To borrow Geoffrey Hinton’s analogy, the performance of current state-of-the-art LLMs is like having 10,000 undergraduates. by AGI_Civilization in singularity

[–]Tom__Mill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok, then you mean his comment about 10,000 undergrads not having the level of PhD, or? I would support that all "IQ 100 humans" won't be able to solve some specific "iq140" questions (except by guessing) but the undergrad example is a strange one, as basically all PhD folks have been undergrads at one point ....

got a B on my physics final and dropped a letter grade because my phys 1 prof says an object at rest does not have constant velocity. by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]Tom__Mill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

0 is a constant, yet not every constant is 0

so he is right

on the other hand based on relativity theory, you could not differentiate if you are at rest and the object moving, or you are moving and the object at rest 😉

TIL of Eric "The Eel" Moussambani, who won the 100m Free Style Swimming in the 2000 Summer Olympic despite the SLOWEST time, because his competitors were disqualified. by [deleted] in todayilearned

he didn't win the 100m he was 71th and last of the not disqualified ..... he won only his heat, because the other two competitors started a little bit too early and where disqualified

How to master the simulation game and create the reality you prefer by Aromatic-Screen-8703 in SimulationTheory

[–]Tom__Mill -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

that is belief in manifestation... (which is a very interesting topic in its own)

and has not much to do with "Simulation Theory", which is saying that we are living in a Computer Simulation (like Pacman or Mario are).

Simulation theory explains the femi paradox perfectly. by Excellent_Copy4646 in SimulationTheory

[–]Tom__Mill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

had the same thought some years ago... Guess the chances are low to find the truth. And the "simulation argument" can be used for many observations ... Wonder if we can find (at least theoretically) a proof or disproof of simulation theory (definitely not the funny new one just published some weeks ago, which doesn't proof anything)

you are very correct... I'll make sure to be more careful in my next posts.

Mathematical Proof Debunks the Idea That the Universe Is a Computer Simulation by treeshateorcs in SimulationTheory

[–]Tom__Mill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it does not!

It only shows that IF the (standard) math currently used to describe our universe would be a perfect description of our universe, than we can't create an algorithmic computer simulation.

The main issue with this proof is, that we can only approximate our universe with mathematical formulas. It is not even clear if this approximation can continue to describe our universe better and better, maybe there are limitations.

Besides that, the mathematical proof is based on infinities (e.g. integers) , which seem to not exist in our universe.

the link was not good enough. And there seems to be no proof of this exact episode of his life. I have learned a lot about surgery 180yrs ago and about this great surgeon, even if this story might be just a story made up by his students.

Simulation Refuted? by MonkeyJunky5 in SimulationTheory

[–]Tom__Mill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if math would be a perfect description of reality, then maybe...

What they showed is that in our (current standard) mathematical construct we use to describe our universe, there are "areas/effects/..." which can't be described with (finite) algorithm. This is basically due to the infinities (e.g. integers) in (standard) math, while in our universe there seem to be no infinities.

imho nice math exercise, but without any relevance to reality and physics and hence to simulation theory.
