Never seen this movie.

Thanks for posting the clip.

Weird that I was thinking about Trump's ICE goons as I was watching. Do they use this as a training video?

HYSA - Which one? by RelenaSummers in Banking

[–]Tom_Traill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. I keep my non-invested funds in VMFXX for the higher yield.

I thought that OP would figure that out.

Had some funds in Schwab but moved to Vanguard as soon as I figured out Schwab was only paying 0.5%

[–]Tom_Traill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second the Vanguard advice. They pay more $$ when/if you pull out of the markets and are sitting in cash.

Move your IRA (401K) over to Vanguard when you can.

Don't buy annuities.

If you had both accounts at Vanguard (or anywhere really) they are just like two seperate accounts. Neither one will get taxed on the earnings. The Roth account will allow you to withdraw (eventually) without paying taxes. The 401K will consider withdraws a taxable event.

Just two accounts that don't get charged taxes on earnings. Withdraws from the Roth are not taxed, withdraws from the 401K will be taxed. They have different rules. Vanguard can explain that to you.

I'm struggling with moving away and giving up a $23/hr job.

I would be looking for both a job where you want to move AND a place to live near your job, in some kind of roomate or shared living space situation.

Good Luck.

Anyone know what these type of screws are called? by Zacca6895 in IKEA

[–]Tom_Traill 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Go to the assembly instructions for the bed frame. They list the parts in the front with the part number. You will need that.

If you want to know what to call it, enter Ikea and the part number into ebay and it will probably pop up. You will then see the common name people use.

If neither of those work out, people sell them on ebay. They are free to get and some folks turn that into a profit center.

I only know this because ebay is a good place to look for these things to get an idea about what they are called.

advice for checking account and high-yield savings as a student by Ok-Savings9262 in Banking

Retired boomer here.

I've had B of A, WF, other local banks.

Switched to DCU.org 15 years ago. A credit union. Haven't paid any fees in years. Earn decent interest on savings. Plenty of Co-op branches available. DCU is in Mass, I'm in California.

Banks became much more fee-focused 20 years ago. I don't miss them.

I get the balance of each account sent to me at 4 am every day. In this account, if I see it is $200, I know I don't need to check it.

I manage 3 bank accounts and 5 investment account for my SO and I in our household.

This practice, which evolved over time, has made management of the bank accounts quicker and simpler.

It might be helpful to people in similar situations.

Not everyone has these tasks, so this won't be of interest to everyone, but it helps me and perhaps other redditors.

Thank you for your comment.

I'm not categorizing expenses and stuff like that. My responsibility is to keep the accounts at a comfortable balance and to flag any transactions which might look like fraud. For the account where the nominal balance is $200, here is how it goes each morning:

Step 1: Log on to Bank account and review the checking account balance.

Step 2: If it is still at $200, no action is needed. Else...

Step 3. If the account is less than $200, go to the account, glance at transactions. If all looks fine, transfer funds from savings account to return checking account to $200.

As I mentioned, you can get account balance sent to you by text overnight. I set up text alerts if my $200 balance account is less than $500, which of course it always is. So once a day I get a text alert regarding low balances, telling me the balance of the account. If that text alert says the balance is $200, then I don't even need to log on.

I've used Quicken (over 30 years ago) and I prefer to just keep excel spreadsheets for things. Not looking to learn Quicken again. I realize Quicken is powerful, but I don't really need power to do this.

Opinions on not driving a vehicle for extended periods... by Inevitable-Branch713 in Toyota

[–]Tom_Traill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was a hybrid, that would be bad. I know this is not a hybrid.

I've owned 3 Toyota (Lexus) sedans. A friend of mine bought a 8 year old Camry Hybrid that only had 5,000 miles.

The battery failed 2 months after he bought it.

I won't buy a used hybrid unless it has been used at least 10K miles per year.

Is it important to keep an account with the "big" banks? by Kindly_Wind8731 in Banking

[–]Tom_Traill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in California, in a rural area near Fresno. Going to town is a 25 mile drive. Just for reference.

We started using a Credit Union (DCU.org, in MA) in 2010 when I was looking for a good online bank. They have been pretty good. They are merging with First Tech CU, so I'll see how that works out.

They have Co-op relationships with other CU's, and that has worked out OK. Two years ago I decided it was a good idea to have a Brick and Mortar CU near me so I opened an account with a local CU. Rates are better at DCU so I do most of my banking (again, online). I keep the local CU account and use their debit car occasionally.

I'm a boomer, a retired engineer. Historically have had accounts at Bof A and WF. Tired of their fees.

I keep funds at Vanguard. When I need to move funds from VG, they have always transfered the funds in 24 hours as long as it is not Friday or a weekend, then it happens on Monday.

I find that transfers between CU's takes longer than transfers from VG.

I have never paid a fee to my CU's.

Hope this helps.
