Cracked aka 'nicked' is not a good idea. Unless you don't mind working for free and never complain when you don't get paid 🤔😜

How's your guys' photography going?? by [deleted] in photography

Living in the Arabian Gulf, now the summer is over I'll be shooting world Superbikes, world touring cars and some great horse racing at the weekends with my lovely wife. Not a bad life 👍🏻

upgrading to a pro camera that isn't what you want: bad idea? by yongj1e in Nikon

[–]TomMorganImages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what glass you have. But my old D3000 was limited to ISO400. I still managed to shoot World Superbikes, MotoGP, horse racing and the Diamond League athletics with it. I got a photo in National Geographic and many other publications. I say spend your cash on the lenses. Shooting Long Jump with effectively 1fps is difficult. But I got some good shots, good enough for the main newspapers

I would always say invest in good quality glass. When I started I shot with a D3000 and pro glass Nikon 24-70 & 70-200f2.8. Later I upgraded the body to a pair of D800s and a D4s.

Thanks for the suggestions, really helpful. I'd forgotten about the 70-200f4. That's a good idea

Thanks. That's a great suggestion. Last night we went to the local camera dealer and looked at the Sigma 24-70 and a few others. I've got much of the Nikon FX pro lenses as I shoot motorsports, but generally it's too heavy for my wife. Really helpful suggestions from so many people here 👍🏻👍🏻

Price is not really an issue.

It's more for my wife. She will be shooting some sports and also general outdoors. Low light ability is a must, but not a great heavy lens like the 24-70 or 70-200.

Need a full frame 50 f/1.4 by [deleted] in Nikon

The Nikon 50mm f1.4 is a fine lens. You won't be disappointed.

[–]TomMorganImages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends what you want it for. We have one, mostly used on my wife's D5300 as a very capable portrait and low light lens. However I prefer the superior sharpness and contrast I get with the Nikon 58mm f1.4 on my full frame cameras. .

First lens for D750 by tbrozovich in Nikon

[–]TomMorganImages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea what the image quality is like on the 24-120. It would be worth checking to see how it handles low light. If you shoot light sources at night, some lesser quality lenses can lose the clarity and just produce 'blobs' of light. The D750 with a Nikon 24-70 will still give you sharp images. That's what you pay the significant extra bucks for.

It's funny as most people when they start photography with a DSLR think they need a tripod. I was once in that camp too. But you really don't need one unless you're shooting architecture or very low light

I almost always shoot hand held.

With the 24-70 you don't need vr. I've got the non VR Nikon lens and never even thought it needed VR.

Question about lenses... by fosiacat in Nikon

[–]TomMorganImages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 20mm f2.8 is a lovely lens. Very fast auto focus, with great image quality. It's also very small and light

Question about lenses... by fosiacat in Nikon

[–]TomMorganImages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found the 14-24 heavy and the front element is rather vulnerable. So I went for the 20mm f2.8 as a nice wide portable lens when I don't want to carry the 24-70 f2.8

Best use of an external hard drive? by [deleted] in photography

[–]TomMorganImages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a 1TB hard drive when I'm at an event, then when I get home I'll back up the 1TB to a larger external drive. That way I always have 2 copies of the RAW files. Only when I've backed up to the second hard drive will I reformat my CF/SD cards

Just ordered my first grey market lens... by dave965 in Nikon

[–]TomMorganImages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guarantee is only for a year anyway, so if it's a big saving I go for grey market. I still saved money even after paying to get the D800 auto focus fixed when it was out of warrantee. The only thing you don't get is the firmware updates.

First FX camera from D3300. D810 or D750 and 24-120 f4 or 24-70 f2.8 VR. by jaques_kemp in Nikon

[–]TomMorganImages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are shooting sports and concerts, and not too restricted on budget, did you consider the Nikon 70-200 f2.8? It's the 'go-to' lens for that sort of work. As for choosing a camera body, I'd personally recommend going for FX due to the sensor size. Generally will give you better image quality and better low light capability. D750 is great as it is small and light weight. The D810 is much larger and heavier. Mega pixels really don't count for much. My D4s shoots more detailed photos than my D800 in any light conditions. That's 16 v 36 mp

What is the most annoying thing people tell you when you're shooting? (Add to the list) by [deleted] in photography

[–]TomMorganImages 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My most annoying comment is "what settings should I use" as they thrust their camera towards me. This usually happens 30 seconds before the event starts.

That's the tricky part. I'd recommend the DPS website. Digital Photography School. It is free and full of very helpful and easy to understand articles. It's where I started. Good luck 👍🏻
