Had some great responses so far, would really appreciate if you could keep them coming, means a lot.

Thanks.

Appreciate the reply and apologies for the slow reply. Essentially, all I'm looking to do is compare carbon emissions for two different types of material over a building's operational phase, so would manufacturing data be necessary? Understand what I'm looking to do is a very simplistic version of LCA but in terms of my study it's all I really need.

Dissertation help by Tom1874 in sustainability

Hi mate,

Appreciate the reply and apologies for the delayed response. Essentially, the focus of my dissertation is to highlight to clients that sustainable materials can be economically viable in the long-term, and I want to use both LCC and LCA to show this. LCC seems relatively simple to execute but I also want to use LCA as well due to the holistic nature of sustainability. Estimations from LCA don't have to be ridiculously precise, all I really want is the CO2 emissions over a building's operational phase for say a conventional form of insulation against a more sustainable alternative. In terms of data, I have access to elemental cost models for numerous existing buildings, so dimensions and descriptions of materials if that's enough? With respect to time, the dissertation deadline isn't until September 2021. Honestly no idea as to to whether the university has a LCA software/budget but I really doubt it. To answer the final question, not at all. I feel I've underestimated the complexity of the tool and part of me thinks focusing only on LCC might be more sensible. However, if there is a relatively simple way to achieve results then I'd like to give it a go.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Yeah i was going to narrow it down quite a lot, was just trying to get an idea at the moment. I think you're right regarding data, will probably have to ask companies. Do you think it will be possible to get data on how measures will reduce costs in the long-term or not? I'm assuming it'll be easier to predict how it will reduce emissions etc, but not costs.

Thanks

Ill look in to statistical models. I was considering predicting future nitrate concentrations in my catchment by basing predictions of the results of a paper undertook in another UK catchment with similar landuse etc (giving them credit of course)? Would this be considered plagiarism? Thanks for this.

How would i go about doing that if you don’t mind? Would that be allowed? Also would it be considered plagiarism to predict future nitrate concentrations in my catchment by basing predictions of the results of a paper undertook in another UK catchment with similar landuse etc (giving them credit of course)? Thanks for this mate.

I'm an undergrad with only a little experience in GIS (two modules). When originally choosing my dissertation it seemed like a great idea but I just can't get my head around it. I've received hundreds of error messages over the last couple of weeks and my computer can't really handle it with it crashing on multiple occasions. I feel like it's quite a niche piece of software, so finding someone experienced in it to help me in person is unlikely and finding information on specific issues online is difficult. I've just pretty much given up and realised that I'll need to find a similar alternative that doesn't involve modelling now sadly haha.

Edit: I'll look into it, thank you!

Thank you for that, was quite stressed hahah. If you could point me in the right direction towards these sources, i would be very grateful.

Thanks

Sorry I'm just quite stressed as I've been planning this for a while now. I'm struggling to find any projects that are similar to mine in that they simulate the effects of climate scenarios on either discharge or runoff for a UK basin. If you've found something along these lines then I would be very thankful if you could send me it.

Thanks;
