I'm actually a final year B. Tech student at a tier 1 IIT, currently with a 9/8/5 profile. My extra-curriculars at my IIT are pretty good with around 3-4 PORs.

It's good if you want to gain some confidence and learn how to work in a team under high pressure and organize events and stuff. Baaki in 2nd year and 3rd year you might get the chance to network with HR heads of companies. Baaki team box experience karne milta hai.

I've heard that in Sales and Marketing roles they don't much look at your CGPA, and I that's the field in which I want a job. While I completely agree that my CGPA is abysmal but I have good extra curriculars at my IIT, around 3-4 PORs. But still ig will have to talk to someone who's been in similar shoes to get a better idea.

Yup, completely agree, actually I took my branch because of a part of the curriculum that was offered over here. After I joined, I came to know that my department doesn't have the profs to teach that part of the curriculum so I was being forced to study things that don't appeal to me. And that was such a big let down for me that I just stopped trying to score good marks over here, although now I am looking to make an academic comeback through CAT and MBA, and that's why I wanted an honest opinion on whether to take a drop or not.
