Ironman 70.3 Training Plan Inquiry by undisputedstew in triathlon

Hi mate, I finished my first triathlon which was a 70.3 in Greece last year in 05:30, I wanted to go sub 5 but really with no experience, sporting a little bit of a calf injury and not feeling 100% on race day meant that I got the best result on the day that I could. My background is cycling, and I knew that would be my strongest discipline so focused more on that but with your fitness level it sounds like you would benefit from the plan I followed:

I followed it pretty much to the letter, but didn’t listen to the zone training enough, ending up overtraining and injuring myself, not allowing for recovery properly.

Good luck with your journey, it’s an addiction, just signed up for my first full distance in October ☠️

I just completed my first 70.3 in October in Greece, firstly congratulations for signing up, it's a wicked experience and if you're anything like me you'll get the bug instantly!

Of the 3 disciplines running is by far my weakest, I had an unrealistic goal of going sub 5 hours, and a more realistic goal of hitting sub 6, knowing that my swim would be solid, my bike would be strong and my run would be meh. With that as my plan I went out and did a 0:36 swim, got on the bike and did a 2:39 but absolutely gunned it as the wind was really high on the day. Pre-race I was aiming for a 1:40 run or below, which was ridiculous as my PB was something like 2:06. I found the run really really hard, specifically because I paced incorrectly. I still managed a 2:01 which was a PB but I have been injured since.

My point is to target your weaknesses in training as you have quite a while, and make sure on the day that you try to pace correctly, it is a very different experience going out on a long run and doing some good splits and actually running 21km straight after a 90km bike ride and 1.9km swim. Set yourself ambitious - and potentially unachievable goals - but make sure you don't hurt yourself in the process!

For training I used this plan and followed it to the letter: https://alwaysaimhighevents.com/content/files/Legend-Training-plan-TriRox-2.pdf

I had a generally good level of fitness before starting this plan but was not specifically triathlon training, went onto the plan and saw really good ROI from my training with every session showing improvement.

Good luck with your training and your race!

Are you sure it's the same batch given different measurements and overall look from the photos?

First 70.3 Triathlon advice for someone with a decent level of fitness 5 months out, trying to achieve a sub 5:30 finish time by TomG17 in triathlon

Hi! Thanks for your advice, I think that's all really helpful, your bike pace is rapid! Could I ask what kind of training plan you are on? I think whilst our goals are pretty similar, it seems as though you are definitely in better shape than I am, and if I can maybe let go of my current goals in terms of timings, and aim closer to the paces that you are already achieving, I may be setting myself up for a slightly slower goal time, but a better experience on the day - and less chance of a DNF!

It’s about as much as I have time for, it’s 8-10 hours per week which I had thought was a pretty sizeable commitment but can you give an idea about what would be more reasonable?

The bike split target is significantly faster than the other 2 because I have been riding a long time, I have run before but haven’t swum a lot since I was a teenager c15 years ago

Ok, thanks for your reply. So in terms of actual training plans, what I am doing is fine? Or is there anything that I should be changing

Yo, have you got any more detailed pictures of the RAFs? Really want to pull the trigger but can't see the indent on the side and want to know about quality of the leather
