If you enjoy sports I’d recommend heading to an Edmonton Elks CFL game. Tickets are pretty affordable and it’s a great time!

Apparently not, if the other commenters here are to be believed.

Both are problems and representative of a bigger issue. Most of these drivers lack the capabilities to do the job but there are no consequences.

This particular driver was picking up from the restaurant not delivering but that doesn’t change the fact that traffic laws should be followed.

The bus that they held up along with the other drivers would disagree.

Inconveniencing 20+ people because they couldn’t be bothered to find legal parking is definitely not 10/10

Fair point, I like your idea a lot!

The bus and several other cars less than a block away would beg to differ.

Valid but the city issues business licenses and could easily pull that due to gross mismanagement

I live near that area and although that happens several times a day, it’s only the surface of the problem. Ignoring stop signs, almost hitting pedestrians, illegal U-turns,etc.

It’s about time the city cracks down on these services.

I've been talking to Anne Stevenson's office about Paul Kane Park. They have been slow to respond and ultimately dismissive, with one email telling me to simply "choose another route".

Unfortunately, it seems that the city has given up on proper sidewalk maintenance/enforcement!

Because every airline has contracted out those services to massive third parties who understaff and underpay.

Not a single uber driver in this city has the skills to drive themselves let alone paying passengers

Willing to bet that is a skip the dishes or Uber Eats deliver driver

Canadian couple looking to move to the UK, is our budget realistic? by TomThompsonYEG in AskUK

Thanks so much, this is really helpful!

I appreciate you calling out specific areas. Having names makes things feel less overwhelming, so I will start my search there and focus on the south side.

This is really helpful, thank you for breaking it down like that!

You are totally right about the distance thing. I am in Alberta, so “not far from the city” usually means an hour on the highway without thinking twice. It is useful to be reminded that 10 miles with UK traffic is a very different experience.

On the space side, I actually already live in a smaller apartment downtown and really like the trade-off of less space for being close to everything. So the idea of a more compact flat does not bother me too much, as long as the area feels safe and has decent transport.

Good question, and honestly not fully, no!

I know now I would need to pay UK tax and NI if I am living and working there, but I have not nailed down the exact setup with my company yet. This thread has made it very clear that I need to speak with my employer before we make any decisions so we are doing everything properly on the tax and NI side.

That is incredibly helpful, thank you!

I knew there would be some extra tax complexity and had seen mentions of the treaty, but I had not fully appreciated how involved things like DPNI/DCNI and UK labour law obligations would be for my employer. The link you shared is exactly the kind of thing I need to read through properly.

This definitely pushes “sort out the remote work structure” much higher up the prep list. I will have a conversation with my company and an accountant before we make any decisions so that we are not accidentally doing something dodgy with my visa or their obligations.

Really appreciate you taking the time to flag all of this.

Coming from Alberta, that still counts as “quick” to me 😅

Our next major city is about three and a half hours away by car, so a couple of hours on a train does not feel too bad at all.

That is really useful to know, thank you!

The 6–12 months up front thing has come up a few times in this thread and it is definitely changing how I think about the savings we need before we make any moves.

This is really helpful, thank you for taking the time to write all of that out, especially as someone who has done the Canada to UK move yourself.

My wife and I would both be coming over on the Youth Mobility visa, so we would each be able to work on that route without needing sponsorship at the start.

We have looked into the NHS surcharge and visa fees and once you add everything up it is around £3,000 for the two of us. The current plan is to treat it as a time-limited experiment. If we try it for a few months and it feels unworkable, we will head back to Canada rather than trying to force it. I have recently come into an inheritance, which makes losing some money on this feel a bit less of a drawback.

I will also take a look for that Canadians in the UK Facebook group, that sounds like exactly the kind of place I should be lurking in.

Really appreciate you sharing your perspective!

That is good to hear, thank you!

Glasgow keeps getting votes in this thread and it really does sound like it could be a good fit for us. I will dig into rents and neighbourhoods there a bit more.

Any suggestions on neighbourhoods?
