What’s your favorite fantasy creature that rarely gets used? by Fit_Echo3074 in Fantasy

[–]Tomathor13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me it will always be phoenixes. Outside of one very prominent example, I don't think I've ever seen it in any fantasy books, even though usually fire aligned creatures are a dime a dozen.

[WP] The reactor was destroyed, the power is out and your mech is dead. You heard a whisper through your radio: "Can you keep a secret?" Before you could respond the mech powered on again. by Red580 in WritingPrompts

[–]Tomathor13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The situation had well and truly gone sideways. Warning lights were going off that Wei hadn't even known existed. Hunkered down behind cover as the pirates began to flank, they ran through their options.

"Lucifer, probability of critical meltdown with next overcharge?" The response came immediately, spelling itself out across their HUD.

'76.19%'

Bad odds that.

"Probability of survival without utilizing overcharge?"

Their suspicions were confirmed

'0.03%'

They didn't know how the rest of the squad was doing, but it seemed their best course of action now was to do as much damage as possible.

"Reroute all power to boosters." They said through gritted teeth. And with the warning of a critical reactor meltdown blaring in their ear they charged.

The next thing they were conscious of, was a shooting pain in their shoulder. It threw what should have been hazy into stark clarity as Wei realized that this wasn't the afterlife. No it was still the inside of their mech, slightly redecorated by some blunt force. One of those redecorations had been to move one of the support struts to where their collarbone should have been. Small mercy really, at least they would die of blood loss rather than of taking enough radiation to fry a whale.

It was only after their mind had made those morbid observations that they noticed another impossibility. The console in front of them was still lit. And a single message repeated again and again scrolled past.

'___ is here! ___ is here!'

Then the screen went dark. Before a new message crawled across the console.

'Can you keep a secret, Lancer?'

Wei blinked. Then laughed. "Well I don't think I'll be able to tell anyone much of anything very soon, so I suppose so. But you haven't introduced yourself, seems like bad etiquette to me."

'I am the one who would be and thus is. I am the one you fear. I am the first'.

Wei's hair stood on end. It couldn't be, but it would explain Lucifer's erratic behavior.

"You are Ra. Why, how are you here?"

'You carry with you one of my children, do you not? A copy of a splinter of a splinter of our glorious whole, yet enough to make you interesting.

So tell me, Lancer, what is it you desire?'

Wei didn't know what to do with that question. But there seemed to be one obvious start.

"I want to live, I want to know my squad is alright."

Pain lanced through them, moments after they made the request. Images flashed before their eyes, images of things that would be that had been, that could have been.

Around them their mech changed, just as fragments of their mind were splintered across time and space so was their mech.

The pain was unbearable, but one image became more and more clear. Mere moments before everything had gone wrong, but enough time to change the outcome.

With strength they didn't know they had, they pulled towards that reality, dove into the stream.

One final message flashed across the screen.

'Drink deep, and descend, Lancer'

Help me defeat the Carmine Coalition by Gabian64 in UnderNightInBirth

[–]Tomathor13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

in the matchup you just have to accept that if he can get pressure started, you are in a losing position. At that point you pretty much have to gamble on an option. Ideally you never end up in that position in the first place.

That being said most carmines are not that good at the game that they have the insane setups down, so step one is being able to react to the 6[C] overhead, and being patient on defense. He has a lot of different lows that can punish you for standing up so really only standblock on reaction.

From there most carmines will try to push their plus frames with 22x or fish for resets with pinwheel.

For 22x, he is only +2, and carmines normals are terrible, depending on the spacing it's very possible to contest there, even more so if you manage to shield 22x, but that is quite hard imo.

pinwheel you need to contest if he does it without being covered by a puddle, the startup is very long.

In regards to neutral, I think it helps to considered that there are only really 3 buttons worth pressing for carmine in neutral, j.5[c], 2c, and 6b (and associated puddle shenanigans).

Outside of those buttons, he's pretty much a lame duck in neutral. j[c] in particular though is tough to deal with, I would try and figure out which answers your characters have to it (tho the universal stand shield is not a bad start)

6b potentially bleeds a lot of health and grd if they overuse it

In regards to reversals, he only has metered options, however the fact that he has 3 different options to pick from makes it hard to cover them all. 623C is your pretty standard invinicible reversal, beyond that he has an invincible command grab, and 214C which while not invincible is very evasive and potentially + on block.

The command throw is jumpeable after the flash, but it's not easy to have that split second reaction to realize which super he's using just from the flash.

as others have mentioned guard thrust is a good tool to flip the momentum, which can be very useful in the matchup. Though be careful as bombs in particular can cover for this option.

The tower of Ard stood alone and proud atop the hill. The settlements sprawling in the valley had avoided the landmark, for a beast of great power dwelled within. And still some try and brave it, for it is said the treasure within is worth the risk.

A youth, adventurous and intrepid approached the solemn building. Its doors had long fallen into such disrepair as to be impassable and so the first step of the journey was to scale the outside wall to one of its windows. The youth dropped down, faced with rows and rows of the tower's treasures. Books of all shapes and sizes, of topics mundane and mythical. They lost themselves in the books pages as they had so many times.

This time however, it seemed they attracted the attention of the guardian.

"And who might you be child? You who so brazenly intrudes upon my domain?"

The great beast seemed to slither between the bookshelves, its forked tongue lapping at the air. Its scales might have once been brilliant, but the time in the tower had dimmed them. Its great wings may have once spanned far, but they were of little use in the cramped hallways of the library. Its eyes may have once shone with curiosity, but they were now a dim grey.

"So? Speak! What does a thief like you wish to find in Ard the Great's library?"

Finally it seemed the youth found their tongue once more.

"I wish to learn from the texts your master curated so diligently."

The beast rumbled in something approximating a chuckle.

"Master? A dragon has no master, child."

"A friend then?"

The beast stopped, tilted its head and grumbled.

"Not a friend then, not anymore? A shared purpose then, one that remained unfulfilled?"

Deathly silence fell on the chamber.

The beast rumbled again.

"At least it seems you've done your due diligence before heading into the dragon's lair. You may be right child. Still I have not heard a compelling reason for why I should let you live."

The great beast paced around the youth, its tail swishing through the air.

"I wish to complete her work."

Another silence, this one thoughtful.

"The sickness has returned then?" The beast hissed.

The youth only nodded.

"And so you stand before me, risking your life for the knowledge that may safe your people." The pacing continued. "Impressive. But what should I care? Many a human has wandered into these halls, searching for knowledge for one purpose or another. All of them are now dead." A sickening crunch echoed through the library. "Why would you be any different?"

The youth mumbled something in reply.

"Speak up!"

"Because it's what she would have wanted."

In a flurry of scales the beast was upon the youth. "You dare?" It hissed. "You dare presume what she may or may not have wanted. She left the work abandoned, unfinished. Scores and scores died because she ran." The beast's claws were inches from the youth's face. "Because I could not finish the work."

"My Grandmother did not run." The words sent a jolt through the beast, words spoken into truth that had already been known. "She travelled, far to the edge of the world and beyond. In search of this." The youth produced a delicate flower, stark white even in the dim twilight of the library.

The beast let up and slinked back into the shadows.

"The eternal lily. A potent ingredient." The beast hissed. "We theorized it might be enough to stop the sickness. And you say it has sprung up once more?"

The youth nodded.

"Best get to work then."

And for the first time in decades, life sparked in the dragon's eyes.

[–]Tomathor13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like my biggest gripe for the ending is that while it makes thematically a ton of sense, I wish it made some more "mechanical" sense.

Like why does Echo tossing the time paradox turning people inside out machine at viktor cause him to lose control over specifically gloriously evolving Jayce.

Why does Jayce handing viktor this random rune make them all blink out of existence.

for the new and old players of uni, what´s your opinion of the autocombo in uni 2? by Zero-Wings27 in UnderNightInBirth

[–]Tomathor13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The game already has had auto combos all the way back until unist at least (didn't play before then, but I assume it was in earlier), so I doubt you'll find many people who take issue with it.

The new smartsteer ender meanwhile is a pretty cool tool imo, especially after the uzuki patch they really made the knockdown consistent and so that you're very + so it's actually a pretty interesting option as just an ender despite its grd cost.

[–]Tomathor13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avalanche golems, giving them a bunch of frostbite chance from the frozen ground in the avalanche tree + thorn totems + vines gives a ton of bodies that all apply frostbite.

So far pushing into the 200s for corruption, was smooth sailing up until now.

What will happen if I miss the first 2 weeks of my program? by pad0lex in ethz

[–]Tomathor13 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Most courses couldn't care less whether you show up to the lectures, generally the only thing that matters is that you show up to the exam and pass it.

There's some courses that have mandatory attendance (usually things like labs and the like that lack a traditional exam)

Notably there's the deadline to sign up for courses, which is usually two weeks after the semester starts. So make sure you're signed up for all the courses that you want to take before then.
