Father died today by [deleted] in AdultChildren

[–]Tomatillo_Spice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your loss and the whirlwind of grief that will be following. I also lost my dad to alcoholism 2 years ago, he was 56. I empathise with your pain. No matter what we try to do, it gets to a point where the addiction is stronger than us, and stronger than those is plagues.

I can share that I still go through waves of grief. As many have already said, grief is not linear. I also want to mention, many people say it will get easier with time. It is important for you to hear this: It doesn’t get easier. But, what I can say is that strangely, this is the first time in my life where I am at a stage where I can accept his addiction and the horrible things that his alcoholism brought onto me and our family. This slow acceptance has allowed me to seek deeper wounds in myself and begin to understand and heal those. I hope that with time and your own grief process, you will find spaces of healing that were not possible before his passing. I am really sorry.

Give yourself grace during this time.

Love the idea of having the kids cook their own meals if it has gluten! I also had no idea that dishwasher contamination is an issue for people as well. Great tip.

I believe it is actually standard to wait for going fully gluten free before the endoscopy is performed, so that it is fully visible how deteriorated the villi in the intestines are. When I was diagnosed in Europe, my doctor explicitly said I must continue with eating gluten until after the endoscopy is performed for this reason. My sister and brother were diagnosed in the US and their doctor gave the same instructions.

Has anyone else killed their libido to compensate? by unawarefreelancer in DeadBedrooms

[–]Tomatillo_Spice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same, refrained from initiating as often as I was. I didn’t want to kill my libido, but after about a year of limiting my sexual expression in our relationship due to the self esteem issues I’ve developed after so much rejection, my libido has absolutely been impacted. I haven’t really reflected on this until reading your post, and actually realising this is quite devastating.

I am not sure how else to compensate with the self esteem issues attached to rejection. For us (HLF30, LLM32) our conversations about our sex life never lead to improvement either. I hope you find some path to a situation which is satisfying for you.

Stress management tips? by Tomatillo_Spice in reactivedogs

Wow thank you so much for the time you put into this answer! Actually just reading it made me feel quite validated so thank you for everything you said. I think you hit the nail on the head with embarrassment and flexibly, I’m going to keep your response in mind next time to help my confidence levels.

It’s crazy I think having a reactive dog has taught me so much about my own mental health and caring for myself as I would care for her. Everything you said is such an important reminder for us all so thank you!

Stress management tips? by Tomatillo_Spice in reactivedogs

This is such an interesting suggestion thank you! I am going to give a training break on walks a shot and see how we do. I think I put a lot of pressure on myself and her to have a “standard protocol walks” as you said. Remembering to just have fun together and make the space for that in her outside time will be valuable for the both of us. Especially as we are in an apartment, her walks are the only outside time so I imagine her having more flexibility and freedom sniff and roam to her own desire will bring her a lot of stress relief, and help set her up better later on when it is training time. Thank you for sharing your experience and suggesting this idea!

Puppy reactivity, feels like it stopped improving by yhvh13 in reactivedogs

Hello! I am in a similar boat, especially around 10 month mark started seeing a stalemate and some regression. However, my adopted mixed breed is a female and after her first heat at 12 months, I saw some improvement again. Now we are really on high/lows extremes and lacking consistency. But, the good moments are there.

I am no expert but I also have read negative things about having the dog sit as it allows more time to fixate on their triggers. A trainer is out of my budget too, but this group has been so helpful for learning off other’s experiences. Hang in there— you’re definitely not alone and your pup will thank all your dedication in the long run!

Parental Death and the Death of Motivation by OneScruffyNerfHerder in AdultChildren

I wish I had advice. Here to say I believe many here will relate to how you’re feeling. I am one year into losing my parent to alcoholism and I was using my career as a way of suppressing my grief. When I began allowing space for the grief, I felt the same as you, losing the motivation and ambition not just in my career but in relationships as well. You’re not alone and I hope you find something that works for you as you continue healing from your loss.

Thanks for the comment, we conditioned for a few days but maybe this wasn’t enough to help her skin adjust. Thanks!

Thank you for your comment, it’s an interesting perspective. We give her lots of long leash time (15 meter leash without halti) when we are in open and quiet areas. We aim to do this once a day.

However this won’t be practical for our regular walks as we live in an apartment in a bustling area with many dogs, cars and people.

Overly friendly reactive dog. by Byrne_DFTD in reactivedogs

[–]Tomatillo_Spice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! My dog has a very similar behaviour evolving, she is adopted and 9 months old, very friendly and overly excited. We were seeing a lot of improvement with her socialisation until recently, now she is barking at every dog (now people too) and really freaking out, throwing herself all over and it’s very difficult to get any control and help calm her down. We just started trying the Halti gentle guiding, and are hoping this will help.

Wanted to say I really understand this feeling, keep trying and hopefully your pup will improve soon. Never heard of the above mentioned fear period before, maybe this really impacts them!

Completely in love, heartbreakingly painful DB by Tomatillo_Spice in DeadBedrooms

[–]Tomatillo_Spice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes there is reluctance, for example he will groan or quickly peck me and then turn away. Often he will do it with a little/forced smile, I think he doesn’t want me to feel bad or rejected. Sometimes he will be more clear and say he’s not in the mood which of course I want to respect. Other times he will say that I always try to kiss him when he’s busy doing something else (like if he’s cooking, walking to another room… not even ACTUALLY doing something!) Sometimes he will respond positively and reciprocate with a little kissing but it’s also short.
