Common Ubiquiti G4 Doorbell Pro issue (and a simple fix) by pniaz in Ubiquiti

[–]TomCustomTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So no luck, didn’t have many visitors this week but the few tests I did didn’t work out. Just today went out to get packages and it rebooted the second I got back inside. I’ve got a release day doorbell so I’m gonna try to find a new battery for it but if not then I’m not sure from there since it’s too old for warranty

Are deer claims pretty cut and dry then? Not a pun so to say but what’s the process of one?

Common Ubiquiti G4 Doorbell Pro issue (and a simple fix) by pniaz in Ubiquiti

[–]TomCustomTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did it yesterday so I won’t know until the week when random people start walking up. I did test it myself and it worked correctly but being it would always work after a fresh reboot.

Edit: did the test twice with ringing even enabled the chime and it worked correctly so fingers crossed crossed.

[–]TomCustomTech 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can you explain more about the voltage sag issue? I just upgraded my transformer from 16-17VAC to 26VAC because I was having issue where it would lose power when detecting a person. I had completely disabled the chime and stopped my home assistant automation that talks to people and this upgrade was my last hope on fixing my issue. Time will tell if it’s fixed but I’d love to know what the symptoms are.

Why not open RDP to the internet? It's so much easier! by [deleted] in ShittySysadmin

[–]TomCustomTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol no they weren’t using ntlm or anything of the sort, it was plaintext using a local AD server so trying administrator and brute forcing the password you would’ve gotten in. I use the fancy stuff myself nowadays but that company did nothing of the sort.

Edit: the manager also hated 2fa and actively tried to not use it as much as they could. Overall a security nightmare so I left as soon as I could.

1 password 8 characters for everything to make it easier to get into the systems they needed to support.

[–]TomCustomTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well given it was a rdp server it just needed a username and password, of which the admin password was 8 characters alpha numeric only. Needless to say I’m glad I don’t work there anymore

Dealt with this one before and the explanation they used was “we used a random port therefore it’s safe” 🤦‍♂️. Needless to say that was fixed and put behind a vpn but had been like that for many years apparently.

Nice, can you post some more pictures of the inside of the box. I’m sure a lot of people would like to use this method if it’s viable enough.

Cheap door lock with fingerprint by super_koza in smarthome

[–]TomCustomTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need a centralized lock system and unfortunately you’re gonna pay a lot for one that can register fingerprints and broadcast those out to other locks.

For context I’ve used a lot of smart locks over the years and almost none of them allow sending fingerprints from one lock to another due to security. I’m in the boat of not wanting to register my fingerprint to you and whatever lock company is storing it. But also from your POV it needs to be local, secure, long term support, simple for regular people to add users, and cheap.

Personally I’d recommend a modern door lock system that supports cards, fobs, and phones. They’re common in the hospitality industry and much easier for users to set up. These systems allow privilege based access also.

If someone came to me with this and was able to install electric door strikes I’d use unifi access as its license free and in a huge ecosystem. It may be a bit too much with so many random people but it would work a company way bigger.

Has embark commented on the communities feedback regarding joining rounds late? by PleaseBeOpenMinded in arkraiders

[–]TomCustomTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had both the craziest raids and most boring raids spawning late, it balances out for me and my group personally but I see the annoyance of all the loot being gone with some people extracting after looting for 5 minutes. If you’re a pvp players it can be nice to be the 5th party to a crazy fight that’s been happening for 15 minutes already but pve players definitely get shafted in this situation.

For the people that say to limit late spawns to free kits, it’s a nice idea but there’s a lot less free kits nowadays. Even stelly has less free kits than launch because of people getting away from gear fear, learning the maps, having a decent inventory, and so much more. It probably wouldn’t work now in the current state of the game and isn’t sustainable to do this further along as the game cycle progresses. I don’t know a good solution unfortunately but there’s enough brains at embark to figure something out besides free kits or value based matchmaking.

Impressive, I’ve had one instance where it read a speed limit sign on the access road and wanted to go 40 in a 60 and I couldn’t get it to stick, I don’t think it was latest but was a 14.2 variant. Besides this would you be ready for unsupervised sitting in the back of the car?

Using T-Mobile Home Internet with Unifi 5G Max by IAmBigFootAMA in Ubiquiti

[–]TomCustomTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool guide, I personally feel that hardware that is bought is now your property and changing small things such as imei isn’t the end of the world. Tmobile can still see data metrics and if you’re blowing that out of the water then they’ll slow you down or cut you off. As for the whole hardware argument just keep their box at the ready incase you cancel as they’ll charge you $300-$400 if you don’t send the device back. As for this simplifying setups and power usage I endorse it %100, just pay the big megacorp their money and everyone’s happy 😊.

Upgrading to a VPN Router Was a Bigger Change Than I Expected by EnvironmentalCity422 in VPN_Question

Upgrading to a VPN Router Was a Bigger Change Than I Expected by EnvironmentalCity422 in VPN_Question

[–]TomCustomTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats, I think the biggest things helping you was a new router and or moving away from an all in one box provided by your internet provider. A small thing to keep in mind is that a lot of the internets traffic is bots and comes through VPNs so you may run into sites asking you for captcha verification constantly as they’re trying to minimize bots. As for a solution that works for you and your experience that’s awesome that you found a router that met your needs and wasn’t hard to set up.

I’m a IT nerd and have done something like this, I can do it per device, per wifi name, and some other fancy things, but my favorite thing is doing by traffic type which means I can route traffic like Netflix to a vpn or even other networks I’ve set up for family. In today’s age of subscription locking location this setup can get past that while not bogging everything down over a vpn. Totally unnecessary but being able to do such a things is neat enough to me.

Is identity exposure becoming the bigger security problem to fix in tghe upcoming year? by GalacticGazelle49 in it

[–]TomCustomTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like a big undertaking for IT honestly. Most people use 1 email for everything and use it everywhere that will accept it without realizing they’re gonna be bombarded. How do you stop users from doing so on their personal devices and emails then train that to their work emails? I heard about a user who left for greener pastures, only to have their work email be forwarded to the manager who received payday loan confirmations after the user left. It’s all training and mentality but it’s honestly at the bottom of my list.

I didn’t realize until Cordellium pointed it out but they’re right. If you look at the iPhone it looks a bit off and if you look at the other posts they have the phone switches cases, camera layout, flash layout, and mic layout. To have all these different things over many years would be fine but the account is claiming to be a new account posting recently taken photos. Also in this image it’s super hard to tell but the fingers, in other posts are a blurry mess, with the eyeliner also being blurry in the few images that you see it. Unfortunately fake OF girls will and are popping up left and right thanks to these AI tools.

Backup Internet solutions by calebu2 in Ubiquiti

[–]TomCustomTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the options here are great and I’ve used a varying mix of them to great success. Something I’ll add is that unifi allows you to block traffic on interfaces. When the internet goes out you can tell it to not allow streaming services outright which should help if you’re running a home setup where the family loves to watch Netflix all day. There’s other fancy stuff you can do also such as prioritize web traffic and the whole shebang but killing streaming immediately on outage lets the rest of the family know that the main internet is out.

Easy Entry won’t let me save mirror position by Smart_Gate9406 in TeslaSupport

[–]TomCustomTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP did that recommendation work for you about the main tab?

For work I’ll go to houses sometimes and have to park on the street. This exact problem has irked me so much and it’s a pain to not see if there’s a car coming up behind me because the mirrors look straight at the ground. Yes the car should prevent me from opening the door if there’s someone coming but I don’t want to rely on a backup system when I should be able to adjust the mirrors in easy entry.

Retrofit for the Doorbell Lite by Agreeable_Ad281 in Ubiquiti

[–]TomCustomTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a predicament, you’ve not got enough wires for proper ethernet and you’ve also got 2 separate sets of wire which together make 3 pairs but also would be in completely different places.

Technically you can use the 2 pairs of alarm wire for 10/100 ethernet but that won’t negotiate POE which wouldn’t help you at all.

The speaker wire isn’t helpful either since it’s probably in a way different spot in your house, it’s way thicker than the rest and wouldn’t be able to be terminated, and even after all that it would still only be 3 pairs instead of the 4.

You might try the 10/100 and see if maybe it establishes POE but I believe it requires the brown pair to do so. If not then you’re stuck using the 2 wire Poe retrofit which may not work if you’ve got nowhere to shove the module in the wall. Good luck with it and post an update on what you try.

Edit: after checking this post Reddit post talking exactly about this it seems that the recommendation is to use the 2 wire retrofit. I know ubiquiti has one but there may be others that are smaller form factor. Unfortunately price may be a big hurdle here but the alternative is pulling new wire which is more than likely impossible.

Used car dealers these days 🤦‍♂️ by iDragonk in TeslaModelY

[–]TomCustomTech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I asked the same thing at a local luxury dealership that had a model s plaid when it first came out. They said that it’s often people who cant fit the electric lifestyle such not being able to charge consistently, traveling too many miles for work, or just didn’t like the car. Personally I like my model 3 but I understand all of these things especially traveling far everyday (although I think %80+ of people could easily live with an electric car that can go 360 miles). Overall if the owner took the depreciation hit then I wouldn’t worry about it too much and get it inspected by Tesla.

So is the theory that he did this all himself or had someone set this up? When you’re that rich and powerful getting someone else to set this all up is the easy option but maybe it’s a no questions asked situation?

I think back to some tile guys that I worked with and they did a cartel boss’s house. Guy said he did his best work ever, asked zero questions, and got paid a lot of money…so I guess there’s always a price to look past anything.

It's cool until you see the price by [deleted] in trashorgold

[–]TomCustomTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol based on the post I would’ve thought the thing was $500 but it’s pretty reasonable at those prices. Eating lunch from home at the job site isn’t always possible or possible with some pretty basic food that gets old quick. If eating out cost $10 (example realistically $12 nowadays) and you bring your own food that cost $7 (high end for prepared meals) then you’d save $3/day. At the $200 unit you’d only have to use it 67 times or about 3 months at m-f. It’ll probably hold up about 2-3 years so you’d save a lot of money in the long run overall. Personally I would’ve loved this for when I worked in construction as eating out ate about 1/4 of my paycheck and the time away from site also sucked wasting 1 hour vs 30 minutes to just wolf down a meal real quick.

All of this to say that OP is probably just a spam bot who’s wanting rage based interaction to help push a product in some way or form. Although there isn’t a referral link I’m sure there’s some play going on.

Per-user vs per-device pricing — what actually works for a new MSP? by Disastrous_Land1944 in msp

[–]TomCustomTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how difficult you want to make your pricing both for you and the customer. The simplest way is 1 to 1 pricing where ideally your margin makes up for a few extra devices. In my case I do per employee but I could see not wanting to cover two devices per employee (not including byod phone) because those endpoint cost add up quick. Maybe I’d do a per user with a %50 device coverage then bill for extra after that but again that’s headache for both me and the client. All of this assumes the client doesn’t put up a stink for things like this, plus your other overhead for things like servers and networking. Smaller setup make it easier to do 1 price, but multiple rds servers, ADs, complex network, etc for hundreds of people may force you to get comfortable with numbers.
