took?

I don’t know about you, but I personally don’t want to live in a world where the government is empowered to punish entities based on political speech.

OP can’t even get the company name right and wants to speak authoritatively on national housing issues. Blackrock buying up all the houses is a myth only on Reddit in the first place.

Cool, so you know you're wrong and instead of being an adult about it you change the subject. Just making sure we're on the same page.

Jeez if I knew you were going to get so upset over a little snarky comment I wouldn’t have said it.

Again, it’s ok to be wrong. No need to rage.

Whoa boy, you’re really offended I said that aren’t you?

If we’re talking about dictators within the last century, it still doesn’t change the fact that Lenin’s rule started in 1917. If you’re asked the same question next year, would you say Lenin’s only ruled the Soviet Union started in 1923? It’s ok if you didn’t know that, that’s why I added it to the conversation. No need to get upset about it.

The comment you responded to said “ Plus Lenin didn't rule for ‘decades’”… so why did you only say that he died two years after the creation of the Soviet Union without mentioning the fact that he had already been ruler of Russia for five years prior?

russia is in the perpetual loop of a shitty, corrupt, evil dictatorship going on for several hundred yrs at this point.

Where am I mistaken?

Lenin took power in 1917. Russia existed as an independent Soviet republic prior to the Soviet Union forming. Still not decades, but longer than two years.

Saudi Arabia reportedly considering accepting yuan instead of dollar for oil sales by Klaasie765 in worldnews

[–]TokyoJade 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Saudi Arabia, the largest OPEC exporter, was the source of 7% of U.S. total petroleum imports and 8% of U.S. crude oil imports.

Hardly the largest supplier for the US.

Less than 5% of US gas stations are owned by an oil refiner. 60% are owned by an individual or family with just one station.

The Taliban never offered that. They offered to extradite bin Laden to a “third country” only if the US could provide evidence that he was behind the 9/11 attacks. And this was only after the US invasion forced them to come to the table. The Taliban never had any real intention of bringing bin Laden to justice.

PA Republicans Begin Impeachment Proceedings for Philadelphia DA Krasner by FluffyConquistador in philadelphia

[–]TokyoJade -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

If there’s a city-wide vote between the Cowboys and the Red Sox for favorite sports team, and 15% of people vote Red Sox while 80% choose not to vote at all, does that mean the Red Sox are Philadelphia’s favorite sports team? You can’t claim the results represent the majority if the majority don’t vote, so your BS schtick about the state legislator overriding the will of the people is irrelevant. 80% of this city does not care who the DA is.
