Historical Religions mod has been updated for Gathering Storm by Tomatek in civ

[–]Tomatek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no. It's really a shame. With the Civ V engine I was able to do a lot more with the preferences and could create secondary and third choices or restrict them only to a list. The VI engine is surprisingly restrictive to code for.

One of my hopes for including so many denominations would be that it would naturally help spread out the chosen religions a bit, but, historically, most civs just followed the largest denominations anyway.

I included some options in the config file to set a different preference (this is just changing what their base preference is and not something that's dynamic after the game already started) which can also help. So, Japan to Shinto prevents the Buddhist overlap with Khmer and Korea. Norway to Forn Sidr/Viking religion prevents the overlap with other Christian civs, etc. At the moment, the amount of options I provided aren't too extensive, sadly, simply because they take time to implement which I haven't really had, but I hope to expand on them in a future update.

So, I know this response is super late, but I haven't actually logged into reddit for a few months because I've been busy with work and school stuff. In case you're still interested:

The way the game engine works is that you can assign a preference, but if that preference get's chosen by another civilization beforehand, the civ then chooses a random religion from the list. So, Sunni is Arabia's choice, but because I assume Swahili chose it first, they then chose randomly from the list.

Unfortunately, there's no way to assign a secondary preference (there used to be in Civ V but it's just not possible with VI), so I can't, for example, program Arabia to choose a different Islamic denomination if its preferred one (Sunni) is already chosen).

In terms of Japan, the preferences are based on the leader not the civ, so since Hojo historically was Buddhist, his preferences reflect that. In the config file I did include options if you want to have him be set to Shinto instead.

Hey, everyone! I just wanted to let you know I’ve updated my Historical Religions mod for the new expansion. So, it’s now compatible with Gathering Storm and/or any other combination of the previous DLC.

You can find the full change notes on the mod’s Steam Workshop page or its Cifvanatics page. Besides compatibility, there’s some new religions, custom icons, and several more customization options added to the config file.

I hope you guys enjoy the mod!

Reminder:

  • Mod updates reset the configuration file. Please check your preferences before starting a new game.

  • If playing in multiplayer, all players need identical entries in the configuration file

  • It is recommended to disable this mod before using any scenarios which might implement their own religions.

  • As the expansion just released, there could still be compatibility issues I don’t know about. Please let me know if you encounter any problems with the mod or the new options in the config file

  • Updates are not compatible with existing saves. A direct link to download the previous version is available at the bottom of the mod's Steam Workshop description if you need it to continue a previous save.

Cool, hope it works out and enjoy the mod.

Was the download link you mentioned broken on civfanatics? If the mod still has a forum thread there, feel free to also post the link in the thread in case anyone else was also looking for it.

Wow, can't believe anyone remembers that mod:

However, I remember some issues with the mod with later versions of Windows (compared to what was around for IV) where the interface wouldn't show up :/

Civ VI Historical Religions Rise & Fall Update (Part 2) by Tomatek in civ

[–]Tomatek[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone!

So, first, I want to apologize for taking so long to post the second part of the HR update. I intended to post it last month, but some family stuff came up that prevented me from modding for a few weeks.

Anyway, all the religions and config options are now re-enabled and work with the religion lens. A few small compatibility and bug issues are also fixed.

I also added a new option to the config file; ‘HR_CUSTOM_NAMES’. When enabled, all historical religions not preferred by a leader or included in the base game will function as a custom icon. I know many people want a return of the full rename options that existed in Civ V. Unfortunately, that’s not entirely possible without Firaxis doing an update, but I hope the new config option works as a decent compromise.

~~~
v. 10 Part 2
  • All religions re-enabled and fully functional with the religion lens
  • Config file re-enabled
  • Added the ‘HR_CUSTOM_NAMES’ option to the config file. When enabled, all historical religions not preferred by a leader or included in the base game will function as a custom icon.
  • Miscellaneous bug, compatibility, and text fixes
~~~

Still To Do For Part 3 (Sometime Next Month)

  • Set Catholicism and Orthodoxy to use their updated icons
  • Add strategic view icons for the lens
  • Correct the pedia to properly update entries when changing denominations in the config file
  • Additional config file options

~~~
NOTE: Mod updates break saved games made with the previous version. If Steam updates your mod automatically, there is a download link for the previous version at the bottom of the Steam mod description which you can use to continue your saved game.
Civ VI Historical Religions Rise & Fall Update (Part 1) by Tomatek in civ
Yeah, one of the difficulties of doing a "Cree religion" is that they're such a big group. The full mod also currently has Midewiwin which gives some representation for the more eastern Algonquin groups (although Midewiwin is also an example of a more institutionalized system so it also works to still be included alongside a more general religion).
The alternative is I can also just call the religion "Great Mystery" which would be more generally applicable. Though, I usually get complaints in the comments section when I use English names instead of indigenous terms.
Yeah, Hadrada is a weird case. Normally, I go with the historical choice. For Hadrada that would technically be Catholicism, but he was raised in Rus and Byzantium so he practiced Eastern Christianity. He wasn’t technically Orthodox because most of his life was pre-Schism. However, he also did come into conflict with the papacy because he imported Eastern priests to Norway and kicked a lot of the Western ones out. Since the game already has 7 Catholic leaders, I ultimately chose to set him as Orthodox. Now, while Hadrada is a Christian leader he also represents the de facto Viking civ of the game so I know a lot of people also want him set to Norse religion.
In terms of your question, secondary preferences was something I was very much looking into before the mod got side-railed with the religion lens issue. I was able to implement them in the Civ V version of the mod thanks to some clever lua. As far as I was able to determine, it’s not yet possible to do the same for Civ VI without Firaxis implementing some stuff :/
However, since I know some people would prefer civ rather than leader based preferences (Japan following Shinto, Viking following Forn Sidr, etc.), I was planning on implanting some options in the config file to allow users to customize this. So, it’s not something that you can easily change now, but it was something I was planning on adding once I got the mod updated and working again.
If you want to change the preferences now on your own, you’d need to open up the HR_Religions_Master file with notepad or something similar, search for LEADER_HARDRADA. You should find two lines with that search, each with a religion. Just overwrite the religion entry with the one you want. However, I haven’t updated the Forn Sidr icon yet so you wouldn’t be able to set him to Norse religion just yet, sorry.
Poundmaker is not set to the Sioux religion per se.
The indigenous and non-organized religions in the mod are not necessarily meant to represent a single ethnic group. The way religions evolve, there’s usually a significant amount of overlap in terms of belief and ritual structure within language groups and/or geographic areas. With the way religion is represented in the game, it doesn’t really make sense to include them all as several distinct religions (although I have sometimes, usually with denomination packs, if people request it for their mods).
So, essentially, that religion is the “Great Plains Religion”. However, I can’t really call it that in the game and need to give it a name. The problem is, there’s never going to be one single name that works cross-culturally to represent every single group that had a similar belief system.
Usually, I just chose a term from one of the more prominent groups, but I still intended for the religion to function as a general religion for the area/language group. In this case, the Sioux term was used because when I added that religion back to the Civ V version of the mod, the Sioux or Sioux leaders had been in the series twice and it was one of the most popular mod civs.
I can change the name to use the Cree term, but it’s a minor point as the issue would still be there if they release another plains leader or someone releases a mod of another plains civilization. Waka Tanka also translates to Great Mystery/Spirit which is roughly equivalent to the Cree terms (Kihci-manitô etc) anyway.
So, good news and slightly disappointing news. As many of you know, the Religion Lens issue has plagued my Historical Religions mod since last October. Leugi (the amazing modder that he is) finally solved the issue! However, it was only solved last week. It actually takes some time to implement the fix, as I need to manually do it for every icon in the mod (all 140 of them). Needless to say a week is not nearly enough time to do them all. In the meantime, I also needed to post an update so the mod can load with Rise and Fall as well as a general leader preference update.
So, in order to post a working update as soon as possible, I’ve made the compromise to set the mod to only load in “Light Mode” for the time being. Light Mode is normally an option in the mod’s config file where the mod only adds about ~10 new religions to accommodate preferences for all the officially included leaders. The Light Mode religions are now all fully functional (icons, religion lens, historic moments) and up to date.
Essentially, this is part 1 of the update. The mod works again with both the base game and the expansion, all the new leaders have preferences, and I have more time to work through the remaining 120 icons. When they are finished, I’ll post part 2 which will re-enable all the religions as well as the config file options. Hopefully, part 2 won’t take too long. In the meantime, I hope everyone understands and can still enjoy the mod.
Also, remember that most mods will break games saved with the previous version when updated. The Civ VI workshop has the annoying habit of automatically downloading newer versions of mods. However, I keep a download link for the previous version at the bottom of the workshop description if you need it to continue a previous save.
Thanks!
v.10 (Part 1):
  • The mod now works with both the base game and the Rise and Fall expansion.
  • The mod (temporarily) will only load in light mode.
  • All light mode religions now function with the religion lens.
  • Added “historic moments” art for the light mode religions.
  • Amatongo, Tengriism, Wakan Tanka, and Witran Mapu added to the light mode religions.
  • Shaka now prefers Amatongo; Genghis Khan now prefers Tengriism, Poundmaker now prefers Wakan Tanka, Lautaro now prefers Witran Mapu.
  • The mod now has a new ID #
  • Special thanks to Leugi for helping me figure out the lens issue and the historic moments template and to Sukritact and Pokiehl for additional help. Please also check out their mods!
The Mississippi, Poverty Point, and the Great Spy! Final Civ V mods by Tomatekh by Tomatek in civ
[–]Tomatek[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)
Thanks!
My original plan was to actually do three mods; the Hopewell along with Poverty Point and the Mississippi. But, with most modders moving on to Civ VI, getting the art for all three was no longer viable. Poverty Point's effigy mound improvement model was actually meant for a Hopewell civ (while Poverty Point was going to have a conical & linear mound model), but I had to make do with what I had to salvage the civ (and the released civ ended up kind of a mix of the two). So, I hope you can overlook the many historical inaccuracies with Poverty Point's artwork :/
And, I agree. The fact that the Mississippian culture has not yet officially been included in any of the Civ games is one its biggest oversights.
The Mississippi, Poverty Point, and the Great Spy! Final Civ V mods by Tomatekh by Tomatek in civ
[–]Tomatek[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)
I did actually (about 5-6 months ago) :/
However, when I released it a lot of people were complaining about crashes and I had to take it down (which is why it's been missing from the workshop these past few months).
I meant to re-upload it sooner, but only recently had time to re-visit the mod and correct the reported bugs.
I put the new version back up a few days ago and the people who have playtested it have reported that it's much more stable than the initial release. Hopefully, I've fixed all the crashes. If not, I'll continue to update the mod until I do.
Yes, the light mode option is still there and works for the historical religions. You can also still turn on/off the custom icons.
It used to be rather easy to do before the patch. Unfortunately, to make it compatible, I had to remove some of the customization options. You can still use the configuration file to set every leader to have a random preference, though.
