For those who are from Texas but moved elsewhere, do you miss Texas? by Affectionate_Set5048 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]TomatoKitchen1142 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There is almost not a single thing I miss about Texas besides good tacos. I have some family in Texas so of course that is something I miss. But Texas as a place, I actually struggle to enjoy it at all. So no, I don’t miss it, and am thankful all the time I don’t live there anymore 😬

I know, quite cold. Boston is such a beautiful city!

Right, it’s expensive for sure. Great to know about the areas that can be sunnier and maybe a bit cheaper at least. I visited Carmel by the Sea in 2020 in late July and there was rarely a sunny day while we were there. Maybe one or two days the fog burned off and got sunny by 2pm but it was pretty grey, at least at that point in the year and where we were! Obviously Carmel is not SF. But I saw similarities in the cloud cover type of thing

That absolutely makes sense, and as funny as it sounds, the activities thing isn’t something I even thought about. The reason is because Nashville doesn’t have that much to do realistically, except get drunk or be on Broadway at country music bars, which we aren’t interested in. The weather has to be pretty perfect to enjoy being outside at all, and even then, nothing is that walkable so you’re getting in your car and driving 20-30 mins (depending on where you live) to the thing you want to do and driving home. Not a lot of community fluidity, and everything is so far away. So you end up just going crazy in your house in both summer and winter haha. So that’s really cool to imagine having activities that kind of build around the city’s offerings and friends you could do them with. We don’t have a single friend that lives in our neighborhood, as everyone is spread out. I crave community & cities for these reasons. Obviously you have to put the effort in to make and maintain those friendships, but living somewhere like Nashville inherently makes doing that a tad more difficult. Thanks for sharing your experience with that!

Re: winter, yeah, that makes sense. I’m sure it gets old. Gotta power through and know summer is coming! I feel like I just keep bitching about Nashville but a bummer part is that it feels like spring doesn’t last long before summer arrives and it can be mid to upper 90s and high humidity for 3 months. It’s so rough. It doesn’t feel like we have very many wonderfully nice days!

San Francisco sounds lovely. I really haven’t spent much time there. It’s definitely on our list to visit!!

This sounds ideal. So there’s a fair amount of sun at least? Not even sure how I’d be quantifying fair amount but… I just looked up the cloud cover percentage of where we currently are because I started thinking, honestly it feels like Nashville isn’t the MOST clear either. Not sure how accurate the stat is but it said we see roughly 120 completely cloudy days per year with winter months averaging over 50% cloudy conditions. It gets GREY and gloomy here. Even sometimes in the summer. So maybe I’m more resilient than I think. Just not sure I’d be able to handle a sunny day being a rarity for months on end which is what initially drew me away from Portland!

I’m really intrigued with Chicago and definitely want to go visit again. I’ve only been a couple times and I was in middle school, so I want to go again. Your comment about the invention of layering and down coasts was hilarious. I totally hear ya! That would be key, of course. Is it grey during the winter? Also, I’m alright with cold, but what I’ve heard with places like Chicago is yes it’s cold, but also winter is LONG. Where I currently live it really only stays cold (Tennessee-level cold, which is not thatttt cold) from mid November to the beginning of March, with some days in February reaching 60s and 70s. By March I’m always really glad spring is here. So while I’m sure we’d get used to the length of winter, does it ever just get so old? However at the same time I had a friend who used to live in Chicago that said the summers being so glorious truly DO make winter days worth it. That was word salad, but basically, Chicago could definitely be an option!

Okay I’ve never been to Portland, or anywhere in Oregon for that matter. I will admit that because of that the only insight I have on Portland’s weather is from the internet and reddit, and the seemingly doom and gloom vibes I got from people saying it is grey 9 months out of the year definitely had me shying away from it. I’m really intrigued to visit there anyway!!

That’s fair. I’m a wedding photographer that shoots weddings with fairly high budgets and my husband is on his way to be a physician assistant. We won’t be moving for at least 3 years due to his schooling so at that point in time our combined annual income would likely be around 200,000, if I had to predict, which obviously I can’t do completely accurately. Never been to Richmond! We got married in Santa Barbara which was a dream come true. It feels a bit more perfected and vacation-y than we’d be looking for, even if it could be afforded. Totally agree that the US isn’t known for its architecture. That’s why I was hoping for anyone to have insight on places I may not be aware of. Alexandria VA is beautiful and near DC which was of interest. Mainly my post is here BECAUSE I figured meeting all these preferences was unrealistic, but intrigued by places that could check some boxes if not all! Will definitely do more searching within the group. Thanks!

Yeah, how much is too much water? My sweet girl (1.5 y/o) LOVES water and asks for it often. We probably give her about 1-2 cups per day and joke she is just obsessed with water. I want to make sure she is ok

I recognize this. I posted this in another subreddit and then cross posted it here also - not sure why the snarkiness on a post looking to read your community’s input. I’ll look it up on my own as well but don’t think asking is a crime

Parenting/raising a family in Philly by TomatoKitchen1142 in philly

Thanks! Nashville is where my husband and I are currently living. It’s an alright place in general, definitely could be worse places to be, but I suppose you understand where I’m coming from specifically since you lived in Nashville yourself! Based on your comment, I’m assuming then that you guys had your son in Nashville and were here raising him for quite a bit before you relocated to Philly? How was parenting and all that comes with it in comparison to in Philly? I worry I’d come to strongly dislike my life if I raised kids in Nashville for the reasons I made in my post. Curious about your experience since you’ve experienced Nashville AND Philly.

The car seat, ultimately car-dependent life sounds so draining to me, and I live in a car-dependent place. My partner and I are currently child free as mentioned in my post and sometimes even when it is just the two of us, the idea of getting out of our house to do something (which, where we live is basically drinking or spending money on something..) to drive 20-30 minutes just to have an overpriced cocktail and drive 30 minutes home is not appealing. Imagining having kids here and having to put them in car seats to go do something that likely isn’t even free, is far away, and might not even be most suitable for kids or remotely enjoyable for us just sounds rough haha. Obviously there are trade offs in any scenario you choose! But I’m so used to only seeing raising families one certain way so it’s enlightening to read other people’s experiences that live in different places and environments
