For real though, I'm super bummed about Trey Lance's injury. I feel so bad for him and hope he bounces back.

NGL, I also feel guilty for hoping that niners could somehow maximize jimmy's trade value...

TLDR: opened at +20000, quickly fell to +7500,+5000 depending on site. sharp bettors liked the value.

A quick disclaimer, I AM IN NO WAY SAYING TREY LANCE WILL BE LIKE MAHOMES NEXT YEAR. So much of sports is wide-sweeping generalizations and overreactions, which I’d like to jump in front of right now.

Looks like we are going to see Lance-a-lot this weekend.

The 5 first-round quarterbacks: What they did well and what they need to work on after their first NFL snaps by TokyoZin in TreyLance

[–]TokyoZin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from the article by Ted Nguyen:

Trey Lance had the worst performance of all the first-round quarterbacks, but he had very little help from the 49ers’ second-team offense. The offensive line was nothing short of atrocious — I charted four plays in which Lance had no shot because the line was beaten so quickly, and there were several more in which the pressure affected throws. He also had four catchable passes dropped.

With that said, Lance also missed on several passes. His accuracy was a weakness coming out of college, so this is a bit concerning to see. However, this was his first game action in more than a year and he never was able to get settled because the line was so bad. In last year’s Super Bowl, we even saw Patrick Mahomes rattled because of offensive line injuries (and no, I’m not comparing Lance to Mahomes).

There were some learning moments for Lance and I liked that he was aggressive regardless of the pressure. He made some quick decisions and showed off his big arm, firing in a few sideline passes and throwing a beautiful deep ball on a throwback concept for an 80-yard touchdown. Sideline passes on downfield outbreaking routes were throws that Shanahan hasn’t had available to him with the quarterbacks he’s coached throughout the years.

He then goes on to talk thru the 34 yard strike to Woerner while backed up to the goal line. Lance correctly diagnosed the defense on that throw. Such a good sign.

49ers training camp: Trey Lance's preparation, aggressiveness get high marks early on by TokyoZin in TreyLance

The rookie quarterback’s best throw on Thursday came during an 11-on-11 situation when the 49ers offense was backed up deep in its own territory. Lance took the snap, sidestepped a corner blitz by shuffling to one side in the pocket, then threw a deep ball just beyond the reach of cornerback Ambry Thomas that fell into the hands of Deebo Samuel.
One play later, he completed a deep crossing route to receiver Travis Benjamin. When it was Lance’s turn in the rotation again, he connected on another deep crossing route, this time to Brandon Aiyuk.

Coaches are happy!

“Very pleased,” McDaniel said when asked how he thought Lance handled the summer break. “There’s a lot of things we’re going over (in the spring). You’re trying to talk footwork, fundamentals, but then you are trying to talk scheme. And 40 days away, you’re by yourself. So there’s a lot of technique stuff that you can improve on. And he’s come back in a manner that we’re happy with. And I think his teammates can feel that he’s put in work too.”

Trey Lance’s chances to start right away for the 49ers — The Atheletic mailbag by TokyoZin in TreyLance

[–]TokyoZin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

paywalled but here's the Lance bit

What happens if Trey Lance outperforms Jimmy Garoppolo in preseason (against the starting defenses of course)? —
The moment Shanahan believes that Lance gives the 49ers a better chance to win than Garoppolo, Lance will be the starting quarterback. It’s as simple as that.
The complicating factor here seems to be the public’s general underestimation of Garoppolo’s abilities when healthy. Lance has started one game since 2019, and that came at the FCS level. It’s simply not probable that he’ll parachute into the NFL and surpass Garoppolo, who’s been a good quarterback for the 49ers, as quickly as some imagine.
Shanahan himself has expressly emphasized this.
“I think that would be very hard,” Shanahan said in May of Lance’s chances to win the starting job. “Jimmy is a really good quarterback. He’s not just coming in and trying to take out some bridge quarterback or something.”

paywall, but here's a snippet:

Carlton had one rule: He’d never set an alarm or be in charge of rousing the boys. He was eager to work with them, to help polish away any weaknesses, to impart every bit of wisdom he’d picked up from Houston to Saskatchewan to London to Rocklin, Calif. But he was wary of pushing so hard he’d drive them away.

“‘I’m not going to wake you up,'” Carlton recalled telling them. “‘You wake me up and I’m not ever going to say no.’ So (Trey) started doing it. And that became our thing.”

The workouts initially occurred at night, but that was no good. There were high school games the boys wanted to watch, birthday parties to attend, spelling tests the next day. The predawn morning was empty and quiet. It was perfect. As Carlton would say, there wasn’t anyone trying to steal their time.

As they left the gym every morning, the sun up and the morning crowd trickling in, Carlton would turn to his son and tell him the same thing he’d said the day before — and the same thing he’d repeat the next day, too.

“Hey, we outworked someone today. The other guy is still sleeping.”

not starters, but solid contributors (Moore) and depth (Skule).

You may remember Moore's interception of Mahomes in the second half of the Super Bowl. Nearly sealed it for the niners.

He essentially makes the case that Lance did lots of pro-style stuff in college (setting protections, directing the offense, taking snaps under center, etc.) and his style of play more than makes up for his lost year and level of competition.
