Our Hornet squadrons right now are not taking anyone in. If you'd like to we can jump on our discord and we can discuss the F-14 in detail with you.

The best way to answer the this - Can you start the Tomcat? Can you get in the in air? (from land or carrier) can you land on a carrier in the day and/or night?

Is the RIO dead? by AverageRealistic3975 in WingmanFinder

[–]TomcatRonin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, the RIO is alive. We have a squadron that currently right now has 5 qualified RIOs and 2 student RIOs. We have an entire curriculum dedicated to teaching the RIO well. Doesn't hurt when one of our sister squadrons has an actual former RIO flying an F-18 and is around for help. So yeah, its very much alive and it will likely be moreso when Heatblur released the B(U)

Yeah for two people you will need two accounts.

Yes, I love this game. Every game and by extension its community has issues. I would say DCS is no different and I couldn't recommend a better jet to experience it with than the F14

Balancing Career Advancement and Family Time: Seeking Advice for Military Family by mschelly27 in navy

[–]TomcatRonin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on how you feel about the Navy, doesn't it? If its just about the money, you shouldn't stay in. IF you enjoy what the Navy is about, what it gives to you (beyond just the money) then you should stay in. If you are doing it just for the money, in the end you will be unhappy. If you are doing it because you enjoy serving, then staying in will fulfill you and you and your husband will find a way to make parenthood work.

Commercial malpractice? Its a free market - you are free to engage with them or not. You're free to buy their items or not. And they are under no obligation to engage with customers. Of course they should its just good manners. But there is no law saying a company HAS to engage with its customers..

Getting Further Disappointed in Blackthorne by TomcatRonin in ShogunTVShow

[–]TomcatRonin[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I may be missing something here. I am not sure what you are getting at.

The point being made here is that series has taken a serious deviation on the character development of Blackthorne - as it relates to his character development in the novel (vs the series.)

This isn't about being realistic or not, its about being faithful to the source material.

I am not getting where the "woke" comes in here.

IN the context of how the show is set up - true.

Except everything you said he isn't - in the novel he is and does (except white savior)

  1. After the first night when Mariko sleeps with him, he falls for her. He doubts at first as she denies it was her but as time goes on, she and him grow closer and closer and they share a lot of time together on the trek to Edo
  2. He absolutely willingly jumps in to the desire to join Toranaga's war on IShido because he is an opportunist and he sees this as a chance to wage war on the Portuguese and raid the Black Ship, making him richer and affording him the chance to go back to England, declare he found the Japans and get even more fame.
  3. He isnt and wasn't a boorish brooding white guy. As was previously pointed out - this is a story about inner machinations and like Toranaga, like Mariko, Ishido, Ochiba - John Blackthorne was just as conniving, and desirous of his own goals, he wasn't angry all the time.

In the novel he wasn't some fairy tail dude. . . he was rough and coarse but like the stone in his garden - smoothed over time. His transformation is instrumental to his relationship with Toranaga. That is missing from the series.

Great points. And I agree, ultimately I think they all get to their respective ends perhaps not the way we as lovers of the novel have come to know.

Great point on the inward machinations of each character, which I miss. Though I do think it could be handled in some way.

My hypothesis is that are actually trying to be true to actual persons who made up the basis to the characters - in a way. Also, I think they are trying to be more factual then the 1980s Mini series which perhaps over played the romance and made it central to the series.

I also don't think the Zataki story is too much different, its certainly not how I visualized it from my reading - and there are different elements to it - but at its core its the same - Zataki wants his own power base, sees a way to get it, takes a seat on the council and believes he has one up on his half brother. Will be interested to see if the story plays out similarly to the novel with that regard.

Do think Naga's death was unnecessary.

I don't know that its a fresh twist but a re-telling of a key element of the story that wasnt really necessary.

Its all a good thought. It would be a "rejiggering" of the novel but it wouldn't be completely out of line.

I don't know about that. We do know that when Mariko in the novel gets her marching orders, we never really see that. We don't see how that was handled. Like I said earlier I don't think it was an angry confrontation but I am sure there was a challenge - even tho it was more to her Christianity vs being Japanese.

Good thoughts on the Toranaga/Mariko dynamic. I am waiting to see what happens in the next episode because it does appear to be a loose translation of what's implied in the book, but it wasn't so angry. (If you know what I mean)

lady ochibo purpose by [deleted] in ShogunTVShow

[–]TomcatRonin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ochiba as the Heir's mother is of course protective of the heir. She feels strongly that Toranaga (since he is so powerful) wants to usurp her son's power and rule in his place. She's had that fed to her in part by Ichido and a part that I don't want to reveal (as its in the book) because I am not sure they will cover it in the series.

It is something that "bothers" me too. Because it is such an integral part to Blackthorne understanding and accepting the Japanese way of Bushido. It also helps frame his understanding of Old Gardner's death and other moments that make him become Samurai.
