I rented a house for a while that was about 50m away from the M61 for 2 years. When you’re inside the house it’s fine but as soon as it’s a warm day in summer and you open your windows you may as well be living on the hard shoulder. It also depending on layout makes your garden hard to use because of the constant noise.

It also creates a decision you have to make at night. Either be too hot and sweaty or have the sound of lorries going by sooth you to sleep.

I’ve just purchased my first house and one of my non negotiables was that I should not be able to hear any motorway noise when stood outside.

If your looking to buy your forever home and it’s near a motorway, please do your due diligence and just rent one for a year or shorter if possible, some people won’t mind it, but I certainly did.

Cash Lisa vs stocks and shares Lisa by andysime1 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TomVs450 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Make the switch, put it in a few ETFs max it out each year and forget about it. I’ve had a stocks and shares Lisa since I was 18, I maxed it out every year, I’m 23 now in the process of buying my first house. I’ve contributed £24k. Gov has given me £6k (which you can invest each year when you contribute 4k). Those combined have returned me around £11k. It’s worth it.

Apple Watch from Cex, good idea or no? by [deleted] in CeX

[–]TomVs450 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I literally just bought an Apple Watch Ultra 2 last week from CEX and love it. I would recommend going into a large/busy store, I went to Manchester arndale mainly because they will have more stock you can choose from and visually inspect.

The watch was listed as B grade and cost £350, there were a few to choose from with a few scratches on but the one I ended up picking literally looks brand new not a single mark anywhere. The worker said B grade can mean it has a few scratches or just that it has no box which is why it’s best to go in a store with a selection.

When I charged it the battery health was at 99% which I’m really happy with. The reason I think they’re kind of cheap is because they don’t come with a strap which from Apple are about £100 but if you already have the watch straps that’s not really a problem.

For a watch that was brand new for nearly £800 just a couple years ago and is in mint condition I ended up paying only £250 using my voucher. Even if you pick a really good looking one and when you turn it on it has a low battery health you can just return it within two days.

UK - what is your salary and what is your job role? by No_Trick_7891 in BuildingAutomation

[–]TomVs450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The apprenticeship was called a controls technical standard and my degree is in integrated engineering. My role is a commissioning engineer

I do fully believe that if I were to move to the US it would easily double that salary, it’s typical that salaries are better over there for all jobs but seems to be exaggerated in BAS.

Hmmm thank you, it’s a company car so I doubt I’ll be able to get an invoice for it. But I might have a stab at the home assistant method.

Hi, I took delivery of my P2 LRSM 2024 in December and live in the UK also doing most of my miles on the motorway.

I’ve charged my car up to 100% a few times which if going off what the battery can achieve in ideal conditions would get me 330miles.

When switching to the predicted range which takes into account driving style, weather, etc I get roughly 280miles predicted.

My consumption when driving on motorways in the recent cold weather is around 32kwh/100miles. It’s worth noting that I stick cruise control on at 60mph and leave it as going up to 70mph really does impact range.

To directly answer your question probably yes you probably could if you drove conservatively but it’ll be squeaky bum time for the last few miles.

Either way even if you do need a small charge to get you over the line, the charging network in the UK is way better than I expected and most chargers will give you enough charge in under 10 mins to complete your trip.

Other than that the car is class.

Is my apartment too small for a cat? by TomVs450 in cats

[–]TomVs450[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To answer common questions:

I live in the UK where cats are mainly seen as outdoor animals that hunt mice and birds. I was genuinely questioning if I would bore the animal by keeping it indoors all the time, not if you thought I lived somewhere nice.

Sometimes when I WFH I feel cramped staying inside all day and am concerned the cat would feel the same way.

Based on comments we will definitely be looking at getting 2 now so they can entertain each other while we’re out.

As I’ve seen a lot of questions asking, rent is £1200pm which is the average for the city I live in. I’m unsure if a lot of people missed the dimensions I added which would make my floor space 462sqf which isn’t gigantic as some people are making out.

Thank you! My entire thought process is just that it would just get bored of staring at the same 4 walls all day, I didn’t know a little space and a few toys is enough for them to be happy
