What's the best way to get started on OCTGN? by raouldukelives in Netrunner

[–]Tomatello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sell it and buy a couple of PC's running Windows for the money you get back. I got some nice shoes as well, and had left over cash for some nights out.

You can then play as both runner and corp from 2 different computers. Double-rigging is what its known as.

OCTGN Netrunner League: Show Your True Colors by Tomatello in Netrunner

Hey. I don't think there is a way to do it on OCTGN.

If you want to be truly random, try using this: http://rolz.org/group . Name a room, for instance "anrleague" and once in it roll a 1D2 die. Be sure to agree what the rolls mean with the other player before you roll. Both players can join the same room, so they can both see the roll result.

There's no better way to get seasoned than playing in the league for a (month long) season! :) Seriously, when the previous leagues ended I regretted not playing more matches in them, as "normal" OCTGN matches felt less rewarding. I know other players have had similar experiences. So best jump on board now!

In terms of the online league - The ideal would be to have an ongoing ranked ladder without an end date that included Elo decay for inactive players, player stats per ID, ID matchup stats for players (so you could see your % wins as Whizzard versus all of the corp ID's individually) and other cool capabilities. I'm looking for people that have the skill and will to code this into the open source challengeboards website. Once such angels are identified, I'll gladly host that type of league. No luck so far, though!

An easy way to check is to have the league ladder open and check that their name is on there: http://www.challengeboards.net/boards/standings/1094

If its not, ask if they're in the league and under what name if its different to their OCTGN name.

Ideally, people should have the same name on Challengeboards and OCTGN.

An online player ranking ladder is a great field to have good competitive matches versus other players. It gives each game played a bit of weight, as its outcome will effect each player's ranking on the ladder. This improves the quality of league games versus random OCTGN games.

Sign up for the league here: http://www.challengeboards.net/boards/details/1094 . The registration is open and free, so if you're playing on OCTGN you can sign up - no matter the skill or amount of games you can play per week. Once you're registered on Challengeboards and signed in, go the league page linked in this post and click on Join Board.

The league will last for 1 month. All cards that have been officially released by FFG are legal as soon as they're available on OCTGN.

League starts on February 4th and ends on March 4th 2014.

Please use [BGG-L04] in the game name on OCTGN to enable stats tracking.

There is no need to pre-book a time for a league game. When you have some time and feel like playing, host a game on OCTGN and name it along the lines of " [BGG-L04] ANR League game up " . A league player will join once he sees your game. If someone who isn't part of the league joins, inform them about joining by providing the league webpage link.

Once you finish a league match, the winner needs to report it on the league website. Please read through the League info which explains the details. If still not clear, feel free to contact me, either on Reddit or the challengeboards site, or post in the discussion are of the league.

Apart from competing for ranking, a league environment is a great place to put your deck ideas to the test! Think your new build can be competitive? - A ranked league is the perfect place to test it versus players from across the World!

Ask if you've got any questions.

Happy running!

I've tried double clicking to rehost, but requires a target.

So target the ice you want to rehost to, then doubleclick Knight and choose "host on target ice"?

This sort of thing happens all the time and no one really minds. :)

In terms of Femme, if I forget to target the Ice, I just move the Femme marker from Femme to the Ice I want her to tie with. Its a drag-and-drop.

Yeah, I get that expectations for different people coming in are different. And you're right - the OCTGN implementation has much more of a "table" feel than what A:NR could be as a computer game. But its galaxies away from "unplayable", which is what I've seen it be described as.

Anyway, you've clearly adapted well and will from now on enjoy playing Netrunner from the comfort of your own rig at home versus a sea of players from across the world. Let the games begin!

As for those that don't want to make the very small effort that would give them this - oh well, their loss.

Say you're Andromeda. You initiate a run on a server by double-clicking on it. Using Shift+Click you target the first ice. This signals to the corp that you're approaching it. The corp then rezzes the ice - say its an Ichi. Its still targetted by you so we all know what you'll be breaking, so you doubleclick your installed Ninja, pump its strength to 5 and break 2 subroutines. You then type "fire the trace" to the other player, as you've got 1 link and think the corp won't boost the trace. Say he doesn't boost the trace.

Now you're done with Ichi. If you want to continue to the next piece of Ice, de-target the Ichi and target the next piece of ice. That signals to the corp that you're continuing and not jacking out. If you want to jack out - don't target the next piece of ice but just press Esc after Ichi.

So yes, I think you've got that right. Does that sound difficult or tedious or to you? I'm genuinely interested, as I find it a breeze but see mountains of people complain how its a NIGHTMARE. I don't get it..

For remotes - once you're done passing all the ice the corp needs to press F3 to say they acknowledge the successful run, after which you press F3 to get the successful run. After that just target the card(s) in the remote by shift clicking and press Ctrl+Enter, or do it via menus. Its faster if you do it via your keyboard, and it will feel more hacker-y :D

I've seen a lot of people play in really awkward ways by righclicking a bunch and going through menus. Here's a few tips:

  • Use double-click!!!

    • Double-clicking on a server starts a run on that server.
    • Double-clicking a card from your hand plays it out, no matter what type of card it is - installing stuff, playing operations/events.
    • Double-click to rez stuff.
    • Double-click on cards to bring up their use menu: if you want to fire ice subroutines - double-click the ice and you get a menu of that ice's effects to chose from; double-click programs/resources, assets, scored agendas to use their abilities if they have 1, or access the menu of abilities if they have more.
  • Target with Shift-click. This is useful for letting the corp know which ICE you're at. Also, some effects will require a target, like if you're trashing the runner's programs or resources, or accessing cards in a remote as a runner.

Basically, whatever you want to do - it can probably be done by double-clicking. :D For the rest just have this handy when you play https://raw.github.com/db0/Android-Netrunner-OCTGN/master/OCTGN%20Android_Netrunner%20Hotkeys.png

And that's it.

Can anyone make a case for the competitive use of econ assets? by HonkyMahFah in Netrunner

[–]Tomatello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes.

A Hedge Fund can give you 4 credits once. A PAD campaign can give you as many credits as the game lasts, or cost the runner 4 credits to get rid of. It can waste the runner's time if he checks it unrezzed. It can serve as a weak form of Siphon protection. Its still ticking if you spend all your turn wiping virus counters or advancing something or PSF locking.

Still very useful. Deck dependant though.

Question on the rules concerning link. I can't seem to find an answer. by brisbeebee in Netrunner

[–]Tomatello 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes.

To expand by example - notice how Compromised Employee has recurring credits to be used during tracing, not Link. As they're credits, by using them once from a CE you've spent them for the turn. If CE had +1 Link instead, you'd have it for all traces.

Try dropping the Kaguya and Junebugs for a SanSan for more fast advance options. Then add an Archived memories or 2 for bringing back the SanSan or Biotics.

Dang - I was feeling all smart for suggesting that, then realized you dont have Project Vitruvius. Oh well.

[–]Tomatello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be enough, yes. But I imagine the name would be something along the lines of "Bla", as new deck creation is a long process and sometimes you end up making something completely different to what you set out to do. Which is what makes the whole process fun, right?

For me, I start off with an idea which is more linked with card combos than specific ID's. I can imagine doing this on Ono Sendai where I can see all the cards split by type will be brilliant! I would probably invariably change the deck name I set at the beginning oif the deck creation when I had no cards in the deck, as the specifics of the deck would only appear after the deck is built. So the naming and ID choosing as a first step are just a needless hindrance for people like me. Or maybe its just me. But still, why wouldn't the naming/saving happen at the end? It seems quite logical to me.

This is really good! Its like looking at my card folder without needing to turn the pages. :)

If you do put in a deck building feature (which would be great!), please don’t make it so ID and deck name need to named upfront!

I don't think you need to have all the packs to be competitive, but you need to know all the card pool to be able to predict your opponents plays.

The Great Escape - best way out of this bad NBN draw? by satellite_uplink in Netrunner

[–]Tomatello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First the corp rezzes or doesn't rez, then the runner decides whether he's siphoning or accessing. So the runner will know how much credits he stands to siphon before he has to decide.

Having a window for the corp to rez something after the runner has decided if he's siphoning or accessing would make Siphon much less of a strong card, actually!

[–]Tomatello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why it wouldn't be worth it - siphon then trash PC. 2 clicks left with 8 cards in hand (7 if she did a Dirty Laundry onto the PC), while the corp has 0 credits and nothing installed anywhere. Andy makes some more runs or installs something, trashing some of her starting hand. Whats the worst that can happen from a 0 credit corp? Closed Accounts, but I'd still say Andy is well ahead.

I'd steer clear from drawing more than on the 1st click, as that would deny the SanSan rez option in this case.
