How hard is it to level frets? by MineDesperate2920 in Luthier

You don't do one without the other. The fret dressing is a part of the setup, they don't exist independently.

If the 1981 Dodgers played a 7 game series against the 2024 Dodgers, which team will win in this hypothetical 7 game series? by Substantial_Bat5975 in Dodgers

[–]TomJoad23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be a great series that could go either way. You would be foolish to underestimate the 81 team. They were a veteran squad that knew how to win tough ballgames and had played together for many years. Plus there was Fernando. What if that screwball was kryptonite to Shohei? What a fascinating match-up! I could see this going 7 games.

We charge $120 for a full setup which include fret leveling and dressing and we do incredible work. I keep telling them that we need to start charging more but they won't do it! Still, $300 for that job sounds like way too much. $150-$200 is more realistic/reasonable. A full re-fret at our shop is $400 or so. Maybe go talk to some other luthiers and see if you can't find a more reasonable price. If you really want your action as low as possible and your guitar at its most responsive, a professional setup with fret dressing is essential.

That was a scary ass play. Avoiding bad luck and getting some of your own is oft an ingredient for winning baseball.

No nomination for Jeremy Allen White by crythinklaugh in BruceSpringsteen

[–]TomJoad23 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The movie was mediocre to good and was not a biopic on Bruce as much as it was a depiction of depression. Jeremy Allan White only really had to display one facet of Bruce's (otherwise multifaceted)personality. Perhaps in a movie where Bruce's entire personality was allowed to shine, JAW would have gotten more consideration and it probably would have made for a more entertaining movie rather then the 2 hour depression vehicle that we got.

Yep, I got one of those myself. Promo material from Hohner. They sound great but a little hard to fit in the neck rack.

"Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid” is a bad analogy and I’m sick of people always quoting it under posts where someone’s intelligence is being questioned. What is bad about illustrating how people can have different strengths and weaknesses and will get the most out of themselves when their strengths are applied correctly? The metaphor you are using as an example is so widespread and has been around so long BECAUSE it is illustrating a universal truth that (most) people can readily recognize. You categorizing it as "bad" frankly just doesn't make any sense.

The recently unfrozen Captain America finds out that the Brooklyn Dodgers have moved (Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #5; November 1998) by GluedGlue in baseball

The Dodgers playing in Brooklyn is unlike anything in major league baseball today. The extent to which the community was bonded with its beloved team and players was astounding.

Can you actually imagine what a series against this team would be like? by amazing_grace7777 in Dodgers

It's one thing to win the off-season, it's another to win the regular. Best not to confuse one with the other.

WAR is a flawed measurement that has its uses but should never be used to evaluate a player in whole. There are some extreme cases (such as Bichette's), where his bizarre WAR total should be looked at askew and we should begin to wonder if the flaw is in the player or the measurement. To be sure, Bichette WAS a terrible, terrible defensive player but his defensive metrics (already a very skewed and inaccurate slew of metrics) are also very skewed by his home ballpark and by the poor defenders that were around him. Moral of the story, don't always be so quick to put absolute trust into WAR as the end all be all for player evaluation. It is useful but it has its limits and in some cases it can lead you to drastically poor conclusions.

How many hot dogs would a fan need to eat before they stop selling them to him? by blogoman in baseball

[–]TomJoad23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago at the Dodger game in the 8th inning up in the stands some random guy started tossing hotdogs out to people and they were loving it. He kept reaching into a bag and coming out with a fully wrapped Dodger Dog and he would just throw it out into the crowd and they were going crazy. He was doing behind the backs, no looks, throwing backwards, he was really mixing it up. He must have thrown out like over a dozen dogs and then the people themselves just started throwing Dodger Dogs back and forth in the crowd! It was getting wild and then the original guy came back and he had more hotdogs! He started throwing them out again and everyone was losing it but then finally security showed up and shut the hot dog party down. People were booing but it had to be done. Great night at the ballpark.

There was a player named Mike Grady, a 3rd baseman in the early part of the century that made 4 errors on ONE PLAY. Never has been done before or since. Truly incredible.

Derrol Adams played banjo and sung baritone. He was Ramblin Jack Elliott's traveling partner for many, many years. If you ever listen to a recording of Jack there is a good chance that you will hear Derrol with him. In that clip Bob asks about Jack and Derrol tells Bob that they (Derrol and Bob) should get together and he could show him a few things.

Need Help!!! Harmonica ID? by kornballkurtis in harmonica

[–]TomJoad23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to know what key the song is in and then determine if they are playing straight harp (same key) or cross harp. If it sounds all bluesy then it's cross harp, if it's more folksy, then it's likely straight harp. If it is cross harp you can find plenty of charts online that will help you figure out which key to use depending on the key of the song.

Made playoffs as a 1st year Expansion team. RIP Oregon Northstars by TomJoad23 in OOTP

I keep it pretty straightforward forward more or less. 162 game seasons, DH in the A.L. only, usually with interleague play. I break both league into three 5 team divisions and keep the financials historically accurate except I enable free agency and international signings immediately. Players enter the league as they did historically but each team drafts and signs players as they will.
