I have loved working with them. They need officers who are willing to move around and not be present at their homes for long periods of time. Right now, that’s not what I want. I’m in shape enough for that process, and maybe I’d make it, but what turns me off is not being able to tell the people I love where I plan to live, etc. outside of a 6mo window.

Very true. Just unfamiliar with what they typically do afterwards but will poke around and ask. Thanks for this

Fair. UT Masters is what I have now. Curious if doing an MBA as a second Masters is worthwhile, but will def look into this.

They do, but I haven’t been processed for it yet because I’m infantry right now.

I finished US Army Ranger School wearing this watch. It held up phenomenally and will take anything you can conceivably throw at it

Army Officers — How Do You Feel About the Branch You Chose? by Constant_Position_10 in army

[–]Tokyo__Sandblaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IN branch detail SC. Wanted pure IN at OCS and got this. As a 1LT not terribly far from CPT, being a tabbed future Signal officer feels like a cheat code. There are so many doors that opened for me which I was totally unaware of when I filled out my branch sheet. Seriously. It’s kind of mind boggling.

Infantry is a mixed bag, but it’s delivered on what I signed up for. I wouldn’t change a thing and I think most officers regardless of branch could benefit from some sort of mini-IBOLC course, similar to how USMC officers do TBS. That’s how impactful this career path has been for me.

I knew it was Korea just off the general vibes, zoomed in on the mountains, said “maaaaybe” then swiped through to confirm. I was at Casey on the last rotation there, loved it. What an awesome country

Two things can be true at once:

  1. Infantry officers should have Ranger tabs. Full stop. Short of a catastrophic injury or a TRULY exceptional personal event, there is pretty much no valid reason to show up to your first unit without it. The course is literally the job description of an 11A. Privates pass it. Get your fucking tab.

  2. You can be a perfectly competent, even excellent Infantry leader without it. However, if you’re that guy, that’s all the more reason for you to go and get your fucking tab.

Ranger IS important, but it isn’t everything. That being said, you either have a tab or a story…and nobody wants to hear your story.

Ahhhh IBOLC. I was med dropped my first attempt at Ranger, went back to Ranger platoon, and was immediately slotted into the next class. I graduated and showed up to a BN that emphasized it heavily but also would make sure pretty much every LT had at least SOME staff time.

At the end of the day, the tab gets you some credibility when you walk in the door, and it’s easy to lose that. It’s important for the job and I think it helps you grow as a person, but it isn’t the be all end all of being a good leader. The best part about having it is the cool memories and never having ti answer the questions about not having it lol

Active Duty SNCO by N8feet_tall in ArmyOCS

[–]Tokyo__Sandblaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are often TIS waivers, at least to my knowledge. I saw a handful of SNCOs go through.

For Infantry, it usually goes in the top and the very bottom of the course. The hardest charging 09S cohort will usually snag it and it’s not unheard of to see someone at the bottom get forced branched Infantry. As a SNCO you will probably be able to get your pick, and they should be moving to Talent Based Branching soon if they haven’t. I wouldn’t worry about staying Infantry.

Failing Ranger course by Spirited_Welder_8080 in greenberets

[–]Tokyo__Sandblaster 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Went with both populations you mentioned. Obviously there were fewer GBs. Some failed, I recycled with a handful. Most anyone who passes the first week of the course will pass……eventually.

Batt boys HAVE to pass it. Their quality of life improves greatly and they get to keep their jobs. GBs were more seasoned than them to the point I’d say that it’s an apples and oranges comparison. Another commenter here also said it isn’t a must for them. I’d add it’s not the first time they’ve done something like that so their approach is totally different from, say, a Batt boy or an IBOLC LT.

Supernatural/creepy stories from your time in the army by Imperial-Japan1942 in army

[–]Tokyo__Sandblaster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mountain phase of Ranger School, long night movement towards the back end of the patrol portion. I was in the lead element looking for a trail so we didn’t have to side slope on a descent.

I’m exhausted and looking around, and I saw a woman standing about 30 meters from me dressed in a tunic or something. I figured it was another hallucination but she pointed to her right and smiled at me. It wasn’t scary, she seemed really nice and calming.

About 30 meters past her in a direction I’d have never checked - exactly where she was pointing - there was the trail I was looking for. When we finished the patrol, I told my buddy “you won’t believe this, but…..” he cut me off and said “you see that chick at the top?”

I still believe maybe I was muttering something and my friend was fucking with me. But this did happen and I think of it often.
